Title: God Of War: Bouncy Fighting Soul Calibur Titties Edition
Post by: bork on August 28, 2009, 04:16:09 PM
Soul Calibur Broken Destiny got an early release and came out today.  Anyone pick it up?  It's not currently compatible with hacked PSPs since it uses firmware 5.55, so I am being forced to play it off the shitty UMD on my old PSP phat.   :'(

It has a data install option, plus Japanese and English voices.  Hopefully the load times won't be too bad.

Wow, the data install pretty much eliminated all the load times!   :o

I didn't see any moves with that name in a quick move list check.

Brief impressions.

-The main menu is as follows:

--------------------------
Quick Match: This is kind of like Ghost Battle in Tekken 5 DR, and set up to look like playing an online match in the console SC4.  You can choose from eight different opponents to play against after every battle, each with his/her own win/loss record.  These CPU players will also use custom characters.

The Gauntlet: Filled with challenges (and brief story snippets) to clear.

Trials: Contains three trials: Attack, Defense, and Endless.

Versus: Ad-Hoc battle.  Titles you get in quick match will carry over to this mode.

Creation: Character creation mode.

Training: Training mode.

Records: Lets you view the game's various play data.

Options: Various options, including Japanese or English voice selection.
--------------------------

-The game has a data install option.  This takes up a little less than 260MB on the memory stick and virtually eliminates all load times!

-The game uses an honor system like the console SC4 versions, so there are a total of 50 "achievements" you can earn.

-Records has a "Friends List" option.  Not sure if that means you can get someone's play data and use it as a ghost character or not.

-All of the original SC4 characters return and are unlocked from the start.  The Star Wars characters and stages are gone, replaced by Kratos from God Of War, and a new original character, Dampierre.  Both characters have their own stages.

-Creation mode is limited to 16 data slots total.

-There are more parts available in creation mode.  A number of original character's 1P outfit parts are now selectable, new parts have been added, and new hair styles have been added.  You can also set a custom character's character portrait by having them pose for you, and then taking a photo.

-The game looks fantastic and is locked at 60fps.  It's very impressive.

-The game play feels a little slower to me, not faster as I'd heard.

If you want a basic arcade mode, trial defense is pretty much it, BTW.

how many stages

Lessee, there's 18 stages:

-Thesmophoros' Imperial Garden
-Thesmophoros' Imperial Garden [Sunset]
-Sleeping Marsh
-Wolfkrone Monument
-Hall Of The Warrior God
-Ostrheinsburg Castle Throne Room
-Tower of Remberence [Omen]
-Tower of Remberence [Degradation]
-Grand Shrine of Palgaea [Sea of Decay]
-Egyptian Temple [Sand Cloud]
-Dark Capital Ostrheinsburg
-Jyurakudai Villa [Twill Damask and Brocade]
-Sailors' Rest [Twilight]
-Grand Labrynth [Corridor of Suspended Time]
-Tower of Remberence [Spiral of Time]
-Tower of Rememberence [Ancient Gate]
-Challenge of the Gods (Kratos' stage)
-Voiceless Volpe Bridge (Dampierre's stage)

Some of them take place at different times of the day or during different seasons than the SC4 versions.  I'm trying to remember what didn't make it in...is it just the circus stage(s) inside the cage and the ice stage?  (Star Wars stages being gone are a given!)

Excellence in customer service and satisfaction retailer 10 years running, Gamestop, not calling up customers?!  THE DEVIL YOU SAY.  THE DEVIL.

MY EXCITING SOUL CALIBUR PURCHASE EXPERIENCE:

When I went there today, the two clerks slouching behind the counter didn't say a word to me.  I had to search for the tiny PSP section, and there was no sign of the game in sight.  No sign of any new PSP game from the last six months, it seemed.  I go up to the counter, and the female clerk (whose face I cannot see; too much hair in the way) nods her head, not looking at me, saying "what's up?" in a monotone voice.  "Did you get Soul Calibur for PSP today?"  She turns around to look inside the case behind her.  It's plastered with flyers for Modern Warfare 2, so you can barely see inside.  The Soul Calibur box just happened to be in the middle.  "Did you pre-order?"  She asks.  "NOPE!"  The clerk then lightly throws the game on the counter, rings me up, and I'm on my way.

But wait, what the fuck-- might as well pre-order Halo 3 ODST while I'm there.  I should use Amazon, but what the hey.  "Sircaniseeyouridineedtocheckitformurmurmurmur," am barely able to hear.  "What?"  "I need to knowyourbirthdaymurmurmurmurmrumur."  "Uhhh....?"  Finally, she says "I.D." clearly enough.  At least I just missed a crowd of fanboys walking into the store as I was leaving.

The mom and pop game store I visited had the US version. Let's just say I did not hesitate to buy this. Great game. Possibly my last UMD game after Dissidia before the PSP go.

WTF, that guy is buying UMD games even though he's going to get a PSP Go?   :lol

What's the chance that the new firmware can be cracked?

I'll have to get back my old PSP phat from a friend if it won't be cracked anytime soon.  It's just too much trouble to reflash official firmware on my slim for just one game.

Besides, I have no qualms about pirating games for a soon to be dead platform.

Why does it matter?  Isn't the firmware check ripped out of the fun version of the game anyhow?

oh reaaaaaally

Is this a new thing?  Until now every psp game I've grabbed has had the firmware checks ripped out so they work on any firmware.  Any psp game I buy I usually just grab the rip and run that instead of the umd to get around firmware hassles.

I haven't played a psp game for a while though.  Last one was Persona JP.

The last time you did that, you couldnt use your save on a newer firmware as well I believe.

Yeah, when you finally upgrade firmware the saves are incompatible.  That's why I'm just never planning on upgrading my firmware again...ever.

Yeah, after doing some tests, nothing released after August boots on my M33 5.00 firmware.  boo.

Maybe I'll just get a PSPGo for upcoming psp games.  I wonder if they'll let you log into the JPN store and buy & download JPN games.  If not I'm sure as hell not buying one.  If so...maybe buy.

People have apparently tried using UMDGEN to remove the firmware check, but it doesn't work.

Are you on 5.00 M33-6?  That's what I use, and everything that's not 5.55 OFW runs perfectly fine on my PSP.  Even Dissidia ran without me having to do anything.  I've never had a problem with my saves, either.

I don't see why you couldn't not buy J-PSP games, but how are you going to pay for them?  That's the biggest issue with J-PSN.  Buying those PSN cards from third parties costs too much.

DAMN YOU SONY FOR TRYING TO STOP PIRACY

They're gonna have this shit cracked soon enough.  Just be patient.  There's only like four games using this FW anyway, lol.

Yeah on M33-6.  Dissidia probably works cause they didn't change it from the JPN version which was pre-5.50.

Plenty of people were saying they had to do a trick with a firmware .txt file to run Dissidia.  I didn't...

If this video is to be believed, they have Broken Destiny running on GEN-B *PHAT* PSPs, but not on the 2000 models yet.

I use a PSP phat but honestly I don't want to play this game, lol.  I just like being caught up with hacking so when games come out that I do want to play I can run them no problem.  Next PSP game I'll play is probably MGS Peace Walker.  In fact I think that's the only psp game I'm planning on playing at all until they announce new titles.

Unless they updated it, you can't have more than one PSN account on a PSP.  So, you could probably make a JPN account, but you'd have to remove it if you want to buy something on the USA store.  I can only hope the Go fixes this major flaw.

Had to enable Execute BOOT.BIN in UMD/ISO in the advanced recovery menu.

The game looks amazing on the PSP.

HOIST THE JOLLY ROGER, MATEYS. ARRRRRRRRRRRR

There is now a version of this game that has been modified to play on any PSP with CFW, even 5.00 M33-6 or LOWER.  :lol

I hope someone defeats 5.55 for every game, though.  I still have Tenchu San Portable sitting here and I want to get Warriors Orochi 2...

EDIT: Looks like Warriors Orochi 2 uses an older firmware.   :)

Just installed Soul Calibur this morning.

First impressions:  nice graphics, fast loading and tons of options.  It's up to par with the best 3d fighters today, which is amazing for a portable game.

Games like this is why I support the PSP.
