From Software has been on a roll lately. Demon's Souls is amazing. And now this.
The game reminds me a bit of the old FF, Zelda and DQ games.
-
Looks like Dragon Quest 1 with Lego blocks.
-
just looking at those screenshots hurts my eyes.
-
It looks really cool, but does anyone know what kind of game it is? RPG? Adventure? Action?
-
Action RPG.
The story:
3D Dot Game Heroes is set in the Kingdom of Dotnia. This world was once made up of 2D sprite art like something out of an old school game. However, wanting to attract more people to the kingdom, the king decided to use technology to make everything 3D. This is where something goes horribly wrong, although just what that is has yet to be specified.
...
The game's background story involves six magic orbs which were stolen by a demon of darkness, who was then defeated by a brave swordsman and sealed away using the combined power of the orbs. You play as the grandchild of that brave swordsman, and you're tasked with saving the world.
lol
The game will be released this coming november in Japan
I'll import if it has english text, and if it's any good.
-
please be an arpg!
it would be cool as shit if you could create weapons and armor by assembling blocks.
-
this looks fuck amazing
-
http://www.3d-heroes.net/
even the music sounds like DQ :lol
I hope the game will be good.
-
I want this game.....bad
-
what a neat style! what platform is this for?
-
what a neat style! what platform is this for?
PS3
Wollan's
That works too :lol
-
This is such a cool concept, I'm intrigued.
-
Looks awesome, first PS3 exclusive since Wipeout HD Fury that interests me.
-
I'm with the guy who said the effects are out of place and ugly. The actual pixel/polygon art design is neat, but then the reflection effect on the water and some of the reflections/lighting just looks horrible. Curious to how it plays though. Hopefully it's not just a joke game made for satirical purposes.
-
:drool
Must... have... now...
-
that water has the potential to be the breathtaking in motion
-
Possibly the most interesting art direction choice of this generation.
-
(http://i28.tinypic.com/33bjx9g.jpg)
Very cool.
-
Demon Soul was an amazing game.. but the difficulty was just too much. I gave up on that game because of it, and I cant remember when was the last time I did this.
-
wow
-
That looks awesome. I hope they keep the blurry effect to a minimum as it just covers up the great looks.
-

I guess Atlus and Ignition are both interested in bringing this to North America.
-

That makes Cloud feel inferior.
-
that reminds me of that one flash game someone posted here a while back
shit, I can't remember the name. I think Bory's posted it. You could make your sword gigantic in it.
-
What systems?
PlayStation®3

-
Lol, I can be a box? :lol
Character customization looks fun.
-
This is actually starting to look neat. I wish I wasn't so anti-importing for $$$ purposes atm. I'm not importing like anything as I've lost that feeling that an import game is worth $80-90 when I'm getting used to paying $40-55 for big US games. Also 2G2D and stuff has me lowering my spending costs. I think the only games I will pay that import money for are SMT SJ (I'll buy every R&D1 game, sadly) & FFXIII this year.
I hope they pick this up for the US. I would totally buy it at $40-55.
-
Atlus and Ignition are interested. One of them will bring it over.

This was the first video of a game I've seen in a long, long, long time that has made my jaw drop.
Goddamn seriously this game looks insane. From Software :bow2
-
Someone better localize this fucker.
-
like, right now
I'm hoping it's like Demon's Soul that at the very least it gets an English Asian version. I want this so bad.
The two things I was skeptical on, combat and how it look sin motion, were both solved with the video. Combat? It's 2D Zelda. :rock Graphics? incredible

Demon's Soul was published by Sony, they always do English language versions of their titles for Asia. This is published by FROM, so I'm guessing no English version for Asia.

atlus and ignition were/are bidding on it
personally i hope atlus wins
-
(If it turns out to be DQ1-style gameplay/boring story with wacky bonkers graphics I will be v sad)
Is there anything to point that it is something other than a basic DQ1 rpg?
-
yeah, it definitely seems like 2D Zelda
and the only two new concerns I have are that the perspective seems like it's locked, which would suck since I'd like to free look around the world, and you might need to create a character and their walk cycle too.
I think the water looks awful even in motion, but otherwise it looks greaaaaaaaaaaaat.
yeah, the water was a bit of a let down. I was hoping it would rise bit by bit, but instead it just seems to shimmer a lot and look weird. Everything else looks great. It all looks like it's done in stop motion, and when objects move at normal speed, like dead enemy bits, it makes it seem even more cool.
They should bring it to 360 and PC too. 360 at least should be reasonable since it's not published by Sony, right?
-
Someone better localize this fucker.

Yeah my opinion of Ignition is pretty low still. All they have to their name is a bunch of shitty localizations and Muramasa, where they basically spent a few hours translating the bare minimum, left all the other Japanese voices/text in and then called it a day.
-
That blur is a little frustrating, it obscures an awful lot. I hope they tone it down. The water is a missed opportunity too.
-
was that the dude from Spelunker he was talking to near the end?

Wow, this better come out in the US.
-
I'm more excited because it looks like all 2D Zelda games in the style of Zelda 1 if it was done with legos. Only the water looks bad and out of place.
-
It has to do with how much I like Zelda games. If you aren't crazy about them and laugh when you notice this game even copied the pegasus boots animation, then some of the appeal is probably lost.
-
Haha, this is one of the more blatant rips of 2d Zelda I've seen since Shining Wisdom.
Some Nintendo fanboys are trying to start petitions to get it canceled. :lol
-
Surprised someone hasn't done something like this before. It's a cool visual effect.
-

Pretty much.

actual gameplay looks terrible
-
That looks awful. You guys are on some weeaboo shit here.
Seriously. The graphics are so inconsistent in that video. Sometimes the draw distance is one foot and other times it's all the way to the horizon. That blur is eye-rapingly bad.
-
Not only is it awesome, it's coming to North America!
http://twitter.com/SonyPlayStation/status/5206670690
No need to import - 3D Dot Game Heroes for PS3 is DEFINITELY coming to NA! Spread the word, more to come.

Looks pretty sweet, but the gameplay looks pretty crappy.
Are there random dungeons? That would be baller.
-
Nice. I'm all over the US version.
Importing is too expensive this gen!
-
Type B seems like the best. Type D wouldn't be bad if you could pan the camera.
-
I kind of like Type A as it's still pulled out enough, but you get those nice depth of field effects.
-
Cool, getting the NA version then.
I don't care for the PAL version. Importing is cheaper.
-
yeah, I'm hoping there is a way to turn off the DOF. They have the option to turn off the line/pixel effects on the models to make them more look more like natural 8-bit sprites rather than lego blocks.

Other than Link, what other 8-bit heroes can fit in this game's environment?
8-bit Mario wielding a sword? nah; Gundams are cool though.
Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest characters are an easy one.

The 8-bit Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest characters aren't as distinguishable as Link, though. Megaman and Mario are some of the best examples, but as I said earlier, I'm not sure how they'd fit in; they'd definitely look awkward wielding swords.
Who cares if they fit in? They'd still be awesome!

Wait a second, this game is priced at $40?
FROM :rock
Yep. I got a free $25 Gamestop card in the mail today for doing e-rewards surveys.
EVEN CHEAPER :rock
-
Yeah, mine shipped from Amazon. I think it was like $36? Glad I didn't import it for $70+ when it first came out.
-
I'm waiting for my $20 SMG2 credit
-
I'm gonna use that one on Crackdown 2 :rock
-
Hoping to get it today with the gamestop 25% off coupon. Game looks awesome!
-
I almost picked this up at Gamestop today (was buying LP2, and only because I had store credit from a reserve I did before), but then I realized I could get it like $8 cheaper at Amazon.
-
It's $35 at Fry's this week. I'm not sure about picking it up. The game looks nice but I don't know if I would enjoy playing a full game with Zelda 1's old school mechanics.
-

Yeah, this is why I didn't get it yet. Want to wait and see what people think.
-
Isnt it $40 retail? $5 off doesnt sound like much discount.
-
Yup, $39.99 is the MSRP. Amazon seems like the way to go without any deals.
-
Got my copy on the mail :bow Amazon :bow2
They said it would be here on the 14th. They lied.
-
so how much of a zelda 1 clone is this
-
so far it seems like a big Zelda 1 clone with tons of throwbacks to 8-bit and atlus games.
the game looks better than I expected in Camera B. Camera A is what they generally shown off where it is more towards the ground and always pointing north. Camera B is a nice mix between top-down and that behind the back view. The big reason is that depth of field isn't an issue when it is the more Zelda 1 style camera. Camera A or D (D is super close and almost like a third person game) blur the background and it stands out. Camera C is birds eye with little tilt.
character creation is harder than I expected. I'll just leech off of others who make good ones. I tried making Mike Jones but gave up. btw: http://www.3ddotgameheroes.com/hallofheroes/index.html
the game is pretty funny too with the atlus and 8bit game references. one girl in the castle was complaining about a "demons game" that was too hard and she wanted to trade it. Another one was finding a random sign and the message says "oh, you found a sign -signed sir signe" or something like that.
-
One of the very few reasons I'd want a PS3.
-
Waiting for someone more talented than myself to make a Gundam.
-
Oh man this game rocks. I bet it would bore anyone who didn't grow up with 8bit games to death, though.
-
i'm dumb. I meant to say from software references, not atlus. there is even a From Cave where you can get Sticky White Stuff and a heroes soul.
game is pretty awesome. only off-thing while playing is that the hitbox of your character seems to extend beyond what you'd think, probably so you couldn't make a one pixel character and cheat your way through it.
-
Got my copy! But kinda too busy to open it right now :( Will get started tomorrow or Thursday at latest. Hopefully Mr. Gundam can refer me to some hot pre-made mecha by then.

anyway, this game is better than I expected. It is straight up Zelda and at times I forget that it isn't a Zelda game. I mean, I was going through the desert and thought "oh shit, I don't want to get near that like like"
To clarify, it is more Link to the Past than Zelda 1, but it doesn't have everything LTTP had.
-
I'd love to buy this now but I have no idea what I'd do with the Mario $20 credit.
-
To clarify, it is more Link to the Past than Zelda 1, but it doesn't have everything LTTP had.
Well that's good to hear. After watching videos of this it looked like a straight carbon copy of the first Zelda game. I'd much rather go through something similar to a LTTP clone.
Defintiely going to have to check this out.

The game feels much better than I had expected. Slicing dudes up with your giant sword look awful in videos, but feels very satisfying while actually playing.
There haven't been any shots of it, but I actually think the game looks better with the grid disabled. You don't see giant black lines through pixels in an old 2D game so why would you here? It's nice that they offer both types of visuals.
Mechanically and design wise, it feels like a mix between Zelda 1 and Zelda 3.
-
Bought this just now with 3-5 day shipping. Got a $5 credit for mp3s on Amazon
-
It is a 2D Zelda game of similar quality to the Nintendo ones. There isn't much to say. Complains are really minor things like how all dungeons generally look the same and occasional hitbox issues (due to the character creator) but otherwise it is more of my favorite type of game.
The game feels much better than I had expected. Slicing dudes up with your giant sword look awful in videos, but feels very satisfying while actually playing.
yeah, the sword seems odd at first but as you get more swords it makes sense. I think it would have been smarter if they gave you a sword that couldn't spin as the default so you would understand how it works better. Like, the claymore sword is really strong but it works like Zelda 1 did where you can only stab in four directions. I also found that just pressing the direction I want to slash is better than rolling my thumb in a circle; slash left and then press up.
essentially every sword has two groups of stats depending on your health. The giant swords you see in trailers are that way because the character has full health and they upgraded it, similar to how shooting beams from you sword works in Zelda. Some base swords, especially the early powerful ones, have different base stats. So far the big differences about the base stats are the size and spin. The gladius sword is really short and can't spin, meaning that if you played the entire game in that way, it would be much harder.

Started playing this and did the first dungeon. I like the dungeon stuff and exploring the overworld is fun. Water is distracting and is it just me or are the controls kind of stiff? It seems like camera C is the best because otherwise your depth perception is off for dodging things.
Oh and this is the first game I've had trouble playing this entire gen (hell in gaming all together) because of the overscan on my CRT. There's no overscan options and it uses the entire image space so I sometimes can't see enemies when they get near the edge of the screen (aka in dungeons the walls). Kind of ;_; but I don't think it'll be a game breaker.
-
I just found out about this game and it will likely be the catalyst to a PS3 purchase. One that up to a few days ago I felt was still a long ways off and certainly behind the HTPC.
-
Yeah, the perspective (especially towards the edges of the screen) is a bit weird and caused me to mess up a few attacks, Bebpo.
A great game, I think I am gonna put more time into this after I beat Resonance. Supposedly, the last few dungeons are fucking killer... the bee boss took me multiple retries actually :gloomy
-
the last few dungeons feel like a chore, to be honest. the last one especially is just draining. I was all about going through the new game plus right away, but I need a tiny break after it. Not because it is difficult, just time consuming and boring. as for the bosses, I don't think they're that difficult unless you use a Zelda 1 style sword and can't slash (or the book). Mostly I don't like how long it takes to wear them down.
if anyone here gets all the achievements in this game, I would be amazed. There is a spelunker mode you need to complete where one hit kills you. You literally need to finish the game without getting hit once.
-
Did Beezy make that youtube vid?
:lol
-
I got about halfway through dungeon 5 without understanding why everyone had a problem with it.
Then I had to fight a knight guy inside a tight set of blocks, lost a the last third of my health bar in an instant. OK, game over. Tried to progress in the dungeon but it didn't reset all the switches, so I have to navigate the dungeon just to reset the block walls, just to set them all up again for my second attempt. Fucking distinguished mentally-challenged.
Hopefully stepping out of the dungeon will just reset it completely, but even that is a pain in the ass.
-
Oh now I see, if the blue guys touch you you instantly go down to half a heart, even if your health is at max. They will routinely put 3-4 of them together in a narrow room to insta-fuck you. And in tight quarters your sword will sometimes get hung up on the level geometry and cause you not to hit the enemy. Now I see.
-
sounds kind of shit
I was excited to play this day 1, but after playing a bit to get my fill and hearing all the horror stories of the last few dungeons the game is going far down the backlog. Too bad, because it seems like the first half of the game is a great old-school title.
-
It's still great but the second half is literally full of "this is bullshit" moments. Unless you use a guide or scan the entire game world after every dungeon, you will miss out on a lot. One example is how an important item used to moving around the world and attaining the "true" ending is hidden. By hidden I mean there is a completely random square on the map that teleports you to that item's location. On one hand it is similar to Zelda 1, on the other, this game never once requires you to do anything like that in the rest of the game and feels more like Zelda 3.
Without spoiling anything, the best part of this whole scenario is that Zelda logic tells you "ok, I'll get this item in a later dungeon". So you go through the dungeons and never get the item, right? well you finally figure it out by reading a guide or something. Turns out you lost your chance to get that item because the game randomly decided that you can't do it anymore. You can go and find the things required, but they won't be of any use at this point. Then you realize that you've missed a dozen or so other items, events, and weapons because you didn't talk to every single person after every dungeon. In short: the game is more old-school in that broken way than it leads you to believe.
At least there is a new game plus! wait, nope, hardly anything carries over. Only the two forms of currency and sword "levels". Actual swords, health, magic, etc. and events all have to be redone.
but excuse all my bitching. I did like the game a lot, there was just a lot of bullshit at times.
-
Have this game waiting to be played...Red Dead Redemption has put a hold on everything.
-
Another hyped PS3 exclusive turns out to be crap, big surprise.
-
wouldn't really call it a hyped exclusive. It's a budget game and sold as so, and a lot of the game is apparently good.
I think the only hype was because From Software has been on a roll this gen with Armored Core 4A & Demon Souls.
-
hype was from it being a Zelda-clone that caters to people who like old video games. I think if I were to read my own impressions of the game, my opinion of it drops massively towards the second half. As it went on, more problems became apparent, like how every dungeon is the same.
-

$40 is budget?
-
There were no block switch puzzles in Zelda 1, nor were there enemies that brought you to the brink of death with one touch. But I am sure I will get through the dungeon.
-
Nah, it's pretty good. If you keep your expectations in check then you'll have a good time. Lemme lay out the real talk for you guys:
This game is a mish mash of NES archetypes that uses Zelda 1 as its foundation. If you want a classic NES retread with modern graphical bells & whistles then this game is for you. If you think that style of gameplay is bullshit (and understandably so) then skip it. This game wasn't hyped and shouldn't be since it's so niche. It's simply a nice diversion for nostalgiafags and classic Zelda fans.
I don't know why Linkzg keeps incorrectly insisting this game is like Zelda 3 when it doesn't even come close to it in terms of design, direction, or gameplay. All of his complaints and frustrations stem from his fact that the game does a marvelous job imitating the original Zelda (for better or for worse) but he keeps expecting LttP like quality, which is completely absurd. Ignore him and expect it to play like the original Zelda with a modicum of direction thrown in while retaining a classically archaic goal structure that hearkens back to the old NES days. It's pretty fucking obvious, I don't know why he or anyone else would expect different.
One thing that is bullshit are the number of time-sensitive side-quests that you can miss and are pretty fucking ridiculous to figure out. So if you're not using a guide expect to miss quite a few trophies. If you're an anally retentive aspergers twat then I suggest you use a guide to play the game. Again, this game plays like old Japanese NES games so don't be a bitch.
Oh yeah, the game can be brutally difficult if you haven't been weened on old NES games or plain fucking suck. I'm a badass so the game was a breeze for me. HINT: buy some fucking potions and upgrade your sword with pierce you distinguished mentally-challenged fellows. You are given options so fucking use them!
that was kinda rude :'(
I didn't say it was exactly LTTP; I said it was like game that isn't quite LTTP, but closer to it than Zelda 1. The overworld is obviously more LTTP, as are the items, item upgrades, and parts of dungeons (when we start getting into multiple floors, and block switch puzzles as AV mentioned). Then there are other things like bomb spot indicators on walls, and the fact that the game has a map with locations you can quick travel to, as well as the next dungeon/goal. Not to forget all the signs and characters that tell you how to navigate certain area (for example the characters that tell you how to pass the moving sand). Combat is more LTTP depending on your weapon with the ability to slash and do a full spin move. Then there is the dash move. I can't tell if you're just messing with me or haven't played Zelda 1 in a long time.
also, the game is piss easy, imo. With the exception of the final boss, I have every other enemy/boss in the bestiary. The only potion I used in the game was trying to get the 6th boss into the book.

There are a decent number of LttP concepts here. Which is fine, but then you also need concepts from LttP like shortcuts through parts of dungeons you have already completed.
BTW one of the things they did not improve over Zelda 1 was hit detection. They also decided to give him 3x as much health as the typical Zelda 1 boss. I wouldn't mind that because he is fairly easy to dodge, but when your boomerang clinks off his face and doesn't work for no reason or suddenly your shield block doesn't work out like it did the last 10 times, it is a pain in the ass.
you can call for improvements on these things without misunderstanding the game.

I cannot believe the hit detection in this shit. Why make my character hold the shield in his left hand if its the right side that blocks fireballs? It's in the same spot no matter what your avatar is, so what is the excuse?
I think I'm done playing this shit. I don't think I died once in this game up to the 5th dungeon and this boss fight is a clusterfuck. I feel ripped off.

Did you make your own character or use a default one?

made my own, but the shield is always the same isn't it?

It is but maybe the positioning of it changes? I mean if you make a small body does the shield float off away from the body or is it attached? Just throwing out guesses on why the hit detection is off.

Is there a site that shows off all the cool user-made characters?
That's the only thing that interests me about this game since everything else sounds crap to meh.
Is there a Zelda 2 Link? I was kinda fond of that game even though so many fans hate it.

Well, it's a throwback game and has many of the same limitations as an older generation game. It's a bit more complete and polished than Zelda 1, though, and feels more like a cross between it and Zelda 3. Most of its flaws seem to be the result of this retro flavor the game has.

Ok, so dungeon 6 DOES have a shortcut that lets you skip the first third of the dungeon on a second attempt. Why couldn't the last one have this feature? 6 isn't even hard.

So apparently they just upgraded this game with new features:

-50 user-created heroes to choose from
-NG+ keeps your swords now
-Made the times for some of the race circuits more doable

Awesome. I just picked it up last week. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The humor is cool. The *Poof *Poof girl made me laugh out loud.
