Title: Early consensus on Zombieland: :rock
Post by: Great Rumbler on September 28, 2009, 03:50:49 PM
Zombieland reviews (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/zombieland/)

Quote from: Bloody Disgusting
Fleischer's film is beautifully shot (his slow-mo sequences are stunning), engaging, funny, heartfelt and more importantly F-U-N. If you're looking for a movie that has it all, Zombieland is a season pass worth picking up.

Quote from: Variety
Harrelson's unexpected line readings and reactions sometimes elevate Zombieland to a level of inspired nonsense worthy of Shaun of the Dead.

Quote from: Ain't It Cool Movie Reviews
It's got nothing on its mind beyond pleasing you from scene to scene, set piece to set piece, and director Ruben Fleischer ladles on just enough style to make it all fun...

Quote from: Horror.com
I highly recommend Zombieland to anyone with an offbeat sense of humor and an unnatural craving for Twinkies.

Quote from: Dread Central
A killer comedy with a vicious sense of humor. The running undead look fantastic and are dispatched in a never-ending, ever-evolving innovative shopping list of carnage. You'll applaud every crunch.

I'll wait for real critics. Most horror movies get early rave reviews from horror sites on RT, and then get trashed when the rest of the opinions come out.

That said, I really want this movie to be good.

Jennifer's Body didn't. All the early reviews trashed it.

Zombieland won't stay at 100%, sure, but the positive reviews and the awesome trailer are enough to get me in the theater this weekend.

Uh Drag Me To Hell was like 1% below a Pixar film on RT.

There are always anomalies, like Drag Me to Hell.

But for every one of those, there is a Big Trouble in Little China or The Mist.

I expect it to be a fun little genre flick but not as good as Shaun.

Yeah, I'm going in expecting a poor man's Shaun of the Dead.

But that's still better than JENNIFER'S BODY.

But that's still better than JENNIFER'S BODY.

Did you actually go see that?  I'll never understand the mindset of people who can tell that a movie will suck, but have to go see it anyway.

Is Shaun of the Dead really that beloved?  Or is the tremendous goodwill towards it just the product of being a good movie in a genre that was rarely represented at the time of its release?

I remember liking it at the time, but I caught it on cable recently and it just seemed kinda stupid.  "Oh hee hee, they are throwing records at teh zomebies".

Yeah, it's really that good.  And Hot Fuzz is even better.  And you haven't posted pics of scantily clad DragonCon chicks yet.  What's up with that!
Title: Re: Early consensus on Zombieland: :rock
Post by: border on September 28, 2009, 04:52:40 PM
I didn't really feel like taking pictures at DragonCon this year.  Dunno why -- I brought the camera and everything, but for the most part I just found other ways to spend my time.  I guess it's gotten to the point where I didn't like to feel obligated to take all these pictures and stop everyone for a photo.  I snapped maybe 10 pictures of some really good costumes that I wanted to remember, but there's no 90-photo set this year.  Someone at GAF did a DragonCon cosplay thread though if you do a search for it.

Yeah, it's really that good.  And Hot Fuzz is even better.

Hot Fuzz got better upon subsequent viewings (I really hated it when I saw it the first time) but it still ain't fucking with Shaun. Shaun is just incredible. Which reminds me: Simon Pegg needs to stop fucking around and make another movie with Edgar Wright and that fat bloke demi lusts after.

Me too. I saw it with the wife in the theater and I didn't care for. Bought the DVD when it came out and I love the film now. I don't know if I would rate it higher than Shaun, but it is still great in its own right

I think Hot Fuzz is the better produced film - the script is much tighter, Edgar Wright shows maturity as a director, etc.

I can see someone liking Shaun of the Dead more depending on genre sensibilities, though.

Title: Re: Early consensus on Zombieland: :rock
Post by: Human Snorenado on September 28, 2009, 06:41:06 PM
I dunno, maybe it's because I saw Shaun for the first time on dvd and the first time I saw Hot Fuzz was at an early screening with Pegg, Wright and Frost in attendance so the environment was pretty conducive to having an awesome experience, but I definitely thought Hot Fuzz was the more enjoyable flick.  YMMV and all that rot, of course.

Buy a ticket. Support films you like. I guarantee Zombieland is the type of film whose crew will benefit from success, and maybe not so much from dismal box office returns.

Hey now, I like Snyder and his remake of George A. Romero's legitimate classic, but that doesn't mean I am blind!
Title: Re: Early consensus on Zombieland: :rock
Post by: The Fake Shemp on September 28, 2009, 08:02:46 PM
Not only is it possible, it's true! I'm glad you don't need allegory, but Romero exceeds with a far superior screenplay and more nuanced directing.

Shaun of the Dead is also better than Snyder's remake, and you can make the argument that Boyle's 28 Days Later is as well.

not really, zombie stories where human behavior is more dangerous than the zombies themselves are awesome, see for example The Walking Dead.

The original didn't have any moments as poignant as the scene with the death of the ginger girl's dad, or any moments as creatively awesome as the zombie pregnancy.

So I was reading The Stranger's review, and there's a surprise twist guest star in this film...

Quote
It's difficult to talk much more about the film without divulging the identity of its super-secret guest star, who walks in halfway through and evokes one of those cartoons where Daffy Duck would stop the action and browbeat his producers. Suffice it to say that the appearance transforms a sloppy, charmingly gooshy flick into one of the most unexpectedly entertaining movies in recent memory. Now let it die, already.

There's a good rip out?

unfortunately no, which seems to be a theme this year, the studios must have sent ninjas to kill all the people who leaked review copies last year

i watched the IMAGiNE cam release, which i think is the second good cam, dont judge me, i was drunk and couldnt help myself

the only things you couldnt really see was when it got dark, like the (not much of a spoiler but ill cover it up anyways):

Just got back from it.

Really, really fun movie. There is some absolutely great humor in it.

... but it is not a very coherent narrative, and you can definitely tell it started life as a television show. It feels almost like one of those backdoor miniseries that a network shoots in hopes that it draws enough to greenlight a series.

Bill Murray was incredible. :lol

"Do you have any regrets?" "Maybe Garfield." :rofl

Easily better than any other major studio film being peddled around as horror this month. Go see it!

Wait, what?

What are you questioning - my criticism that meanders at times or that it started life as a television show?

Two completely different levels of quality. Zombieland was fun, but it's nothing more than a gussied up B-movie. Just a very well done one.

The latter.  I definitely found the former criticism to be true, myself.

Yeah, it started as a television pilot and got canned before film ever rolled. But someone as Sony liked it enough that they attempted to resurrect it as a backdoor pilot/miniseries (like Battlestar Galactica or that Knight Rider pilot a couple of seasons ago), hoping that if it drew enough views that they could greenlight a series.

... but then, after much deliberation, they decided to just turn it into a movie. It still feels sort of like a backdoor pilot - like an expensive, two-hour long miniseries. It has television-style pacing near the end, and the whole thing feels like, "Tune in next week for the further adventures of Zombieland!"

I have seen some pretty awful B-movies, but rarely have I seen characters so incredulously stupid in straight-to-video schlock.  "Yeah, let's go stir up this giant, loud, bright amusement park....I'm sure that won't attract any zombies."  Even in a SciFi SyFy Channel movie, people do not so willfully bring about their own demise.

My friend complained that it doesn't make any sense for the country to still have electricity, but at the same time I doubt either of us knows exactly how long the power grind would last in such a situation.

None of that should really matter for a comedy, but it's still a little bit annoying.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on November 01, 2009, 03:34:36 AM
Eh, I think you're looking at it the wrong way. The film clearly establishes its own rules within the first few frames, and that type of logic falls within boundaries. When the primary motivation of one of your main characters is the search for Hostess Twinkies, I think you have to take the amusement park at face value.
Title: Re: Early consensus on Zombieland: :rock
Post by: border on November 01, 2009, 03:44:28 AM
I see what you're saying, but searching out Twinkies probably puts you less in harm's way than commandeering an amusement park.  The idea is that everyone wants a little slice of something to make life seem right and whole again, but nobody else wants something that so clearly amounts to a death wish.

Beyond that it's a very great, very funny movie that I easily liked more than Shaun of the Dead (which gets all weird and serious).  The varying logic problems only come up in conversation with friends because it's hard to really discuss a comedy without it becoming a "Wasn't it funny when...?" sort of thing.

I was willing to overlook that segment of the movie (I rolled my eyes already knowing what would happen). Although, thinking about it, it did set the stage for Woody Harrelson being even more awesome and in that sense, I actually forgive it.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on November 01, 2009, 03:58:58 AM
Yeah, anything that serves as an excuse for Woody Harrelson to harness a spinning ride and fire a submachine gun into a mob of zombies is a-okay in my book.

The only other annoying thing about the movie came up with my same friend:

"If the zombies won't bother you if you are dressed like a zombie, why don't they all start dressing like zombies?"

"Because they learned that some other asshole might shoot you if you look like a zombie."

"Well if these characters are so damned smart, why did Bill Murray try to sneak up on an armed dude when the first time he did something like that he got whacked with a golf club?"

".......Ehhhh, it's just a comedy."

I'm buying the whole package. It's going to be displayed on a shelf. It's the same reason I bought the UK Battlestar release over the US one. If the UK has been more expensive I still would have opted for it because of the packaging.

Personally, I just put all my movies or games in a big ass disk folder/binder thing.  I'd never give a shite about box art since I just throw all the boxes in a cupboard somewhere and I never even look at them.

BTW what was the big deal about this movie?  It was fun, but it wasn't the movie of the decade or anything.  It had way too many gimmicks to be that memorable and all the nerdiness trbutes just got kitschy by the time bill murray ate buckshot.  Both superbad and shaun of the dead were better movies imo.

Yeah, you're right. I should just give up hope that you'd use words that exist. Words from any single language, in happy marriage, a harmonious, contiguous sentence.

Anyway:
All of the hype for this movie built me up a little too much. I was ready to love it, but I thought it was only OK. Superbad-meets-Shaun-of-the-Dead is pretty much spot-on, esp. since Superbad is another movie about which I was a little too hopeful and turned out to be merely OK.

This type of lead character, these neutered, post-ironic hipster, corduroy-wearing twigs, they are some kind of offshoot of the Harry Potter "make the losers and geeks in your audience comfortable by showing that they'll win" school of thinking.

The beginning of the movie was badass. The opening credits were fucking fantastic, the Rules of Survival and accompanying montage of the fall of civilization were perfect. So as the movie begins by setting up its own level of realism, it ever more indifferently ignores those rules as it progresses. The Tallahassee moment later in the film was... difficult; they'd set the man up to be a cartoon character, and provided lots of support for that, then they give him an actual moment of pathos. Then right back to Savage Steve Holland levels of comicbook laffs and violence. Gah, I'm arguing realism in a movie about zombies. A comedy about zombies. There is not a :smh large enough for me right now.

All I can offer is that I own the special edition of Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and even Resident Evil (!!!) but this one won't make it into my collection.
Title: Re: Early consensus on Zombieland: :rock
Post by: brawndolicious on December 11, 2009, 05:35:02 AM
It started to fall off when they started circle-jerking over bill murray.  The beginning of the movie was all action, one-liners, and cleavage (from what I remember).  Then they started mixing in some stereotypical "sympathetic" storylines (ahh he was crying over his baby) like halfway through and it honestly felt like the second half was written by a fucking studio robot.  It was obviously designed, as you say, to appeal to "post-ironic hipster twigs".  And so it was half-good, half-suck, not worth rewatching overall.

Yeah, honestly my reaction was to break out Shaun and think about a re-watch. As it is, I tried to play Condemned in a dark and empty house and freaked myself the fuck out.
