Not a huge fan (a bit too small), but around what I expected from a DL game.

Quote
Konami has announced that classic platformer Rocket Knight Adventures is to make a comeback.

Sparkster will return in a 2.5D platformer for XBLA, PSN and Steam. As reported by 1UP, it's being developed by Climax and is due for a release in 2010.

The game will be set 15 years after the last RKA game, which was made in 1994. Sparkster's gear will be better than ever - his rocket pack will let him zoom around finding hidden areas, for example. He can pull off melee attacks with his sword, and also fire energy balls and beams. Now he can deflect missiles back towards enemies, too.

There are various paths through levels to choose from and a fair few side-scrolling shooter sections. Arcade mode is designed to appeal to hardcore fans who want a real challenge, as you won't be able to save your game. There will be Achievements and leaderboards too. Free Play mode is designed to be more accessible and lets you save your progress and skip between levels.

Sure it's a bit iffy, but should be hard to totally screw up! HYPE :hyper

I don't like the visuals. I'll remain optimistic. I love Rocket Knight Adventures and Sparkster.

I busted out the nomad a little while ago. It makes me a bit wary of how zoomed out the camera is, but I guess it can always be dynamic. Hopefullt the 'enhanced' rocket powers are handled well.

I realize these shots are from a single level, but I don't like the look at all. Somebody got their Donkey Kong Country in my Rocket Knight. It looks like just another misguided revival, and the choice of developer doesn't help matters.

Also, Warren Spector has made a good game.

He's also made a pretty bad one, and it was bad for very Wii reasons.

Why is everyone reviving old franchises that have been dead for GENERATIONS?

 ???

I mean, Earthworm Jim I can understand. But Rocket Knight and Daytona? This is like, asking for a pony for Christmas and actually getting one, considering how long the fans of these games have gone without new entries. This is especially really awesome to me because Rocket Knight adventures is what I consider the gold standard for action platformers and Daytona the gold standard for racing games. So it's like winning the lotto...or something. I wouldn't know because I've never bought a lottery ticket.

And to clarify, IW was bad for very "console" reasons, you've just narrowed it to fit your vendetta.

True. But the argument is, remarkably, still spot on.

I was saying it wasn't appropriate to judge Epic Mickey without even seeing a single screenshot.  Also, Warren Spector has made a good game.

Here, we have screenshots, and they look like shit, and hey, let's look at every platformer Climax UK has made:

Lilo & Stitch 2: Hamsterviel Havoc
Lizzie McGuire 3: Homecoming Havoc
Disney's The Wild
W.I.T.C.H.

Have you played those games?  I have.  They are fucking awful.  There is no reason to expect Climax can make a competent 2D platformer.

the screens will look awful. defending epic mickey is worse than defending lilo and stitch 2: hamstervial havoc.

climax alone gives me little hope, but the 1up writeup gave me a bit. DON'T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME

I think it looks pretty crappy in terms of presentation, but if it plays similar I'll be happy.

Climax UK?  As in the guys who took the piece of shit Silent Hill psp that Climax USA had made and turned it into an excellent game?  I realize the bulk of that team is working on Silent Hill Wii, but still, Climax UK is not :lol worthy.

good point.

But hey, I was able to delude myself hard enough that I thought NiGHTS 2 was a decent game, if you guys wish hard enough, you can probably do the same here.

It took me quite a while to admit to myself that Haze was looking shit, so this is probably doable.

Why is everyone reviving old franchises that have been dead for GENERATIONS?

Says the guy who replays FFVIII on an annual basis.

You're damn straight. But what does that have to do with anything? I'm not saying it's BAD, I'm just CURIOUS. It strikes me as odd, because these franchises have been neglected for so long, that at this point they probably don't even have much of a fanbase.

So why now?

They're probably cheap to make and with digital download services becoming popular the risk isn't as high.

Don't know about Boy and his Blob, but that's a retail game, and it has pretty incredible 2D animation.  And I guess Punch Out, but that was more insurance that if/when Nintendo does fail, they want the core audience to know they've always looked out for them.

and the RKA was great (didn't even know there was a sequel; need to check that out) but this looks kinda bad.

A good 60% of NiGHTs 2 is very enjoyable!
Title: Re: 2010 gets better and better (new Rocket Knight!)
Post by: Cravis on October 07, 2009, 12:03:48 PM
Euuuuuurrrghhh kinda.  Silent Hill Origins was started by Climax LA and finished by one of the UK Studios (Solent I think).  Silent Hill Wii is by this branch of the tree, though.

Ah. I remember there was some difficulty in it's development where it got finished by a separate team. I didn't know if this was the one who started or finished it

A good 60% of NiGHTs 2 is very enjoyable!
.
I agree but that's coming from someone who never played the original. I couldn't stand the wii mote controls so I played it with the Wavebird. I hated the unskippable cut scenes and really couldn't stand when you played as the children. It was amazing when you flew through the rings. The pinball stage was a great concept marred by a terrible camera.

It's one of those cases where there's a great game buried within the confines of a mediocre one.

Title: Re: 2010 gets better and better (new Rocket Knight!)
Post by: Cravis on October 07, 2009, 12:30:47 PM
I enjoyed Origins. It was short but you didn't feel as helpless. I know that's a big part of the earlier Silent Hills but I found being helpless bordered on being frustrating.

Konami needs to bring back Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Four player online would be godly in that. Although I'm not sure who holds the license. I remember Lucasarts developed it and Konami published it. Another one of their joint ventures, Metal Warriors, is in need of a 2D remake on XBLA and PSN.

wtf, it was a good SH game.  Sure it's weaker than 1-4 story-wise, but it was Silent Hill through and through from the puzzles to the atmosphere to the story presentation.  SH5 otoh....smh

This doesn't look like Rocket Knight Adventures. But I'll bite as it is the BEST ACTION PLATFORMER EVER.
Title: Re: 2010 gets better and better (new Rocket Knight!)
Post by: Himu on April 10, 2010, 02:52:20 PM
I think the base problem here is the speed. RKA is an action platformer emphasizing a perfect balance between action and platforming.

So the action is quick. In contrast, this game is fucking slow as molasses.

I guess the shooter stage KINDA looks like the shooting stage in RKA, but it looks completely boring.

Let's compare:

Will probably be a decent game, but it's like they completely forgot the appeal of RKA, which is fast-paced action and platforming melded together to form one delicious package. Maybe the later levels are more upbeat?

"we want to make it accessable to gamers of all skill levels."  in other words, the game'll be piss easy.  ugh i could beat these old platformers back when i was like eight; why do they always act like kids nowadays need absolutely no challenge?

Yeah, I don't get that either. Games like Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and the original Rocket Knight games were all fairly tough, but it's not like kids back then were struggling to make it past the first level or anything.

Isn't it by Climax UK whose latest two games were Silent Hill Shattered Memories & Silent Hill Origins?
Those were good games, I'd rather have them developing this than just another generic XBLA/PSN developer.
