there seems to be conflicting info about this out there. My ps3 has always been kinda loud. Not 360 loud, but audible. I bought it used at gamestop because it's BC (80gb, pretty sure it's from the MGS4 bundle 'cause it came with a DS3.)
I know they start out silent, then get this way. am I screwed? circle one y / n

This is not the 360, you're PS3 won't die.
-
My PS3 fan goes loud from time to time and it has never had any problems. I mean sometimes it goes from whisper quiet to 360 dashboard levels of loud.
-
mine died after the fans got moderately loud
-
open it up and dust it out with some canned air, see if that helps
if mine dies, fuck it - i'll sell off the few games and blu rays i have and call it a day
it's a 60GB BC unit, and i'm pretty sure at this point they won't repair or replace those

Mine is loud too. It's a launch 60 gb unit. I bought it refurbished. I originally put it in my entertainment center. Bad idea because it did not have room to breathe and began to overheat. Since moving it out in the open and sitting it vertically I haven't had a single problem out of mine.

I have an older (not launch) 60 as well. It gets pretty loud when playing PS2 games, but seems to be fine.
*knock on wood*

it's out in the open. sounds like it's normal.
-
haha, I just realized the thread title works both ways.

If your PS3 is having problems with heat and loud fans, just unscrew the cover and leave it open.
