Title: So I watched Candyman last night
Post by: mojovonio on September 16, 2009, 12:38:45 PM
Not only is the movie really well done, but it proved to me that Tony Todd is the ultimate badass.

Bruce Willis doesn't do his own stunts, neither did Stallone. Jackie Chan jumps off ladders and shit.

How is Tony Todd more of a baddass than all 3 of these pussies combined?

HE HAS A SCENE WHERE HE HAS UNGODLY AMOUNTS OF FUCKING BEES IN HIS MOUTH

99.999999999% of people would outright refuse or run off the set when asked to put copious amounts of bees in their mouth. Tony Todd was just like "yeah fuck it."

:bow TONY TODD :bow2

I haven't seen it in years, but I remember it scaring the shit out of me as a kid.

It's a shame the sequel was so hilariously bad

Wait, according to Wikipedia there are two sequels.

Farewell to the Flesh and Day of the Dead, I think.

I remember Farewell being decent and Day being terrible.
that's fully correct.

Candyman is still my choice for the best Clive Barker movie.  And how the hell did Tony Todd not have a better career, I don't know?

Fuck no.

Hellraiser, Lord of Illusions and Midnight Meat Train are all better.

The Midnight Meat Train was actually good? I avoided it because I heard Rampage Jackson had a part

Hellraiser I ain't seen, Lord of Illusions is fun but flawed, and Midnight Meat Train doesn't suck but just ain't as great as Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyma...

Jackson's role in MMT is about two minutes long if that.  Its worth seeing.

Hellraiser was awesome, but the effects have really aged badly. I'd love to see it re-released with an effects overhaul, but the closest we'll ever come will be the inevitable (and likely shitty) remake.

He has the best part in the movie!

Midnight Meat Train was pretty fun. If you haven't seen it, but dig that type of stuff, you're doing yourself a disservice.

... Hellraiser really hasn't aged that badly. I'll take stop motion and prosthetics any day over CG. The story is solid, and the film is pretty damn good. Leagues better than Candyman.

Candyman is pretty mediocre. Folks have kind of a nostalgia trip for it, but it's a pretty "eh" film. I put it in the same tier of Barker films with Nightbreed.

Lord of Illusions is also better!

Tony Todd didn't have a better career because everyone my age refused to watch him in ANYTHING.

Motherfucker was scary and I don't need to be reminded of the motherfucking Candyman.

From a first-time watcher's perspective though, it can be a bit of a tough sell. I got a friend to watch it after raving about how good it was, and got a few raised eyebrows and smirks when the effects were going on.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it's a must see, so long as you're the sort of person who can accept dated effect visuals. Some folks can't get around that.

Barker's directing the Hellrasier remake due out in 2011.

Also, Candyman is far from mediocre. I love the way they build Candyman up through half of the movie.

I didn't think Barker was doing it.  Last person I'd heard attached to directing it was Pascal Laugier, which would've been PERFECT, but he's since dropped out.

Sounds like you need better friends!

If films are only special effects to someone, then I gather they don't like much of anything made before 1994.

That's what the sock-puppets and the bore are for.

Seriously, while I agree, it's easy for me to understand when people who aren't film enthusiasts can get taken out of a film with bad (or in this case, just old) effects. It's just a shame when people fixate on that element of the film, like it's all they took away from it.

True.  Even the commercials for the movie gave me nightmares.  Didn't watch it until I was a teen.

I was just talking to my grandmother about this film and she said she hated it, and that's when my father said under his breath, "That's because it has black people and bees." :lol

Racist white people. :lol
