Wow, it's amazing how much basketball has completely fallen off my radar...I didn't even know the Sonics moved to OKC. I guess they didn't make to many highlight reels I'd catch in passing. This is coming from a guy that it used to be my favorite sport and the Sonics were my favorite team.

Ya, but when you get that close to the promise land that many times and fail, it drives people crazy. They are like the Bills of the 90's.

Mavs might not make the playoffs

Maybe, but that would require two of the Suns/Thunder/Clippers/Rockets/Warriors finishing above them.  Hard to see that happening if the Mavs are healthy.

Nice condition. They're an old team and very likely to experience some injuries. And Josh Howard is never healthy.

But they're making the playoffs. Nowitizki is still near his prime and he's surrounded by a reasonable amount of talent.

Shaq being old and washed up, LeBron bricking jumpshots and chucking up desperation 3s at the 2 minute mark, and Mike Brown sucking dick at coaching as usual (at one point he had Shaq and Ilgauskas on the court at the same fucking time :lol). I think Bosh out-rebounded the entire team, too.

Why does everyone on the internet refer to their team of choice as "we"? Is it just ex-high-school-jock-vicariously-living-out-his-childhood-dream syndrome, or what? I've noticed this on GAF and /sp/, and I'm not sure if I just never picked up on it in real life conversations or what, but ho-lee CHRIST is it annoying

Nothing wrong with it, if it's your team. The Lions are my team in the NFL ( :'(), but I've disliked the Pistons since Joe Dumars refused to give me an autograph, like when I was 12 or something  :lol

So I don't really have an NBA team. I'm more of a fan of different players - Shaq, Kobe, Wade mainly

Some stuff on Donnehy's book came out and wow, its no wonder the NBA is so complete ass nowadays:

The 2002 Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings presents a stunning example of game and series manipulation at its ugliest. As the teams prepared for Game 6 at the Staples Center, Sacramento had a 3–2 lead in the series. The referees assigned to work Game 6 were Dick Bavetta, Bob Delaney, and Ted Bernhardt. As soon as the referees for the game were chosen, the rest of us knew immediately that there would be a Game 7. A prolonged series was good for the league, good for the networks, and good for the game. Oh, and one more thing: it was great for the big-market, star-studded Los Angeles Lakers.

In the pregame meeting prior to Game 6, the league office sent down word that certain calls — calls that would have benefitted the Lakers — were being missed by the referees. This was the type of not-so-subtle information that I and other referees were left to interpret. After receiving the dispatch, Bavetta openly talked about the fact that the league wanted a Game 7.

"If we give the benefit of the calls to the team that's down in the series, nobody's going to complain. The series will be even at three apiece, and then the better team can win Game 7," Bavetta stated.

As history shows, Sacramento lost Game 6 in a wild come-from-behind thriller that saw the Lakers repeatedly sent to the foul line by the referees. For other NBA referees watching the game on television, it was a shameful performance by Bavetta's crew, one of the most poorly officiated games of all time.

We had another variation of this gag simply referred to as the "first foul of the game" bet. While still in the locker room before tip-off, we would make a wager on which of us would call the game's first foul. That referee would either have to pay the ball boy or pick up the dinner tab for the other two referees. Sometimes, the ante would be $50 a guy. Like the technical foul bet, it was hilarious — only this time we were testing each other's nerves to see who had the guts to hold out the longest before calling a personal foul. There were occasions when we would hold back for two or three minutes — an eternity in an NBA game — before blowing the whistle. It didn't matter if bodies were flying all over the place; no fouls were called because no one wanted to lose the bet.

We played this little game during the regular season and summer league. After a game, all three refs would gather around the VCR and watch a replay of the game. Early in the contest, the announcers would say, "Holy cow! They're really letting them play tonight!" If they only knew...

During one particular summer game, Duke Callahan, Mark Wunderlich, and I made it to the three-minute mark in the first quarter without calling a foul. We were running up and down the court, laughing our asses off as the players got hammered with no whistles. The players were exhausted from the nonstop running when Callahan finally called the first foul because Mikki Moore of the New Jersey Nets literally tackled an opposing player right in front of him. Too bad for Callahan — he lost the bet.

I became so good at this game that if an obvious foul was committed right in front of me, I would call a travel or a three-second violation instead. Those violations are not personal fouls, so I was still in the running to win the bet. The players would look at me with disbelief on their faces as if to say, "What the hell was that?"

A TON more here. Wow.  :lol

They should just move the Clippers back to San Diego. Either that or just have them be pre-game entertainment at Lakers games. Kinda like a special olympics version of the globetrotters.

Mavs trailed Utah 67-52 going into the 4th quarter tonight.

They won by 11, 96-85.

26 point swing in one quarter. Most NBA teams struggle to score 26 in one quarter.

edit: the recap isn't up on ESPN yet, but my quick reading of the play-by-play says Nowitzki scored 29 points in the quarter himself. :o

J.J. Redick Alert

Through 4 games, Redick is averaging 15.8 PPG in 34.0 MPG, hitting 52.4% of three point attempts. He has scored in double figures all 4 games, including a 27 point night on Sunday.

Adam Morrison has scored 0 points in 3 minutes played, appearing in only one game.

Dirk was the first player since Shaq in 2001 to go 40/10/5/5.

Dirk's 29 points in the fourth was two shy of Wilt's fourth quarter record of 31. This is the closest Dirk will come to one of Wilt's records, especially his record for most women boned. Dirk does, however, have him beat in cheeseburgers.

Looks like the Steve Nash MVP campaign has started.  ::)

Yes, the Suns are 7-1, but only two of those wins were against winning teams.
And I don't expect Jason Richardson to hit 60% of his threes or Grant Hill to average nearly 9 boards for the rest of the season.
The team is a mirage.

Honestly I don't have a team inthe NBA. Usually my loyalty goes wherever my favorite player (Shaq) goes. I was a Magic fan, then Lakers, then Heat. But I don't feel like jumping to the Cavs. Never liked the team, and while I think LeBron is an amazing player I can't say I'm a fan

I looked and couldn't find anything. They were basically saying it's clear to anyone that his capabilities are declining steeply, and that it was especially strange New York was interested because they have so many young prospects that he'd be taking minutes away from due to his refusal to play an ancillary role. One of them also pointed out that it was ironic one of Memphis' motivations for picking him up was to bolster ticket sales at home, and he ended up never playing a home game :lol I guess they were just stating the obvious, but it was still funny that they were so brusque about it. There were a couple Ether-esque potshots in there

I think they also did a segment on him a week or two back titled something like, "Maybe it's time to retire when..." before the news even broke that New York was looking at him.

He paid for his own arena rather than soaking the taxpayers, and re-committed to the city when it was still a big clusterfuck.  Very loyal to the community.

Also, when Arenas and Jamison made the all-star team he rewarded them with cake.  What's not to like?

Nets Announce Team is In Re-Demolition Mode

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—In a continuing effort to destroy their roster and ultimately cause their team's collapse, Nets officials announced Monday that the franchise was entrenched in a long-term re-demolition process. "Obviously, we're not going to just fall apart overnight, but our 0-10 start is proof that we're imploding in the right direction," said general manager Kiki Vandeweghe. "We've been working for years to demolish the core of the Nets roster by getting rid of Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson, and Vince Carter. And with the acquisition of Yi Jianlian from China, a player who is sure to be a bust, this organization has begun to really focus on tearing itself down from the ground up." Vandeweghe said he is following the re-demolition model established by the New York Knicks and praised the ongoing team-destruction efforts of owner Jim Dolan, who he said is "doing a great job over there."

He gets a lot of credit. He was always loyal to the community, and even when both teams have been competitive in the past decade, both the Capitals and the Wizards have remained pretty affordable tickets for fans. And the MCI Center is one of the few urban renewal projects that has legitimately panned out.

That 0-17 should have been Frank's. They return home to play the Mavericks in their next game, which means they have a good look at 0-18, which would be a new record. Let the dude lose as many games as he can. After they break the streak and there's nothing left to play for, then can the guy. But they should have first let him have his shot at history.

Durant is obviously the better player and in all likelihood will have a far better career. BUT the 29 other GMs in the league would have done the same thing, right or wrong. The Durant vs Oden thing was entirely a media concoction. No-one would have taken Jordan over Hakeem either.

It really is impressive how much of a turnaround OKC has done since last season. A year ago, they started 2-24, but this year they're already 12-9 and could manage to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card. And only one of their starters has been in the league for more than three seasons!

Now if only a local station would start airing their games. :-\

Quote from: WaPost
“Former Wizards coach Eddie Jordan and his staff privately intimated they felt undermined by Grunfeld when it came to matters of discipline with Arenas. Arenas, a notorious practical joker, often crossed the line of acceptable decorum. The example often cited was how Arenas once defecated in teammate Andray Blatche’s shoe during Blatche’s rookie season. His behavior often went unchecked and unpunished, said a former team employee on condition of anonymity.”

I have the International version, which is gimped even worse. Good enough for watching full-screen on a PC monitor but they have a fucking cheek calling it HD. 16:9, yes, but nowhere near HD. Still, it's a ridiculous amount of content and a lot better than my previous method: dl'ing torrents 2 or 3 days after the game, by which time I invariably had read the write-up on ESPN.

Berri's "Wins Produced" stat does not pass the sniff test. According to their mid-season report, Marcus Camby leads all players in wins produced per 48 minutes. Kevin Love is second. The top shooting guard is Mike Miller. Lamar Odom produces about twice as many wins per 48 minutes as Kobe.

The stat overvalues defensive rebounds and undervalues scoring and the ability to create shots.

The Cavs have incredible depth this year. As long as they stay healthy they should coast to the Finals. The Magic miss Courtney Lee big time and Dwight Howard just isn't enough to dominate a game.

I'd agree that they're the best Cavs team in recent years, and that they should get to the Finals. But incredible depth? Take LeBron off that squad and tell me how many wins they have in the East. Then take the best player off the Lakers, Celtics, Magic, Nuggets, Blazers and tell me how many wins they all have. I really don't see much big-time talent on the Cavs after LBJ. I mean, Hickson is starting and he's hopelessly lost most of the time. Williams is far too one-dimensional to be a 2nd guy. Shaq is rounding into shape, but he's never going to be able to provide quality starters minutes at this point. He's very effective over short stretches but he's not going to be someone they can go to all game.

Actually, the kind of trade the Mavs and Wizards just pulled off probably wouldn't happen much if there was a hard cap. No team would have the necessary space to take on added salary (the Mavs are way over the soft cap figure).

Exactly. Plus a lot of teams would be completely fucked every year if they couldn't use something like the midlevel exception to fill an immediate need. And does anyone really want a league where teams can't go over the cap to re-sign their own stars?

I suppose any hard cap could have a hardship exception.

And does anyone really want a league where teams can't go over the cap to re-sign their own stars?
Hasn't stopped NHL teams from keeping their star players: Pittsburgh has kept Crosby and Malkin; Vancouver has kept the Sedins; Detroit has kept Datsyuk and Zetterberg; Washington has kept Ovechkin. Teams just need to plan better.

So this is why the Cavs' management tried to hide Z's becoming the Cavs' lifetime scoring champ recently, and why he was so pissed about it. Very nice pick-up for them, no doubt. Hickson was a dime-a-dozen player and Z was obviously on his way out.

Z could be released and be back in Cavs uniform in 30 days. :rock How sick is that?

It's so weird to be a fan for a (Cleveland) team that is being benefited by a huge imbalance in the financials of the game. We have received Shaq, Mo Williams and Twan for: Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavolivic, 2nd round pick, Damon Jones, Joe Smith and a first round pick (once Z comes back). That's crazy.

This is worse than the Pau to L.A. trade.

Well Jamison isn't worth nearly as much as Pau was worth two years ago, if only because Jamison is nearly 34 and Gasol was 27. Jamison is a rental, while Gasol was a building block. We don't even have to discuss the massive gap in play-making and defense between the two players.

At least Memphis got a great center in Marc Gasol when they made that trade.

Hindsight Bias FTW. When the trade was made, Marc Gasol was not considered to be a good center, let alone a great one. He was originally a late second-round draft pick, who most scouts believed was too slow to be a starting NBA center.

Washington also got a European prospect who was drafted in the second round. Will he pan out? Like most second-rounders, he probably won't.
Title: Re: NBA thread of Greg Oden's short season, but long penis
Post by: Mandark on February 18, 2010, 12:07:42 AM
Malek said everything I was going to.  Jamison's still a very good player, but he's old and one of the worst defenders in the league.  At the time of the LA/Memphis trade, Marc Gasol was on track to be a frontcourt Brent Price.
Title: Re: NBA thread of Greg Oden's short season, but long penis
Post by: ToxicAdam on February 18, 2010, 12:12:29 AM
I wish Jamison was only a rental. The Cavs will have that contract for a few more years.

That's the only real downside to the trade.
Title: Re: NBA thread of Greg Oden's short season, but long penis
Post by: Mandark on February 18, 2010, 12:16:30 AM
Jamison's got two years after this.  In the NBA that means one year, after which he becomes trade bait as an expiring.

That might all be out the window depending on what CBA Stern forces the players to accept.

Post by: Cormacaroni on February 18, 2010, 12:57:38 AM
I cannot believe some of these trade ideas. The proposed Tyrus Thomas trade was one of the weirdest I've ever seen. 6 players and about $40 million in contracts were involved, with the net result being that one team saves $2.7 million and gets under the luxury tax ceiling. There was no consideration of making either team better whatsoever. Clearly, none of us are giving these guys enough money because they're all so poor!

I think the consensus is that they'll need to get two guys, yeah. My interest in the NBA has pretty much whittled down to nothing at this point due the Knicks total ineptitude, but I'm sure I'd jump back on the bandwagon if they got LeBron. Wouldn't even need to get anyone else to get me to watch.

Much as I'd love to see LeBron and Wade on the Knicks (it could do a lot to restore the NBA's profile, if nothing else), I bet they end up being stuck with lukewarm options like signing Boozer and trading for Arenas or something. They absolutely have to try to get those two though, as should every team with an inkling of cap space and ambition.

It would take a couple of years to accumulate role players, sure, but it could be done. Draft picks are useless to guys like that - Wade's prime is RIGHT NOW. But there is the mid-level exception, cheap mid-season veteran pick-ups, and the prospect of the entire free agent market being generally depressed. Who'd have thought a player like AI would be available so cheap? Role players can always be found if a ring is a serious prospect.

Even if they don't, a LeBron-Wade led 40 win team would still be the most terrifying and entertaining first round playoff matchup of all time.

The Mavs didn't throw him under the bus; he's been injured. But when he comes back, he won't see a lot of playing time. Haywood has been very impressive. What a lopsided trade.

In related news:

Quote
Dirk Nowitzki garned the Western Conference's Player for the Week award.

It's his second of the year and 12th of his career.

Nowitzki led the Mavericks (39-21 overall) to wins against Indiana, L.A. Lakers, Atlanta and New Orleans. The 7-footer averaged a league-best 31.8 points (.548 FG, .667 3FG, .971 FT), including 12.0 points in the fourth quarter, to go with 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists. He made 33 of his 34 attempts from the free throw line and saw a streak of 41 consecutive makes snapped in the third quarter of Sunday's New Orleans game.

I almost feel like the Mavs have a chance against the Lakers.
