XBLA continues to be one of my favorite additions of this generation.

It looks like Dishwasher but not hideous.

It's annoying that every 2D game on consoles looks like it was animated in flash. Where's my good ol' pixel art? Where's the frame-by-frame animation?

I haven't played a good sidescroller since Castle Crashers but this looks pretty cool. Hopefully the AI is better than what was shown in that video.

Dust is impressive.  That Wario game on the Wii was also good.

It reminds me of Brock Samson from The Venture Bros., in a very good way.

I want to like Dust but at the same time I feel like it's some sort of a recruitment program for furries.  Like I'll want to fuck a badger when it's all done.

The more 2D sidescrolling beatemups we get, the better. I just want more of them to be 2 players like back in the SNES days. They're the most fun that way. 4 players in Castle Crashers was way too hectic.

Looks like a furry Muramasa.  Kind of want, but the furry aesthetic... :-\

yeah, dust would have been hell lot better without these furry looking characters that you talk to.

So Tiny Toons, Ducktales, Chip N' Dale, Goof Troop and a shitload of other cartoons/games we grew up with were all furries too? You guys need to stop getting bent out of shape whenever you see animals because of a fucked up group of people that you would've never known about if it wasn't for the internet.
Title: Re: Shank looks pretty wicked (XBLA)
Post by: Don Flamenco on September 07, 2009, 12:52:02 PM
yeah, the furry/anime aesthetic is one thing, that wouldn't stop me if it's good, but the main character also seems to have 5 moves.  two ground slashes, the spinning blade thing, an air smash, and an aerial rave.  Seems mashy.  and the non-combat scenes were not too motivating.

Shank looks alright.  I'll have to demo these both before buying.

I see where you're coming from.  To be clear, Rocket Knight Adventures isn't furry.  Star Fox Adventures is.  I don't know about Dust yet, but if it's a good game, I'll play it.

Anthropomorphized animals work better for comedy and light hearted drama stuff (think Bambi, American Tail), but when it's all like "I've taken this awesome warrior squirrel and pitted him an epic quest tinged with a mixture Celtic mythology and Shinto symbolism against a dark evil that threatens to destroy the entire planet of other cute, furry woodland creatures" then things get weird.

All qualms with fetishism aside, I also don't like how furry art tries to make animals all "bad ass" and deep.

That, and I was 10 when I last watched Darkwing Duck or something similar.  It is forgivable as a kid.

my rule of thumb is that if you use anthropomorphised animals for drama or anything encouraging human identification, it's fucked up furry shit, because an ACTUAL human is a more effective tool for communicating sympathy and the broader emotional nuance of a drama. thus the only reason to furry up your cast is to get your creepy yifftastic fantasy shit on

when it comes to adults, definitely.

but animal stuff for kids is not furry, it's just trying to catch kids' attention with distinct characters and to play on their sympathies.  I consider furry, as we know it, to be more of an underground subculture, so Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, pixar/dreamworks, etc. doesn't count.

EA to publish Shank for XBLA/PSN/PC:

Quote
The EA Partners initiative has been quiet lately, but today two new publishing deals were announced, both from the critically-acclaimed indie circuit. EAP will be publishing Hothead Games' Deathspank (above) and Klei Entertainment's Shank (below). Both games are set for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this year, and Shank will come to the PC as well.

The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom and Axel & Pixel as of late, and like EA, they'll be snatching up more stuff in the future.

Title: Re: Shank looks pretty wicked (XBLA)
Post by: iconoclast on August 24, 2010, 02:27:29 PM
It's not a typical beat em up. It's more like a 3D action game in 2D (like a 2D DMC; very similar to the Dishwasher on xbla) than say Streets of Rage. Couldn't care less about playing that in co-op.
Title: Re: Shank looks pretty wicked (XBLA)
Post by: Stoney Mason on August 24, 2010, 02:31:01 PM
Don't really care about co-op for this title. Mainly because I was interested in it way before I knew it even had co-op. I view it as a bonus in this case versus Lara Croft where my initial interest in that title was solely based on it being co-op.

For what its worth I don't give a shit about reviews for any game. I just post them so people can get a sense of what the gaming media is saying. Not as some definitive word on the quality of a game.

demo was alright-ish bordering on boring.  It's like 2D God of War.  I didn't watch the cartoon bits, but maybe that helps? I thought it was cool how they have comic panels on the top of the screen playing a scene as you were slicing guys.

I didn't notice it was 2 gigs and probably wouldn't have downloaded it if I knew.  It ended up being 2 gigs for a 5 minute demo.  YS 7 is too addicting that ignore for even a few seconds.

actually, it's more like Wolverine in 2D (ignore the bunch of older 2D Wolverine games, I'm talking about that god of war one from a year or two ago) because of that pounce move.

edit:  I meant to say I didn't watch the cartoon bits, not 'didn't want' them.  I just ignored that stuff because it was a demo and maybe getting into that stuff would help it all work more.

Yeah I ended up playing the demo.

It's like the dishwasher with better art and worse combat.

Was bored by the end of the demo.  Won't buy.
Title: Re: Shank looks pretty wicked (XBLA)
Post by: iconoclast on August 25, 2010, 09:11:28 AM
Demo was pretty fun, although the gameplay seems very limited/shallow. Not sure if I'm going to buy this now since I only have 3560 points left and I gotta save for Guwange, Zeno Clash, KoF Sky Stage, KoF2002, and Clash of Heroes...

Yeah I'll wait for a sale. :(

Do you unlock more weapons or more attacks as you progress? The demo was fun and all, but Dishwasher's gameplay is far better from what I saw.

I played this and was amazed by the art style but the gameplay is UGH.

I'm not sure which is worse, this or Scott Pilgrim
