Title: Republic of Gamers and other notebook users - do you still have a destop?
Post by: huckleberry on September 07, 2009, 02:04:22 PM
Just curious to know if you guys still use desktop computers at all.  Gaming laptops are awesome - but do they really satisfy all your computing needs?

I have a super fast desktop but it takes up so much space...been thinking about getting this (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827)

You guys think this laptop will be able to replace my desktop?

yes, yes it will

i sold my gaming desktop last month on accoount of it accumulating dust, although i still have a big ol' hp touchsmart "kiosk" machine i use in the dining room for casual browsing/printing

i do all the essential pc gaming i need to -- i.e. time gentlemen, please, titan quest, and sacred 2 -- on the REPUBLIC OF GAMERS

If memory serves me the one that MAF has is 1900x1200? Could be wrong about that.

This FX has 1400x900, which is just fine with me really.

I have tried that laptop only thing before and have always come up short on performance...good to know that this laptop has the kind of performance I am looking for.

...and Best Buy has it on sale for $900  :hyper

I have the older model of the Gateway FX. I would say keep your desktop though, because laptops overheat more easily. Even with a Belkin cooling pad, this sucker gets mighty hot.

Are personal desktops slowly dying out? All I ever hear people talk about nowadays are laptops and HTPCs (I want one).

Only problem I have is that my family and I will be moving to Portland soon and I might need to use a notebook just for a downgrade in the space we have (cannot afford to buy a house right away).

Do high end laptops really overheat that easily when gaming?  I love me some Steam and that would be a shame.

Let's hope!

Desktops are bulky and ugh!

Have to carry a monitor, a tower, speakers, speaker system, mouse, ALL THIS BULLSHIT

:bow laptops :bow2

None of my friends have desktops anymore. ZERO.

REPUBLIC OF GAMERS (and the gateway fx above) push out a fair amount of hot air, but the core temps never get that high -- just make sure there's good ventilation to the left of you (nothing blocking the vent). if yer worried, get a laptop cooler for the longer sessions (or if you have regular 90+ degree heat in yer domicile), although i don't think it's necessary

Overheat? Put it on your desk and it's good. Use a cooling fan if you're traveling.

The FX has a 9800M GTS card it in while the Asus that I am looking at has a GTX 260m - here (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9366615&type=product&id=1218092150740) is a link to it.  Slightly faster processor and video card for 300 more...think its worth the price bump?  I hate to be a joiner but that Asus RofG notebook looks pretty damn nice too.

yes, oc'ing them is asking for trouble. the heat tolerance/dissipation model used in them is very closely keyed to the baseline heat output of the cpu/gpu

Only a Laptop, way more comfortable. Bought one with an external graphic "booster" so it even should be able to play BR/HD-DVDs (according to some reviews). Bought a mouse/keyboard combo for 20€ so I can surf while having that thingy connected to my plasma which also works fine. And its completly quiet (even when not in the silent mode) plus I can even when work in bright sunshine when I crank up the brightness setting (on my last laptop with a matte screen you saw next to nothing in the sun)

I have 17" HP Pavilion notebook, and it pretty much got me to toss my desktop away. It does modest gaming, but the hardware is a couple of years old. That said, with Windows 7, it suits all my needs. Photo editing, writing, web browsing, multimedia, etc.

If this project sells, I'll likely sell it and buy a notebook for a Blu-ray drive, so I can watch movies while I travel.

Hate laptops with a passion.  Have one for school but once I'm done it's going in the trash cause it'll be an outdated PoS by then if it isn't already.

Hate laptops.  They are so slow and expensive and the keyboards are shit to type on and they are uncomfortable to use and take up space on your desk and are not super easily upgradable and fixable anytime a problem occurs.  Hate

After I finish school forever I will never own another laptop again in my life.  For trips I've found that my iphone does 95% of what I do on my laptop except it's awesome and fits in my pocket.  Desktop + future cellphones = you are set.

:piss laptop :piss2

Yeah, buy a gaming laptop.

And then set it up on a desk so you can use a mouse.

Morons.

himu, get yourself a pack of microfiber cloths at walmart for all your electronic cleaning needs (you will find them in the auto cleaning section)

that's what i wipe down all my electronics with, works like a charm with no need for chemical cleaners (just a bit of plain old tapwater from time to time)

Is it possible to watch dvds upscaled on my RoG laptop? It says "hdvision" on it, so I'm curious. I don't have a ps3 currently, my 360 is at home and I don't have my hdtv up here at school and I can't watch dvds in sd anymore...

also, overclocking is fun for a few minutes but it does raise heat levels to alarming

google "Media Player Classic" - it'll load and play (with upscaling) just about any file format

So it upscales automatically or can I change it in the settings?

no options for upscaling, your vidcard should handle that (there are video "filters" like sharpen, etc)

just play around with the MPC settings, and the settings in your nvida panel, you can get your blacks and colors looking pretty sweet with some tweaking

double click on video/alt+enter to view it in full screen, wmp as well.

honestly there is no such thing as "upscaling", any sane player is capable of viewing videos in full screen.

and if you are using mpc/cccp you might wanna read this: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#What_video_renderer_is_recommended.3F

if you're watching a video/dvd below the resolution of your screen there will always be upscaling

some sources will always look better than others, depending on how the individual source material was filmed

I haven't fully switched over from my desktop to my laptop, just like 94%.

If/when I get some decent speakers for the laptop and rework some custom apps I wrote (which involves switching backend data sources), then my desktop will be able to officially snuff it.
