It is depressing when Kojima, who barely wont be involved in the new castlevania game, is being hailed as Castlevania's savior and shit. I bet he can fart around the dev team, and GAF would be like, KOJIMA IS REVOLUTIONIZING CASTLEVANIA.
As for Kojima being the best game director in the world, please. The man does not know better gameplay better then your standard game director. He loves his 10 hours cutscenes with a good visual style, but that is all. MGS4 is not more fun then your averaged reviewed game.
-
half-and-half
admittedly, I've really liked almost every game he's made. But I don't understand why people are excited for the new Castlevania or anything/everything associated with him. To me, Castlevania looks on-par with Wolverine or Dante's Inferno, so nothing to be that excited about until there is more to go on.
btw, I still think that MGS4 chapters 1 and 2 are more fun than most games. Problem is that they're two chapters out of five, and a good chunk of the first one is an introduction. I'm pretty annoyed that there weren't any VR Missions, on blu-ray or DLC.
-
I guess its the fact that a 3d castlevania game actually looks good this time out is making people excited (plus some kojima for more spice).
-
Who gives a shit about Kojima - is the new Castlevania game looking like it will be good? I've only seen the trailers but it looked promising.
-
What does Kojima's involvement in the new Castlevania have anything to do with the fact it looks really promising?
Either way, yes he's overrated. I like him (well, MGS4 made me hate him), but he's a one tricky pony.
-
MGS4 made think that yeah, he's kind of a tard
-
pretty much
i used to be a kojima defender, but after that game I just can't do it
-
Reasons why Kojima is a tard:
--Meryl and Johnny proposal scene
--Making Naomi the most overdramatic woman ever
--Making Eva cheesy and awkward to watch. showing granny nipple.
--So much emphasis on Johnny's stupid fart/poop jokes. It's like the guy who says one funny thing that people laugh at (Johnny's bathroom scene in MGS1) but then runs the joke into the ground thinking it's still fresh and clever (MGS4.)
--Breaking up the flow of MGS4 by making you fly all over the fucking place
--requiring installs of every act, with no option for full install, making replays a bitch, since there's 10 minutes of gameplay in each act when you skip the cutscenes.
--Read on gaf that there's 8 hours of cutscenes. I played for 18 hours, I think. Almost half my time was wasted.
--The best part -- most of that gameplay was in acts 1 and 2, when it was still an MGS game.
--Retcons and nonsense connections and forced resolutions of all of the stories
--Not having the heart to really kill it off in the end
--Throwing in a million different genres at the expense of stealth
--forgetting that it's about the stealth
--No fucking stealth
--lack of stealth
--minimal stealth
--Act 4 was wasted by putting you through shitty robot stealth and then more fucking rail shooting. Though I don't care, but if you didn't play MGS1, Act 4 would be completely lost on you. You would have no clue what's happening. You would probably be pissed.
--And MGS online is a whole other disaster altogether
--Even after the ending, the feeling that the game was pasted together by pre-schoolers left me unsatisfied. It's like Kojima wants to be deadly serious, but chickened out in the end, so he went for the hollywood route to keep manbabies on gaf from being too distraught.

I'm still baffled at how anyone could defend this turdburglar after MGS2, and it sounds like MGS4 was just absolutely awful from the above list. Well, better late than never I guess for you guys coming around on him. Of course it means nothing if you don't exercise some will and DON'T FUCKING BUY his next game to teach him a lesson.
-
Kojima games are fucking terrible. The man is absolutely clueless when it comes to the concepts of pacing and subtlety. The gameplay is fun, but it's not enough to make me want to endure hour long cutscenes of people shouting their emotions at each other and droning on and on and on and on about things that could be summed up in about two minutes by a competent director/writer/non-moron.
-
Konami realized that too,so he got the silent boot to the PSP game...
Recently he said that PSP team hates Rising team, yeah right :lol
More like, why i am in charge on a crappy PSP game,i want to play with the big boys :'( :'( :maf
Its like MS telling Molyneux,oh fuck off go make a DS game :lol

Luckily for him, so are gamers.
-
MGS2 had actually had interesting ideas though. Yes, a portion of it was bullshit but it was BALLSY and post-modern and interesting.
MGS4 is just pure fan service from beginning to end.
Franz's post sums up perfectly why MGS4 sucks.
But even with MGS2's ridiculous story, the gameplay was FANTASTIC, especially the Substance version.
In MGS4, the game tries to be 9999 different genres instead of a pure stealth game.
So there's a very big difference between MGS2 and MGS4. I've found that many of us MGS2 defenders HATE MGS4.
-

This has always been lost on me. I don't understand how having to hide for 90 seconds after a grunt sees you is good gameplay. I appreciate how innovative the original on PSX was, for its time (and actually the only one out of the first three that I enjoyed), but I don't get the gameplay argument. To each his own, I guess

90 seconds is an exaggeration (well, it's not when it comes to MGS3...). Apples and oranges, but on the harder diffficulty, the game has such fantastic and rewarding gameplay. You have no map, and successfully sneaking past 6-10 guards in the vicinity just using your senses and surroundings is a thrill for me. I consider them puzzle games almost.
I tend to play MGS games over and over once I beat them, always skpping the cutscenes, playing them on harder modes.
-
Good explanation, Himu. I can see why you like it :)
-
MGS3 is the best game of the last decade so....no
-
I dled the Thief: Deadly Shadows demo.
This shall be my replacement for stealth games now that MGS has jumped the shark.
-
MGS3 is the best game of the last decade so....no
:lol :lol :lol

Caring who a director is or even knowing his/her name is overrated.

I dunno about that, but it's my favorite MGS game and probably my favorite PS2 game.

kojima is a blight upon the industry
fuckers complaining about Wii when Kojima has been shitting up the hobby with casual movie-wannabe shit for years
He writes dumb stories. He doesn't understand gaming. He makes boring games.

Just like an ntard to say that.
Play MGS2 or MGS3 on European Extreme. See if you can beat them.
Then go and play your shitty wii games since you're unable to beat that "casual movie-wannabe shit".
-
Oh that reminds me, he made popular stealth scenarios and games, one of the worst level types next to escort missions.
-
There's a difference between a stealth level and a stealth game.
Stealth levels tend to be shitty because they're placed in games that aren't revolved around sneaking.
Stealth games are all about sneaking.

utter garbage.

In MGS4, the game tries to be 9999 different genres instead of a pure stealth game.
MGS4 follows what Splinter Cell, Tenchu and Hitman did by making stealth an option. Splinter Cell games always let you customize your load out before taking on a mission, so you could take every mission on either by doing stealth or assault; you could even get by all of Chaos Theory and only kill one person. It's like that line in Leon about how pros use knives while wimps hide back with a gun. Past MGS games kinda had this, but since the action controls were so bad, it was either stealth or run/rolling away. MGS4 let you either be a proper killing machine, or get up close and slit some throats, or just avoid everyone (for the first two chapters, then it threw that stuff away). I still enjoyed the games and all, but I don't buy the pure stealth thing. Past MGS games tried to be action stealth games and didn't succeed. I'd say pure stealth is more like Tenchu 4 where getting caught means you're fucked; Batman AA stealth sections are similar. Like I said, I still really like the MGS games. Like Zelda games, it's one of those series that I'm weak for. Still, Splinter Cell Conviction is going to be better than MGS4, probably.
and just about Kojima and Metal Gear, IIRC he wasn't involved with Ghost Babel and that game still rocked.
-
I think he peaked once he realized that his director aspirations couldn't be constrained by the technology at the time anymore.

I'm weak for MGS but that game still pissed me off.
If the entire game was like acts 1 and 2 I'd love it even with the garbage story. If they toned down the cutscene amount it would have been great.
Whatever though.
I'm not asking for pure stealth, because MGS has never been 100% pure stealth. There's always a couple of action packed parts, but I felt the gameplay in general was really lacking in MGS4 period, acts 1 and 2 aside.

I'm a whore for Kojima.

OOOH I'M HIDING IN A BOX NOT MOVING OMG SO FUN
Kojima does not understand that the less the player uses the controller, they less engrossed they are in the game. This should be a fundamental understanding of any game designer.
Kojima is only a god of PR. He knows how to make suckers and then reel them in.
-
Snatcher, Policenauts, and Metal Gear Solid were great. Kojima kinda lost it after that, although MGS3 was pretty good, too.
All these game producer/director people are overrated. I don't understand why they get singled out and the rest of the development staff gets no credit, either.

Sorry. Two fantastic, fun, old-school graphic adventures, released before "animu" even took off.

Replay where you get less play time, skipping the story which is the game's supposed selling point. I rest mah case.

What game designer/developer/producer isn't over-rated? name me one.
A lot of western ones. But Japanese? don't know. Japan developer-samas can do no wrong~!

Nice. I've never done a proper OCD speed run, but I did run through the whole game in about 2 hours 30 mins with the patriot.
That's fucking nuts what he did with the gun switching :o
also, I miss MGS3 online. :bow decent running speed :bow2

nm, I take back every I said.
END FIGHT SPOILERS, kinda, I guess, not that it matters.

I'm not a kojima fan but that's not how a stealth is supposed to work in games. What you're trying to do is play with the enemy's AI to figure out a way around them or pick them off silently or whatever. You spend more time thinking than pressing the buttons. Somewhat like an RPG.
I never liked the stealth in the MGS games though.
-
The best stealth game is Tenchu 4.
-
Hilarious how someone who supports/defends a company who puts out Wii Music says MGS games have little gameplay!
Play European Extreme!

???
They're the people who are ultimately responsible for the vision and final product. I don't see why they wouldn't get the credit or the blame.
-
What game designer/developer/producer isn't over-rated? name me one.
Takeshi Arakawa, the director of The World Ends with You (well, one of the directors) and Dissidia. His name isn't well known yet since Nomura is still the usual frontman.
-
What game designer/developer/producer isn't over-rated? name me one.
Takashi Tezuka is probably the most underrated/appreciated guy in the industry in terms of his resume and the amount of recognition he's received.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario world
Zelda: LttP
Zelda: LA
Yoshi's Island
:heartbeat :heartbeat
:bow :bow :bow
edit: Actually, there's quite a few designers on the Nintendo end that fit the bill as well.
-
Yeah, Tezuka is (or was; he seems to be getting more recognition lately) another example of the pretty common "director overshadowed by famous producer" pattern.
