Title: Halloween Week: Your favorite horror movies + general horror movie discussion
Post by: Joe Molotov on October 24, 2009, 04:34:10 PM
For me, it's The Omen. Great acting from Gregory Peck and David Warner (and even the kid is pretty good), a solid plot with nice brisk pacing, and great score from Jerry Goldsmith. Great movie. I try to watch it every year around Halloween. I haven't watched it yet this year, but I picked it up on Blu-Ray this week. :rock

Depends on the mood. I'll either throw on Evil Dead 2 or Halloween.

The Omen is pretty awesome too. And I just bought An American Werewolf in London on Blu-ray last month.

part of my fondness for An American Werewolf in London is that i saw it in the theater with my dad

i'll concede there are better horror movies out there, but that's my favorite

The Thing

Doesn't get much better than a group of men battling an alien menace that can take on the form of whatever it comes into contact with in the middle of an Antarctic snowstorm.

I love The Thing and Evil Dead 2, but just to be different, I'll throw Dead/Alive (also known as Braindead) into the mix.

It's tough. I love Jacob's Ladder, Nightmare on Elm Street, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead and Halloween the most though.

Any channels showing horror marathons now?

Yeah, what gives?  AMC usually has a ballin' Halloween marathon going on.

My favorite is probably Suspiria.

The Thing, followed by Alien.

AMC dumped Monsterfest a couple of years ago, now they've got something called Fearfest. It's usually horror, but it lets them include science-fiction, thrillers, etc.

Not nearly as cool, in my opinion.

It kicked off last night with Alien and Aliens. This is their lineup the next 9 days:

The Return of the Living Dead
Jack the Ripper
The Brain Eaters
The Fly (1958)
Dracula
Exorcist: The Beginning
Alien
Aliens
Alien 3
Alien Resurrection
Wolf
The Beast Must Die
The Frighteners
Raising Cain
The Shining
Psycho (1998)
The Innocents
The Fly II
Thir13en Ghosts
Halloween (1978)
Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster
King Kong (1976)
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
And Now the Screaming Starts!
Puppetmaster
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Return to House on Haunted Hill
Exorcist: The Beginning
Blood of Dracula
The She-Creature
Sabretooth
Piñata: Survival Island
End of Days
Young Frankenstein
The Amityville Horror (1979)

And for the finale, AMC will be showing a high definition, completely digitally restored version of the original Night of the Living Dead three hours in a row on Halloween. Best part, easily.

The scariest horror movies for me were the ones I saw as a kid and don't remember anymore.  So I don't know how accurate it is but stuff like The Blob, Critters, Psycho, Nightmare on Elm Street, Candyman were scary as shit.

In terms of a more recent movie I can actually remember, it's corny, but I'd have to go with the blair witch project the first time I saw it posted somewhere before the theater release and watched it and I thought it was real.  That was creepy!  The last 10 mins of [Rec] was great too.

If a horror movie doesn't have to be scary, I'd probably say The Frighteners or Army of Darkness.  Ghostbusters if that counts!

Not a big horror movie fan, though I thought Saw 1 was pretty novel for its time, even though it's now been milked to death with so many shitty sequels. I'd say Psycho is probably my favorite.

I've always had a soft spot for Angel Heart.  Not the scariest movie by any means but it's definitely one of the better overlooked horror films out there, imo.  I never know why it's not played more often on tv around this time of year.

Angel Heart is probably too cerebral for most. It's not the kind of flick you can catch midway through cable and follow, if you catch my drift.

AMC is not playing David Cronenberg's The Fly this year. That, as well as Dawn of the Dead, usually comes down to licensing issues. I know that Romero's stuff in particular has seen a lot of legal bickering, but I'm pleasantly surprised to see AMC invest in something that's public domain (the original Night of the Living Dead).

I would also classify Alien as a horror film, but Aliens and all of the sequels venture deep into science-fiction territory where the only horrifying thing is the possibility of yet another sequel.

Yeah, Romero's production company or distributor really screwed the pooch, and it slipped into public domain awhile ago. This is the first time in recent memory that someone has legitimately tried to restore it, though.

In all honesty though, would you really watch Dawn of the Dead on AMC?  Part of the fun of watching it is for Tom Savini's effects.  I still cringe a little bit when I see people getting eaten.  In b4 cultural satire of materialism blah blah.

My favorite's still Halloween, but I'm also pretty fond of Wes Craven's original Last House on the Left (thanks Willco).

Probably the best version of NotLD on home video so far is Elite's Laserdisc version, which they later ported to DVD. I have the DVD and it's pretty nice.

House is still a lot fun to this day. The scene where the sexy neighbor goes under the table to pick up a fallen shotgun shell used to scare me shitless when I was a kid.

Little House tidbit: The Horror Show was originally House 3, which is why it went straight from House 2 to 4. It still has the House III moniker in some areas. I guess it changed the name due to the film being closer to Shocker than a haunted house film.

Instead of making a new thread, I think I'll just re-purpose this one.

I finally got around to watching Dario Agento's Mother of Tears, and man, that was one stanky stinkburger of a movie. :yuck The only redeeming value was a couple of instances of shocking violence, but there was no sense of dread like you got from watching Suspiria. It was just campy OMG violence, and it wasn't helped by the acting which was strictly Sci-Fi channel original level (why, oh why did you cast your daughter, she's awful!) Udo Kier was the only competent actor, and he was only in it for like 2 minutes. Just painful to watch.

Mother of Tears really was terrible. Probably one of the worst from Argento. I've pretty much given up on him now. I don't think I've enjoyed anything of his since Opera... well maybe Pelts, but just for the insane gorefactor and Meatloaf tearing off his skin.

I watched The Abominable Dr. Phibes + Dr. Phibes Rises Again.

The first one's like a proto-SE7EN, with the awesomeness of Vincent Price as the anti-hero. Even the closing credits list him as The Protagonist, even though he's the killer. :lol The second one is just as awesome, but it lacks some of the focus of the first one since he's just killing everyone that gets in his way instead of following a set plan for revenge like in the first one.

Going to watch Jacobs Ladder for the first time ever tonight, after people that liked Angel Heart said it was good too.

Hope it's good :rock

A lot of imagery from the Silent Hill series was lifted straight from Jacob's Ladder so I don't know if it'll make as much as an impact as it did nearly 20 years ago but it's still a pretty damn good film.

"20 years ago"? Christ. Old user feels old.

I watched the Jacob's Ladder preview prior to Flatliners on its opening night. The trailer was so freaky, it actually made Flatliners scarier just from its fear half-life. I was about 1/3 through Flatliners before I realized it was utter tripe. Jacob's Ladder has some excellent philosophy in there as well, with all the unsettling bits. Very good film.

Halloween II was quite alright.  The tension and camera work was really good even if not up to the original.  I liked how the main character was all messed up on drugs and had to find safety to take rest breaks.  In fact, coupled with the final fight of sound effects distractions, it almost felt like an RE game, lol.

I think it is second only to Dawn of the Dead in terms of all-time great horror sequels. It's pretty bold for a horror sequel - it takes risks. It is not total retread of the original, the setting is different, etc. The concept that is really the second part of a two-part film is really cool.

It's fun reading reviews from the early 80s when it came out talking about how shocking and gore-filled the movie is and how it's trying to top all the other slasher films with the most vicious messed up on screen shocking violence.

...when today it's like ...pg-13 tame.  ^^;  It's interesting seeing how used to gore we are these days.  Like Trick 'r Treat was fairly gory, but I'd say it's fine for 14-16 year olds to go see.
Title: Re: Halloween Week: Your favorite horror movies + general horror movie discussio
Post by: The Fake Shemp on November 02, 2009, 02:01:58 AM
Even still - there really wasn't much in the way of gore in Trick 'r Treat. The "goriest" scene was actually fake, within the context of the film.

... It is pretty funny to read that stuff about older films, though. Even Halloween itself is remembered as shocking and violent, where there's very little on screen violence. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre conjures up images of Leatherface hacking away at body parts with a chainsaw, despite the violence being pretty tame in comparison.

Btw, what's your take on why it didn't get a theater release back when it was finished?  I searched around and the only rumor that sounded plausible was that WB had cold feet because

most of the characters who get killed are young children

Internal studio politics. I'm sure that played a part in it, but how big, I don't know. The film didn't cost very much, nor is it more graphic than stuff like Hostel. I get the feeling there was an internal discussion were not privy to, and that jeopardized the film's chances of a theatrical release.

We watched The Strangers the other night even though I knew it wasn't supposed to be very good but we were in the mood for a horror film and the trailer made it look decent enough, so I thought what the hell?

Total crap.  I swear the script must've been about 5 pages long.  The best part of the movie was when the girl knocked on the front door of the house looking for "Theresa" or whomever, after that it just became a warmed over Michael Myers family reunion.

Funny Games is a much better home invasion film.  And no silly masks in that one.

I thought the best part was when Dennis from It's Always Sunny in Philly shows up...

I like it the first time I saw it - when it was called The Blair Witch Project. Pass.

And actually, I didn't like it.

Everyone go see Ti West's The House of the Devil instead. That movie was pretty awesome. :rock
