Not genre-specific, I just need some drum loops to listen to and tinker with as a base.

I usually have access to a real drummer, but I recently asked this for a friend, and jarosh recommended flstudio:

fl studio. it's actually a full-fledged professional (and very underrated) daw but it's absolutely fantastic for pattern based drum programming. and it's cheap. highly recommended!

edit: and if you're not happy with the free form approach of the in-built sampler where you have to load all your sounds individually just use the fpc generator plugin which pretty much mimics the functionality of an akai mpc unit.

for mixing in general do you guys use macs or pcs? i've heard that macs are the way to go, but i wanted to check with the EB.
