Title: The College Basketball Thread brought to you by UK's #1 Recruiting Class
Post by: Bloodwake on November 13, 2009, 11:42:21 AM
Kentucky tips off tonight, more awesome should follow in the next few months. I'm anxious to actually get excited about my team actually playing like they traditionally do: well.

Duke has no guards, one of their prized recruits broke his wrist in practice and is out indefinitely, and Carolina is down the road reloading as usual.

But at least they're not filthy cheating scum like the crew now residing in Lexington.

Hoping to hear good news from Barnes this afternoon.

As for the rest of this, wake me up in Jan when conference matchups start in earnest.

Another season, another chance to watch Duke run into athletically superior teams that bounce them in the second or third round of the tournament

Why is MSU #2 and U of M #15 though. Both seem overrated

Duke has a PG this year and one of the best coming next year.  As long as these guys don't 'Paulus' it up we should be fine.

lol @ getting bounced in the third round being a bad thing, you do realize only 8 teams make it past the third round right?

Depends on how much you value rankings.  I think most dook fans I know were pretty realistic about the past few teams and their chances for an Elite Eight or Final Four run.

In other words, I can't help if idiot sports writers vote Duke a #2 seed or a top 7 ranking, it doesn't mean I think they are some unstoppable force that can't be beaten.  The past few teams in particular have been quite flawed.

Duke's playing UNCG now on Fox Sports South.

Duke is like the Washington Generals to the world's Harlem Globetrotters.

Very few black players on the team. And Coach K is Polish. Hmmmm....

They are sitting him out of various games throughout the season so when the inevitable suspension comes down on Cal that UK doesn't lose ALL their victories for this season.

Duke is playing UConn in the NIT final right now.

I swear, what is Brian Zoubek? 7'? 7'1? Dude plays like he is 4'8. I have never seen a player so inept around the basket. He always brings the ball down and gets it stripped by a shorter opponent, if he doesn't fumble it by himself. When he actually manages to get a shot off, he's got like a 1 inch vertical. Seriously, when he jumps, try to slide a piece of paper under his feet. I'm not sure you'll be able to. He went for a layup (layup!) moments ago, and the ball didn't even get above the rim.

In other words, keep Plumlee in the game, leave Zoubek on the pine.

Seems fitting that as I'm writing this, Plumlee is in the game and just cleaned up on the glass and converted.

How bad UConn has played today:

Duke has scored 6 points in the past 12 minutes in the game. They lead by 10.

lol I remember that putback, it was solid.  Plumlee looks like a decent player this year, makes me wonder wtf he was doing last year.

Funny rant about Zoubek, I was ranting all night to my gf about that.  After the Duke game finished we watched the Bobcats play.  Tyson Chandler had a nice putback slam and I remarked that is what Zoubek would look like if he could dunk.  Which of course he can't, so he'll meekly throw up a fall-away shot while crumbling to the floor begging for a foul.

That said, Zou had 11 boards.  It's too bad he's a huge pussy though.

edit:  Also, the game was pretty much like last year.  Singler was already in March form (as in, where the fuck are you Kyle?)  Dook still doesn't have a PG, although bless Jon Scheyer for trying.  He does a fine job until the press comes and then we're lucky to make it across half court, much less get a shot off.  I hope Andre can step it up soon, we're going to need him to take the pressure ball handling over if Dook is doing anything this year.

I have the solution for Zoobs.

Sky hook.

edit: And I hope Mason Plumlee is at least half the player the announcers are touting him to be.

Everything I've heard is that Mason is a lot better than his brother.  That didn't really mean a whole lot to me after watching his brother last year though.  They said yesterday that he'll be back in two weeks so that's great news.  Too bad he doesn't play point :(

Well, the season's over. Duke just lost on the road to a good but not great Wisconsin team. Singler stepped up big, but Scheyer and Smith were mediocre. It seems like Smith came out hot those first two games he could play, but has been awful since. What's worse, is dude has become a black hole. He gets the ball and takes the shot, no matter if it is available or not. And, of course, forget passing the ball into the lane when either Zoubek and Thomas are in there. Only bad things happen. A one-handed Mason Plumlee was a better option tonight, but that's not saying much.

Bench Smith, start Dawkins, never play Zoubek, only bring in Thomas on the defensive end, but it really doesn't matter because Duke will go 12-4 in the ACC, probably win 27 games overall and lose in the sweet 16 as per the recent usual.

I don't think U of L is going to be a hard game at all for UK.  They're not even ranked this year and UK is doing fantastic so far.  I smell a Final Four and possibly a championship year.

Louisville lost to UNCC which made me LOL.  Then they turned around and lost to Western Carolina which is ridiculous.

If they give UK any sort of issue I will be surprised.  I know it's a rivalry game but man, I think Louisville is struggling this year.

Anyone that watched the game must have been in amazement at the spectacle both teams made of themselves.  There was 6 fouls called in the first 45 seconds of the game.  UK played pretty sloppy as well.  Overall, I'm happy the team got a win, but I'm disappointed in how poorly their lack of control over their emotions made them play.

Some thoughts from watching the conference games

-John Beilein continues his quest to win the "worst coach in the country" award for Michigan. How the fuck do you let the second best player in the country waltz up the court and hit a last second three, while in a 1-3-1? What the fuck  :lol

-Michigan State has looked average all year. I don't think anyone expected there to be such a huge leadership gap on the team. Lucas is a joke, Summers has been bad, etc. Izzo constantly looks like he wants to strangle these distinguished mentally-challenged fellows

-Kentucky has looked fucking amazing all year. I've been waiting for them to hit a freshman snag for months but they keep on trucking.

Just when I was starting to feel halfway good about Duke, the ACC tournament happened. Yes, they won, but they looked baaaaaaaad while doing it. It's unreal how bad they shoot outside of Cameron.

Joe Lunardi did a mock bracket on ESPN just how, had Notre Dame as the 8 seed in Duke's bracket with them as the 1. Honestly, if it was Notre Dame/Duke in the second round, I'd pencil the Irish into the Sweet 16.
Title: Re: The College Basketball Thread brought to you by UK's #1 Recruiting Class
Post by: Bocsius on March 14, 2010, 06:05:01 PM
Oh wow. The ACC is a conference that hangs its hat on basketball and historically being the best basketball conference. That may or may not be true, but it hasn't been true in recent years. At any rate, I heard a stat while watching the championship game that the "Big 4" schools have been in 56 of the 57 championship games.

*The Big 4 schools being the North Carolina schools: UNC, NC State, Duke, and Wake Forest.

Now I'm looking at Wikipedia and the list of tournament champions and, really, the count of championships by school.

Duke 18
UNC 17
NC State 10
Wake Forest 4

The rest of the league: 8, and one of the champions (South Carolina, 1971) is no longer in the conference.

Some of the schools have never won a tournament championship. Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Boston College, Virginia Tech. The last three are understandable, they've only been in the league for a handful of years. Florida State? 19 years in the league, no titles. Which brings us to Clemson. They've been in the league since day one, no titles. Come on, Tigers. Show some life.

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting.

Overestimating by a lot. I could realistically see only Duke escaping the first round. The only other team that would be favored to win would be Maryland. The rest of the teams are all 9 seeds or lower. Very mediocre league. By ACC standards, at least.
