Title: Resident Evil 5 Alternative/Gold Edition

Fuck, day one. Going to sell my original RE5 copy now.

RE4 played great with waggle. Saggle would work out well, too.
So far Alternate Ending is Ps3 exclusive.

Willco hate in 3..2..1..

My main problem with this is that it's control scheme involves holding the DualShock in one hand and the wand in the other. How the hell is that ideal?

Call me crazy, but I actually tried to hold DS3 with one hand, just like in the picture.
It works surprisingly well. The DS3 isn't as bulky or heavy like the X360 controller.

The game will likely have a standard control scheme too, just like RE4 Wii Edition did.

RE5 had flashback scenes where you went through a Mansion to get Wesker.  I'm guessing they let you play through that area now.

then you better wait for inevitable RE5 X360 GOTY Edition, Jansen.

Quote
Capcom hinted that an Xbox 360 edition of the game is also planned. "In regards to the Xbox 360, a lot of fans have enjoyed the game on the console. So we are working to release the additional content in another format, as a product." Project lead Miho Suzuki did not mention if the title was one of the Project Natal games that Capcom is currently developing.

Can't wait to play RE5 like this..

I'm not sure what's funnier: the assbackwards control scheme or the Wii fans who are confused and hurt over this (or think this will mean a Wii edition is coming).

They will probably make a new Wii RE spin off game eventually (hopefully) that's in third person like RE4 but the controls in the RE4 Wii edition were definitely better than RE5's controls.  I don't know how this dual shock/saggle thing will work but people say it's not that bad because the controller is so light.

It only matters if it come to PC.  I was considering rebuying RE5 for PC when it dropped in price, but now, it's either this or never.  Just judging from the benchmark, RE5 looks so much better on my computer than it did on the 360.  60+ fps 1080p maxed out :rock

can't be any worse than RE5.

They took the encounter between Chris/Jill and Wesker and made another set of levels out of it.  What do mean "never happened?"  It set up what happened to Jill in RE5.   :lol  The environments and presumably enemy types will probably be new, too, so what is there to complain about?

Them re-releasing this with the Sony Saggle for full price next year is something to complain about, but we don't know if they are going to do that yet.  It could end up "greatest hits" style and sell for $30.  What I am hoping for is that the 360 version gets the new stuff as DLC instead.  The quote "So we are working to release the additional content in another format, as a product" gives me hope.

There's a nunchuck in the making. But you can use the DS3 if you don't want to buy the nunchuck.

Quote
There have been rumblings that Sony is currently working on a proper Nunchuk peripheral — that it is already in the design phase. Yoshida was unwilling to confirm this secondary peripheral, but did concede that using the PS3 DualShock 3 as a Nunchuk was "the cheapest solution". Yoshida wasn't being glib: While the PS3 DualShock 3 might not make the most attractive Nunchuk solution, it does appear to work.

Meaning? Meaning that gamers won't be forced to shell out for yet another peripheral.

Saggle   :-\

This thing is too late.  Wii sales are tapering, people don't care about motion control as a concept, they cared about "getting that game with the 5 sports on it that we played at thanksgiving that one year and oh yeah, it played mario kart also."   Good job sony.  At least MS is trying something different with their peripheral.  But both will get a few games, then die like all other add ons.

You'd think someone would watch a video review from CNET or a site like it and apply what they've seen to their own videos. But no, let's just do five painfully long minutes of bullshit nobody cares about.

Production values people. Even with an old Hi-8 Handicam you can do something fairly decent.

production values, a straightforward, well presented, succinct script, and possibly a makeover of some sorts.  also try not to be between the ages of 0 to 19. :lol

Asian Babe from GTA DS Strips Off

Chinatown Wars assassin looks killer as she gets her kit off.

By Too Ashamed, January 23, 2008

Has it really come to this?

One look at the 'news aggregation' sites is enough to depress the editorial team of any games website these days.

Apparently, first-hand reporting on titles like GTA: Chinatown Wars for the DS and The Lost and Damned for Xbox 360 in obsessive detail is not enough to compete with, ooh let's see, a story about Microsoft paying $50 million for exclusive GTA content - a story that is currently NINETEEN MONTHS OLD.

So we say, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

This OFFICIAL artwork for Chinatown Wars has never been seen before, and features one of the lead characters TAKING HER CLOTHES OFF.

In the picture, you can see her PINK BRA, CREAMY SKIN, PERT BREASTS and LUSTY LONG LEGS. She also has a KNIFE which is CONTROVERSIAL.

The image, published today, appeared in trade magazine MCV as part of an advert for the game. We scanned it. The end.

WTF?  :lol

I'm gonna willingly bend over for Super Street Fighter 4, but I'm not buying a new version of RE5 just to add 2 hours to the campaign unless that shit is like $15.

capcom is full of shit.

both SFIV and RE5 aren't getting this crap as dlc because the fanbases for both are big enough suckers to buy another retail disc for shit that should be dlc. obviously capcom is aware of this.

you disappoint me capcom but i still love you

SSF4's getting a lot, so it makes sense for it to be on a new disc.  They said it won't be full price; I'm fine with it.  With RE5, it is just that smaller new scenario being added.  There's no new game play and they're definitely going to be reusing some assets.  So it should be released as DLC.

it makes just as much since for it to be dlc as well. but like i said, capcom knows they can sucker you out of a another $40 seeing as how this has been par for the course with fighting games since they've been on consoles.

progression be damned, let's just stick to the established way of doing things forever!

I wonder what type of enemies you'll find in the game.
Such a shame this is a 2 hour experience.  :-\

RE6 should also have a mansion. I really hated the big open environments in RE5.

This is what I'm hoping for.  Two hours of new content and saggle on the Sony side isn't worth another $60.  I would assume that this will be budget priced, though.  SSF4 is getting a lower price point, and it will have shitloads of new content in comparison.

A couple of weeks ago, we told you about new Resident Evil 5 content coming as a new Japanese version of the game called RE5 Alternative Edition. We asked you guys to tell us how you wanted to get your mitts on the content and gave you the option to vote for either digital download or a new boxed product. We let the poll run for a couple weeks and then snagged a bunch of your comments from the original blog posting as well as from threads in the forums and presented it all to the RE5 team in Osaka.  As of this morning, we had close to 1500 people vote for DLC and close to 900 vote for a new physical product. In addition, we had over 300 comments on the blog posting, which is amazing to all of us here at Capcom.

And here’s an example of Capcom Unity in action: based on your feedback, in North American, European and Australia territories, Capcom will be making the new RE5 content for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 available as downloadable content. You will not be asked to purchase a new copy of the game just to get at the new stuff, just make sure to hold on to your RE5 disc and you’ll be ready to roll in Spring 2010 when we make available new Resident Evil adventures (and some other things we haven’t told you about yet) for you. Keep that in mind when thinking about selling RE5 back or handing it off to a friend ;)

I'll be honest: we had a strong feeling going in that most folks were going to be ticking the box for digital delivery. Seeing as how we were asking you ONLINE to tell us if you would like to nab new game content via the internet, we thought we may have been skewing the results a bit. What surprised us, however, was just how many of you ended up voting for a new physical package. We’re still trying to wrap our heads around this strongly stated position from a vocal range of the community, but we've definitely heard you guys loud and clear as well.

Thanks to all of you as part of Team Unity in helping us reach this decision!

If a platinum hits version comes out at the same time, and is cheaper than buying the DLC, sure.  Otherwise I'll just download...this content is likely to be something you play through once or twice, then the game goes back on the shelf.

We are pleased to confirm today that a variety of new content for the hugely successful RESIDENT EVIL 5 will be available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 next year. We plan to release two new downloadable episodes, a host of new costumes, and a new “MERCENARIES REUNION” mode featuring 8 new playable characters and weapon load outs.

For those RESIDENT EVIL fans who prefer a box copy, we are also happy to report that we will be releasing a RESIDENT EVIL 5: GOLD EDITION that will include the original game plus all additional content, making this the ultimate Resident Evil 5 experience.  RESIDENT EVIL 5: GOLD EDITION will be available for $49.99 as a single Blu-ray disc for the PLAYSTATION 3 or as a DVD with a token for the downloadable content for XBOX 360.

$49.99 for everything or $14.99 for everything if you already have RE5.  I'd consider re-buying the 360 if the content was on the disc, but it's a download token...

Just received the PR, new mercs!

RE5 Gold edition and more dlc details confirmed
Hi
Last week we confirmed that Capcom would be releasing new content for the hugely successful Resident Evil 5 for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Capcom plans to release two new downloadable episodes, a host of new costumes, and a new ‘ The Mercenaries Reunion’ mode, featuring eight new playable characters and weapon load-outs. All of this content will be available for download via Xbox Live and PSN next year.

For those Resident Evil fans who prefer a box copy, we are also pleased to announce that we will be releasing a Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition that will include the original game plus all additional content, making this the ultimate Resident Evil 5 experience. Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition will be available across Europe for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at a competitive price.

Previously only seen during cut-scenes of the original Resident Evil 5, the first new episode titled ‘ Lost in Nightmares’, finds BSAA agent, Chris Redfield, working with his partner, Jill Valentine, as they investigate Ozwell E. Spencer’s hideaway. Spencer, the evil mastermind and co-founder of Umbrella Corporation, has been concealing a new evil deep within the basement of his mansion. Chris and Jill discover this grotesque evil standing in their way as the two enter deeper into the catacombs beneath the mansion.

Simultaneous with the release of ‘ Lost in Nightmares’ new costumes for Chris and Sheva will be made available, allowing the player to experience Resident Evil 5 with a fresh new look and feel through both game play and cut-scene playback. A refresh of Mercenaries Mode, ‘ The Mercenaries Reunion’, gives players new playable characters and weapon load-outs which provide players additional challenges as they aim to shoot down as many enemies as they can within a limited time. Each piece of downloadable content will contain two new playable characters. The Gold Edition will feature all eight.

Please see below for a release schedule for all additional content:

Platform    DLC:    Planned release date
360    Lost in Nightmares    17 February
360    Costume Pack 1    17 February
360    Episode 2 (title TBA)    3 March

     DLC:

Capcom announced in its annual report that Biohazard 5 Alternative Edition [Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition] will no longer appear on Xbox 360 in Japan, only the PS3 version will be available. The reason is the low sales of 360 games in Japan. The game will still be available on Xbox 360 in US and Europe.

I was wondering why it wasn't being listed for sale by import shops.  This doesn't make a lick of sense-- they are still going to be selling a platinum hits version of the regular RE5 in Japan on the 18th for 4400 yen.  Why not throw in the DLC codes with it?

I think they're supposed to be about an hour each?  Probably like ACII DLC (40-60 mins) but the difference is that RE5 DLC might have replay value with coop and arcade action.

Not hyped because I've realized DLC is always unsatisfying.  You wait 6 months and you get something that's lasts you one evening and then that's it.  The only exception are RPG expansions that are like 6-20 hours like Shivering Isles & Disgaea 3 & Fallout 3.

But I'll still play it and get my 2 hours of fun.  Maybe even play some coop if it's good and Mercs if it's improved.  Didn't play much RE5 mercs at all, didn't find it as fun as RE4 mercs (either that or standards have risen since).  Are there any gameplay changes to the new mercs mode?  Or is it just new maps/characters?

For a total of $14 you get two new scenarios (the first one will even have an RE1-style camera option), Mercs Return with eight new characters, and new skins for Chris and Sheva in the main game.  It's a good deal overall.  You can skip the costumes if you want and just get the episodes for $5 a pop.

Mercs Return just has new maps/enemy placements, IIRC.  It's a lot of fun and blows away the RE4 Mercs, especially in co-op.  I am disappointed that they aren't also including a "Versus Returns" with the new characters.

The Mercenaries Reunion has been a tad disappointing so far.  I played the first level and it was the same, save for the occasional ground crawler-thingy that usually shows up on the African Village stage.  The Mines level also seemed the same except for the addition of a big black dog running around.

I was hoping for completely different enemy mix-ups, and so far it is not delivering.  Also if you don't buy the costume packs, then you're going to be missing four characters in this mode.  You also cannot use the original Mercenaries characters.

They also changed up the music and the announcer (now it's Jill).

Lost In Nightmares has checkpoint areas, but nowhere to save.  You have to finish it in one sitting.

The first part of this scenario is pretty boring.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
You run around the mansion, which is similar to the RE1 mansion (again) only there are NO ENEMIES WHATSOEVER.  So you just get items and proceed to the basement.  It's not long, but still-- ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz.  What were they thinking?
[close]

Once you get past that part, things get better.  You'll face a new enemy type plus a familiar "friend."  I died at one part with two of the new enemies (didn't even realize they could come at you in pairs!), and decided to stop, only to find out that the checkpoints don't save your game.  Oh well; it's only supposed to take 1-2 hours to finish.

No item transfers; it's all self-contained so you are stuck with the weapons they give you.  You start out with the pistol and get a shotgun, uzi, and rifle pretty quickly.  There's achievements, plus hidden score medals all over the place.

The chapters didn't come out together? wtf  I thought it was a pack for $14 for everything?

$14 total for everything.  The first DLC and costume packs are out now, and the second set comes out next month.  That's why I caved in and ordered Alternative Edition on PS3; it's got all the DLC stuff on the disc and I am too hyped up to wait for the second pack.   :lol :'(

They are self-contained episodes that have nothing to do with each other.  The only thing you are "missing" by not having both sets of DLC right now are all the characters playable in The Mercenaries Returns.

If you check the front door several times after LIN starts, you can switch to the classic RE static camera view.
Title: Re: Resident Evil 5 Alternative/Gold Edition
Post by: bork on February 17, 2010, 07:13:09 PM
Finished Lost In Nightmares on normal in about an hour, got an A rank and unlocked Jill for use.  It definitely picked up after that boring enemy-devoid mansion run in the beginning, which if you run through doesn't really take much time at all.

After you finish the beginning part, you then go below the mansion.  This is where things really start to take the "survival horror" turn that many felt was missing from RE5.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
First you have the new enemy type lumbering around.  You take out a few of them and then the game really gets going: You are dumped into a huge sewer area filled with corridors, and have to kill the enemy without your weapons.  You do this by finding cranks and using them to rig up old ceiling traps, lure the big guys underneath, and make some Jill sandwiches.  This was pretty tense and harkened back to the older RE days.  I bet playing this part with the static camera makes things even crazier.  You can (thankfully) see the enemy position on your map, so it's not a chore finding them and luring them to where you need to go.
[close]

After that it's the Wesker fight right out of the cut scene from the main game.

What was interesting about this play through is that not everything was accessable-- there was a locked door in the mansion and an item socket in the (spoiler covered) area that I didn't make use of, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's more to do on the veteran or professional (needs to be unlocked) difficulty settings.  I'm going to play through it with Jill on veteran next and see what happens.
Title: Re: Resident Evil 5 Alternative/Gold Edition
Post by: bork on February 17, 2010, 07:35:57 PM
LOL, with Jill there is a part where you have to play a piano to open a door (classic RE!) and hit the A or X button at the right time.  She gets pissed if you fuck up.   :lol

It's only about an hour long but works well for a couple of playthroughs.  I highly recommend playing it on veteran and then playing it again on professional--
spoiler (click to show/hide)
You will get a few enemies in the mansion part on those difficulties, making it a little better.
[close]

I just played 2P co-op on both difficulty settings and we were able to coordinate the sewer area pretty well.  When you play on professional, enemies don't show up on the map in that area, making it a whole lot more intense!   :lol  We fucked up on the Wesker fight though; was trying to go for the cheev where you hit him enough times.  I still need to destroy all the score stars, beat up Wesker, and get an S rank (we were so close until the Wesker fight, lol) before I'm completely finished with it.  We got good enough at LIM that we were just running right past all the enemies, getting the items/keys, and rushing to the exits.

If you play co-op with someone you don't know and they don't have a mic, quit playing...you need to communicate to get the best score/keep from dying in the sewers.

wasn't as good as i expected, you just fight one enemy where you basically run/shoot it in one area and in the next area you just lure it in some death trap with your bro.

still the mansion was full of RE1 fanservice and playing as hot brunette jill was worth it.

MCD, did you play on normal?  It's too easy on normal; veteran is better but pro is really where it's at.

The second set of DLC is more likr a new RE5 level, and has a shit-ton of enemies and new cut scenes. I think Capcom skimped on Lost In Nightmares because they didn't want to pay Wesker's voice actor again, lol.  Also that sewer area would make for a perfect Mercenaries level.

I hope Capcom makes RE6 a lot like LIN. When I ran out of ammo I was like Oh Shi. It heightens the tension and just makes the game a lot scarier.

I hope Capcom makes RE6 a lot like LIN. When I ran out of ammo I was like Oh Shi. It heightens the tension and just makes the game a lot scarier.

In terms of atmosphere/play style:

LIN = RE1 fan service

DE = RE4 fan service (according to CVXFREAK)

So I think it depends on how much you like the two styles of play for how much you will enjoy this DLC.  I still need to play through LIN using the RE1-style camera.

I am making my way through Alternative Edition now.  Playing on too-easy Amateur and skipping and cut scenes/running past everything possible to do it quickly, although I am getting the BSAA medals as I go.  Up to 3-1 now.  Hope to have Desperate Escape playable by tonight!
Title: Re: Resident Evil 5 Alternative/Gold Edition
Post by: bork on February 21, 2010, 01:59:36 AM
Finished Desperate Escape on Normal in 43:55.  While it's shorter than Lost In Nightmares, it's a hell of a lot more action-packed; there are almost no lulls in the action and you will have Manjini coming at you left and right.  I died several times (and Josh did a few times too) as it got pretty challenging in some parts.  Can't wait to try it on Veteran and then Professional!

Although it doesn't have any real new enemies, it was a hell of a lot more satisfying to play through than Lost In Nightmares was, and also feels like the more replayable game of the two scenarios.

It also has new cut scenes and better production values than Lost In Nightmares.  The game does a good job in filling in the gaps of Josh and Jill's whereabouts before the end of the main RE5 campaign, plus answers the question of what the industrial area looks like around the tanker that we didn't get to see during Chris and Sheva's adventure.

The end of this campaign is completely insane.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
You are on a large rooftop area, with a small building and some other areas to run to/hide in, and you have to survive wave after wave of enemies, including chainsaw and gattling gun mini-bosses until a five minute timer runs out.

  Total rush!

I haven't tried out the other versions of Chris and Sheva, or Josh yet, but Rebecca kicks so much ass in Mercs Reunion.

They're both worth it IMO.  Regarding the second DLC being like RE4, it does remind me of the later areas in the game with tons of military Ganados coming at you...I guess.  I'm not really getting that comparison after playing it.  Or it's like a Mercenaries stage on a bigger scale. But regardless, it's just balls to the wall action, and plenty of it.  Shit-ton of fun; easily the best level in RE5, in terms of action.

Gold is going to be $49.99.

RE5 new is $29.99...used is what, $19.99-$22.99?  So you could save a couple of bucks if you buy it used and the DLC.

-Versus is $5
-Costume Pack #1 is $2
-LiN is $5
-Costume Pack #2 is $2
-DE is $5

A lot of people don't care for Versus mode.  If you don't buy that, more money saved.  If you don't care about the costume packs, that's another $4 saved, although keep in mind that those four costumes also count as being four characters in The Mercenaries Reunion.

But if you don't think you're going to care about the Mercenaries stuff that much, then just get the vanilla RE5 and the two DLC episode packs.

Mr. Gundam, you also get The Mercenaries Reunion when you buy the DLC.  It's separate from the regular Mercenaries game.  Same levels, slightly remixed, with a different set of characters to use.

Mercenaries is probably the only thing I'm gonna do in RE5, lol.

Ah, then I'd recommend you get the costume packs.  Fairy Tale Sheva OWNS.  I like Rebecca a lot too (she comes with Desperate Escape).

On PS3, I would.  It's nice having everything already on the disc; pop it in and go.  Just remember that if you don't have an RE5 save file, you're going to have to play through the entire game again to unlock the new stuff.

And on that note, now that I have RE5 on both systems...man, 360 wins again!  The PS3 version may have no screen-tearing, but it has noticeable frame rate drops (and a worse frame rate overall) and even freezes for a split second (on occasion) when you snipe enemies in areas where there's a lot of characters on-screen.

Because I hate DLC crap. And if I would've bought it today, I wouldn't have played it anyway.

I've bought Magic Orbz DLC a few days ago, though.  :-\

Well, I dont buy DLC either. But this isnt just some unlockable key held back stuff (could be - who knows). This is easily worth a quick $10 ($5 each - minus the doofy costume packs).

Desperate Escape and Costume Pack #2 are up on XBL.

I don't know if I should download it now or wait until I have nothing else to play to check it out.  Maybe they'll be kind and have a DLC bundle!

it's called RE5:Gold Edition and it's $40.  Hey, $30 for the game, then $10 for about $20 worth of DLC.

It's the real deal this this time around.  They reuse enemies in desperate escape, but the locations are all 100% new.

This DLC is amazing. I am reminded that

a) this game looks amazing

b) this game feels amazing

c) this game controls amazing

d) the online is rock solid tight

How I missed you RE5

Also the new enemy is awesome. A bullet sponge though, for sure.

Desperate Escape is a very good satisfying dlc, was a bit hard on Veteran but good nonetheless.

it is very similar to Ada mission on RE4 just on COOP.

Does anyone want to do LIN and DE with me? My stoner friend sucks dick at this DLC and keeps dying at the fishhook guys. I'm getting impatient and want to 200 (100 x 2) this shit ASAP so I can send it back to GameFly.

Ok, we finally had a good night and finished both DLCs

LIN is soooooooooooooo good. Can you imagine a remake of RE1 in these graphics? Or RE2? My god that would be amazing. The sewer part is the weakest bit.

DE is soooooooooooooo FRUSTRATING. Holy shit. nothing but endless enemies, coming and coming and coming. Then the final bit where you have to survive for 5 minu- no wait the timer resets for another 2 minutes. This will probably be the most frustrating thing on Professional.

Clearly Pro requires some Uroboro's!

 :lol

I played LiN through professional with both friends and strangers, but no way am I gonna even try DE with anyone but competent people I know.  The thing is, I wasn't even trying to go for achievements most of the time, so I would just be like "just run past these guys" or "we can just run around in a loop at this point" at the end of DE, but the idiot I was playing with would charge head-on into a crowd of enemies and get himself killed.  "I THINK IMMA BE OK ON DA ROOF!!!!" and then five seconds later, dead.   ::)

Played this some more yesterday. 1.1 annoyed me. But the boss fight in 1.2 sold me on the game.
