Rockstar makes a move onto the iPhone in a big way, announcing both music-maker Beaterator and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for Apple's handheld this fall.
While we were expecting Beaterator thanks to model Jacquetta Wheeler, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the iPhone comes as a complete surprise. Rockstar's Sam Houser explains why these two titles are perfect for the iPhone.
"The simple, pick-up-and-play nature of Beaterator lends itself so well to the Apple platforms. We are happy to deliver an application that allows for such unprecedented sharing and ease-of-use."
And what about Chinatown Wars? "Chinatown Wars is a perfect match for the iPhone and iPod touch. We are very excited to bring this incredibly ambitious version of Liberty City, with this level of detail and immersive gameplay on Apple's new gaming platforms."
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was only recently confirmed for the Sony PSP. The iPhone version should combine that version's enhanced graphics with the Nintendo DS version's touch screen controls. The two great tastes that taste great together? We'll find out this fall.

Smart move by Rockstar...
Apple is really gaining steam in games department.
-
this is a pretty good move. I thought they'd use the chinatown wars game as a template for an eventual iphone game, but didn't expect the whole thing.
-
What a nice Nintendo "exclusive" this game was.
-
The controls will make or break it. I haven't had too many good experiences with games like this on my iphone.
-
i predicted this months ago. it should have been there from the start and not ds
-
maybe it'll sell decently now
-
This game is so going to be ESRB's main bullet point for why they should rate iphone games.
-
awesome, can't wait to not see shit because my thumbs are slipping all over some bullshit on screen analog stick or whatever shitty ass control scheme they come up with. Wait...was that too negative? 8)

I haven't found my Touch to be too fun with games...at least the kind of games where a directional pad has to be emulated.
Going to buy GTA Chinatown Wars on PSP when it comes out anyway....the screens I saw made it look pretty sweet.

Yeah, that was my first reaction.
Of course, in the world of 99 cent to 10 yanqui dollar iPhone games, I'm super curious to find out what the price point will be for what appears to be a full GTA game.
Even remembering that the GTA PSP games were cheap, and cheaper still when ported to PS2, I wonder how many copies they'll sell if they try for USD20.
Ooh. Doesn't the app store have a 150MB cap on it?

Is there any point in even waiting for the psp one? The graphics don't look any better than the ds version and it won't have the touch stuff.

I think Apple has a $9.99 limit for game prices.
And there is no limit on ap sizes. Just in terms of games Myst is over 700MB and needs 1gig to install and Space Ace is over 400.
