Title: Money for grades
Post by: Bocsius on November 11, 2009, 09:08:03 AM
I've heard of parents giving their kids money for each A on their report cards, and now schools apparently want in on the action.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. – A middle school in North Carolina is selling test scores to students in a bid to raise money.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that a parent advisory council at Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro come up with the fundraising plan after last year's chocolate sale flopped.

The school will sell 20 test points to students for $20.

Students can add 10 extra points to each of two tests of their choice. The extra points could take a student from a "B" to an "A" on those tests or from a failing grade to a passing grade.

Principal Susie Shepherd says it's not enough of an impact to change a student's overall grades.

Officials at the state Department of Public Instruction say exchanging grades for money teaches children the wrong lessons.

This is so dumb.  It kind of shoots No Child Left Behind in the foot.

"Well Johnny, looks like you're failing another test...  We may have to hold you back a year."
"Here's $20.  Buy yourself something pretty."
"Lookie there Johnny, you pass!"

The kids fail history, science, spelling, math, reading...  but hey, at least they learn economics!

If you have a vehicle getting less than 18 MPG, you can trade it in for a higher grade and a bicycle.

Derivatives and limits, I have a 51/70 in total, still have a shot of passing with a D if I do decent at the final in a couple of weeks.

This is kinda cool.  If I had kids, I'd make them work for the money to buy their education.  Build strong work ethic at an early age, then deal with the education thing later.
