MAG premise already kinda outdone by Dust 514 :  http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24886  /  http://video.golem.de/games/2283/dust-514-ego-shooter-im-universum-von-eve-online-gamescom-2009.html

basically, the people playing EVE Online are the commanders, and the people playing the shooters are the mercs who go out and fight for them.  Sounds like a cool idea.

yeah, the gun brought about a lot of good levels, so hopefully the water does the same.  Won't buy the pack myself unless there are official levels that come with it.

Metal Gear pack was $10 I think (or $5?) but it doesn't matter much.  Only those who want to build levels with it have to pay, which is actually pretty lame, but I can still play the water based levels for free.

Why not trade in the ones you have for a Slim? Unless you prefer having a backwards compatible model... why do you even have two, anyway? ???

From the PS Blog about 3.00

PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.00) Update

Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.

Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:

    * “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
    * Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
    * Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
    * PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
    * Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
    * Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.00 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

When in a game and you press the PS button, the battery indicator blocks the clock. Tons of usable space was available, but they put it over the handful of pixels that are the XMB clock  :lol

actually, aesthetically it looks a bit nicer.  nothing that really matters.

yeah, I don't understand why those who have a PS3 would care about the slim.  The only reason I bought a PS2 slim was because my old PS2 wouldn't read PS1 games/CD based games anymore.  I didn't even buy a PSone until a year ago when it was $30 with a screen.

I'm trying to decide on whether I should sell off the one I have ("as-is") and buy a slim, or just cough up the $200 that it costs to repair this one. It's a bitter pill, given the launch cost of that fucking thing. Should have come with lifetime warranty.

yeah, I don't understand why those who have a PS3 would care about the slim.

Should have come with lifetime warranty.

yeah, it's close enough in price to make it a tough choice

depends on how much you think you could get out of the one that's failing on you, i guess

I've put it up at $200, if I get that or near that, away it goes. Question is whether or not I will actually buy another PS3 at all. Uncharted 2 looks hot as hell, GOWIII will be hot, but I'm not seeing much else worth $299.

Besides, I have ballistic goggles to buy.

Heavy Rain seemed like a cool concept, at least judging from the last preview I read. Problem is that it also looks completely uninteresting. I appreciate that Sony isn't afraid to show ambition, but experimental stuff that looks boring is probably not what the company should be focusing on right now.

I'm liking what I'm reading about firmware 3.0 (the integration of the PSN store - and other features - with the xmb is long overdue), but I'm not sure if these changes warrant the big increment jump. Imo, the only thing worthy of inclusion in a 3.0 FW is BC.

while true, every X.0 update sony has done has never been worthy.

The lack of BC-related announcements is mind boggling. I mean at one point the amount of rumors surrounding it (with the patents and everything) were just as intense as the PS3 Slim's... well close but not quite. We know one thing for sure, a variety of solutions has been studied, let's just hope that those studies will come to fruition and not be ignored like so many patents before.

As long as the PS2 is on store shelves, they'll never add it. They make too much money. Next year will be when it goes in. Look how long it took for Uncharted to become Greatest Hits. They didn't drop it, because it was bundled. 2 days after it becomes GH, the bundle becomes discounted.
Title: Re: Gamescom 2009

Why should Sony cannibalize Ps2 sales by announcing BC for the Ps3? Sony still wants people to buy Ps2 consoles, especially since Ps2 is very profitable for them...

Ps2 bc for Ps3 will not happen soon.

Don't the plan to stop making PS2's in November? If that's the case I expect BC to be announced at TGS and be released like a week before December.

Thats just some stuff someone said so its validity is unknown.

Honestly i think they can squeeze one more holiday season with the PS2 so if BC actually exists i would say next year.

The PS3 stuff today glossed over what was announced for the PSP.  PSP Minis is going to be pretty neat.  Depending on the game, I'll get it on my PSP instead of ipod touch/future iphone.  Like, Pac-Man CE is coming to the PSP on this service, and I'd much rather play that with a proper D-pad.  Also, the new LocoRoco game they announced looks like it could be controlled entirely by L/R.  I just find it hilarious that there is a single game now that can make use of the PSP Go in closed mode.

The comic stuff also seemed pretty neat, but I haven't been into comics for good while.  I tried reading a spider-man issue a while back and there was an anti-Venom that was white, I dunno, it was weird.

I'm hoping Microsoft has cool stuff tomorrow.  I mean, other than Lost Planet 2 co-op demo and SHADOW COMPLEX.

Some new stuff,

New game from Namco and Game Republic...something like The Last Guardian
<a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/maijin-the-fallen-realm-announced">Maijin: The Fallen Realm announced </a>

Quote
A trailer shown at gamescom began with a warrior character wandering round the ruins of a castle. It wasn't long before he came across some spikey demon types and started battering them with a big stick.

The message "A young thief stumbles across a being of legend" scrolled across the screen. A hill in the background turned out to be a huge monster which lumbered towards the demons and started bashing them. The final shots were of the warrior and the monster wandering peacefully in the grounds of a huge castle.

Afterwards it was explained that the two characters co-operate to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles. A bit like PS3 exclusive The Last Guardian, then? The game certainly looked a bit similar. Apparently it will be very much "in the Japanese style", with plenty of detail to the lush environments.

Spring 2010,PS360

Ninja Theory is also making a game for Namco.

No, Majin: The Fallen Realm by Namco-Bandai for Ps360. Will be released during first half of 2010.

Sony games are never ugly like that abomination.

EDIT:

... Are they serious? that's it? two falling bumbers, a hood stuck open, and door fallings off is their definition of "damage"?

Maybe it'll be in an update  ;)

I just posted in the Gamescom thread but I can also confirm damage in GT5. I busted up the whole front of my Impreza when I noticed damage was happening. I even lost a door. It also seemes like I took motor damage because I was going slower after the crashes.

hmm

finally some fucking cosmetic damage in an GT game.

anyone read up on FF14? I heard that it was supposed to be more like Monster Hunter now, but the videos make it seem like the same old boring MMO shit

Some FFXIII news

Quote
FFXIII’s PS3 and 360 versions will release simultaneously next spring in Europe, producer Yoshinori Kitase told VG247 at GamesCom today, calling the info the “new announcement”.

“We don’t have the actual month down yet, but in Japan it’s scheduled for a winter release, and in Europe and North American territoriers it’s spring 2010,” said the developer.

He added: “For Europe and North America, the PS3 and 360 versions are going to be released simultaneously.”

360-3 DVDs probably
Quote
“This is not the final count as we’re still working on it, but we’re aiming for about three discs for the Xbox 360 version,” said the developer.

And from 1UP,360 version is about 70% complete

During our interview with Final Fantasy 13 producer Yoshinori Kitase at Gamescom he provided an update on the development of the different versions of the game. They are well into working on the game for other markets. This includes the planned Xbox 360 version for America which he estimates is now 70 percent done. He said that the game is up and running well on Microsoft's hardware but they have not started the debugging process yet.

The reason why FFXIII is being ported so fast is because MS has like an army of engineers helping those midgets.

Ongoing discussions with Microsoft about how Final Fantasy XIV is to work with Xbox Live are partly to blame for the lack of announced 360 version, producer Hiromichi Tanaka told VG247 at GamesCom today.

“FFXI for 360; at that point PS2 didn’t have a hard disc [and] that was really difficult for us, but Xbox 360 had that from the beginning, so that really helped us. We managed to smoothly move onto 360 from the Windows version, so that was very good to us,” said the developer.

“However, for FFXIV, because 360 has its own policy with Xbox Live that is different from [the] internet, that’s something we’re in discussions with Microsoft [about], to come to an agreement. That’s one of the reasons it’s not going to be launched at that point.”

The “point” being the simultaneous release of the PS3 and Windows versions next year.

Tanaka told us in the same conversation that the words “launch timing” were “cut out” of SCEA boss Jack Tretton’s FFXIV exclusivity announcement FFXIV at E3, and that it “doesn’t mean that we’re not going to have a 360 [version] in the future”.

Oh what a surprise...

Other news are that Crytek released some uber-lame teaser... :yuck

I like how Tretton made it a point to mention that "this was a Final Fantasy that won't be going multiplatform" during the E3 presentation. Day and date launch on Windows, and most likely a 360 release as well  :lol

No, they have to pay a yearly fee and a monthly fee. Get it right.

Anyway, I don't see why anyone who wants this would get it on a console instead of a PC.

Ahh, I thought you had to pay for online play. Seems not to be the case for MMO's..

Then I don't get SE decision to announce it only for PC/Ps3.(so far)
