In a TV show in 2005 he was voted greatest belgian of all time.
He won recognition for his ministry to people with leprosy (also known as Hansen's Disease), who had been placed under a government-sanctioned medical quarantine on the island of Molokai in the Kingdom of Hawaii.[2] He eventually contracted and died of the disease, and is widely considered a "martyr of charity".

Really thats the greatest Belgian?
Dissapointed? The work he did on Molokai is incredible and inspiring, he was a remarkable person. To his own death, he took care and stood by people who were outcasts of society and literally deported to an island so they could be forgotten.
Second place was to the scientist Paul Janssen who (with his company) discovered more than 80 medicines, 4 on the WHO essential list (a record)
1,Father Damien (1840-1889)
2,Paul Janssen (1926-2003)
3,Eddy Merckx (1945-)
4,Ambiorix (1st century BC)
5,Adolf Daens (1839-1907)
6,Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564)
7,Jacques Brel (1929-1978)
8,Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594)
9,Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)
10,Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883)

Just thought it would be some scientist or statesman. This seems like good guy though :)
Belgian statesmen aren't remarkable people, how do you think we got such a fucked up federal state?
