Theres a month and a half left but what else is coming out?
My personal pick is BIONIC COMMANDO
it was a bit unbalanced but the gameplay really clicked with me and the VA and music were so freaking good it made for a fucking awesome experience
Splosion Man is a close second
What gave you the most kicks this year?
-
Does Bore do GotY voting threads like GAF?
Anyway my top two are Street Fighter 4 and Demon's Souls, by far. I still haven't played a lot of the recent releases (Borderlands, Dragon Age, MW2, GTA Episodes, Uncharted 2, L4D2 and Mushihime-sama in a couple weeks) but I don't see any of those games coming close to either SF4 or DS.
-
Does Bore do GotY voting threads like GAF?
nope
-
still Infamous
AC2 is tomorrow and that is the only thing that might top it for me, unless Zelda Spirit Tracks or The Saboteur blast my face off. Only know number one. Too many good games to care about ranking it.
-
It's obviously Modern Warfare 2. Kickass campaign and best multiplayer around. Also includes Spec Ops. Flawless victory.
-
^ zzzzzzzzz
AssCreed 2 will contest BC for top spot Im sure, cant wait to play it
-
SF4 so far. Just popped it back in the other night and had a blast online.
-
Machinarium for me until I play Uncharted 2/FFXIII.
It's obviously Modern Warfare 2. Kickass campaign and best multiplayer around. Also includes Spec Ops. Flawless victory.
I heard the campaign is really short and has no ending.
-
if you are playing on regular.
-
Probably Dragon Age for me. Timesink rpgs > *
-
50 Cent Blood in the Sand
-
Uncharted 2 or MW2, I suppose. Weird, though, since Rainbow Six kicks MW2s ass. Infamous was entertaining as hell, but it's hard to overlook the presentation.
-
Unless something I've forgotten about comes along, for me it's:
Best:
1. Street Fighter IV (360/PS3)
2. Bayonetta (360)
3. Uncharted 2 (PS3)
4. Resident Evil 5 (360)
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
Worst:
1. Suggoi! Arcana Heart 2 (PS2) WHAT A PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT. Worst port ever. :punch
2. Samurai Shodown Edge Of Destiny (360) This isn't even out yet, but I've played the arcade version. It's a huge, steaming, smelly, festering TURD.
3. KOF XII (360/PS3) An incomplete beta with broken online. SNK should be ashamed of themselves for this and Edge Of Destiny.
4. Scribblenauts (DS) I wonder what typing in "ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz" will do?
5. Way Of The Samurai 3 (PS3) Not a bad game, but it just got boring fast.
By platform:
Multi: Street Fighter IV
360: Bayonetta
PS3: Uncharted 2
PSP: Tenchu 4 (this might change to Tekken 6)
PS2: KOF 2002 Unlimited Match
DS: Undecided...barely played it this year.
Wii: NSMB Wii
Wii Ware: Castlevania ReBirth
PSN: Wipeout HD Fury
XBLA: Shadow Complex (I need to finish this!)
Best non-2009 games I played:
1. Mirror's Edge (PS3)
2. Tomb Raider Underworld (360)
3. Uncharted (PS3)
I haven't played potential GOTY contenders like Borderlands and Demon's Souls yet.

Feel free to make one if you'd like, but nobody seems to care too much 'round these parts.
-
demon's souls is goty
-
50 Cent Blood in the Sand
agreed.
-
It's interesting that no one has yet to mention Batman Arkham Asylum. Already forgotten about?
-
demon's souls is goty
That's my 2nd pick and if we were doing console only I guess it'd be my GoTY.
It's interesting that no one has yet to mention Batman Arkham Asylum. Already forgotten about?
It was great compared to the games released in 2009 until then. But then the fall games hit which were full of AAA goty contenders that were a notch or three above what Batman delivered.
Batman is still like the best licensed game in forever. But that's like beating turtles in a 100m dash.
-
I heard the campaign is really short and has no ending.
The campaign is as short as Call of Duty 4 and most modern day shooters, and the story's main narrative comes to a close, although the cliffhanger ending puts off people.
And no way is Rainbow Six: Vegas better than Modern Warfare 2. :lol
-
What cliffhanger ending?
-
:bow Street Fighter IV :bow2
-
50 Cent Blood in the Sand
agreed.
shit that game is good, its definitely in my top 5
-
Ask me again in a week. Need time to play L4D2
-
Batman thus far, but AC2 with probably be the most awesome thing of all time.
-
RE5 is still my GOTY, with BOREderlands a close second. I still haven't played Dragon Age or Batman, both of which could contend for the title.
-
1. Uncharted 2
2. Demon's Souls
3. Infamous
4. Batman: Arkham Asylum
5. Resident Evil 5
.

964: Brutal Legend

Picross 3D

Dragon Age
Modern Warfare 2
Batman
All GOTY material for me.
Honorable mention: Forza 3
Curious to see how improved AC 2 is also.
There were a number of good games I played this year that while not GOTY material were very enjoyable: Trine, Shadow Complex, etc.
-
I think it's safe to say that any distinguished mentally-challenged fellows who go crying that "gaming sucks" or "gaming isnt what it used to be" are stupid himutards.
-
1. Dragon Age
2. Batman: Arkham Asylum
3. Borderlands
4. Red Faction Guerrilla
5. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
-
And no way is Rainbow Six: Vegas better than Modern Warfare 2. :lol
Pfft. The few moments of greatness that MW2 SP can muster all occur when it pretends that it's Rainbow Six Extreme, and even then it's more of a Rainbow Six The Ride to the original masterpiece of game design. Fun stuff, but it doesn't have shit on Rainbow Six. Hell, it has a tough time measuring up to GRAW.
:bow Rainbow Six :bow2
-
MW2 is pretty awesome based on campaign but since I haven't played multi yet, it's hard to call.
Haven't played Uncharted 2 yet or Demon's Soul.
Resdient Evil 5 is the overall most fun I've had this gen, but Dragon Age is close too.
-
There were a number of good games I played this year that while not GOTY material were very enjoyable: Trine, Shadow Complex, etc.
Trine is actually a game that is tied for number 2 for me, then again, so are a dozen or so others like Batman, Little King's Story, Uncharted 2, Dragon Age, Demon's Soul, possibly Torchlight, NSMB Wii, possibly Forza 3, etc etc.
-
is Rainbow 6 dead ?
R6V online is probably one of my most played games.
:bow terrorist hunt :bow2
When I played Vegas 2 earlier this year there were plenty of online player matches. I got 1000 on it.
-
I really liked RE5 when it first came out and MW2 is my current addiction, but I'm gonna have to say Street Fighter 4. This is the first time in my life that I've been truly hooked on 2D fighters and it's all because of that game. Since playing it I tried out BlazBlue, MvC2, Garou, KoF 98 UM, and SF 3rd Strike.
There's a chance that I'll change my mind after playing more MW2 though. I haven't finished the campaign yet and I've only tried a few of the Spec Ops missions.
MW2 is pretty awesome based on campaign but since I haven't played multi yet, it's hard to call.
smh
-
I haven't played multi because I CAN'T play multi. I pirated it for pc!
I will play multi when I get ps3 version later this month.

Ranking the fighting games this year:
1. Street Fighter IV (the all-around best; fantastic game play, great character roster, plenty of modes, and overall very good online. Cannot wait for Super!)

2. Tekken 6 (This is the first Tekken I've enjoyed playing this much. Huge 40 character roster, but it's surprisingly balanced, and there's tons of moves to learn for everyone. The scenario campaign is dumb, but makes for easy customization, and while the online has a number of issues, a patch is on the way. I can't stop playing it!)

3. BlazBlue Calamity Trigger (Despite having online that blows away EVERYTHING else, the game has roster issues; it's unbalanced despite having a small roster [which is kinda typical of Arc]. Continuum Shift should hopefully address this. Still love the game, but ended up dropping off after a couple of months. The upcoming PSP port and upgrade will get me back into it.)

Honorable mentions:
-KOF 2002 Unlimited Match (The GOOD KOF this year. Like '98 UM, you get a massive 60+ character roster, new/added moves, new stages, and new music. I hope the XBLA port next year has GOOD online play.)

-Melty Blood Actress Again (I have no idea what the hell the name means, but this iteration of MB adds three play styles, changing up the moves/abilities for each character, SFA3-style, and also has a pretty kick-ass soundtrack.)

-Soul Calibur Broken Destiny (Good port of SCIV to the PSP. While the game play is fully intact, better balanced, and has some new elements added, something just feels missing with the lack of an arcade mode and endings. The quick battle mode, offering ghost battle-like AIs to play against, definitely makes up for it. Customization offers more as well. The real "problem" here is that this is a PSP game and it does not have online play, so chances of playing multiplayer are slim. Still makes good practice for the console versions.)

-Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 XBLA/PSN (The re-release of the game on XBLA/PSN, with widescreen and filtering added, plus some pretty decent online play. Really not my thing, but I'm still glad to see it get ported, and hope that more Capcom games follow suit. Would love to see SFA3 and Vampire Savior get the same treatment!)

-KOF '98 Ultimate Match XBLA (The netcode's not great, and the game is missing the 3D backgrounds and arranged music from the PS2 version, but '98 UM for ten bucks is a steal.)

Dishonorable mentions:
-KOF XII ( The hype was insane and for the first time in years, KOF was getting people interested. And then the game came out, lacking in modes, characters, moves, and just generally feeling incomplete. Add to this completely broken, shit netcode, and you have a game with too many negatives outweighing the positives, despite the good game play. XIII should probably end up being the game this should have been.)

-Suggoi! Arcana Heart 2 (This was a great arcade game, but the PS2 version is an embarrassment. Awful graphics and slowdown affect game play. Big FUCK YOU to Examu for actually daring to release the game in this state.)

-Samurai Shodown Edge Of Destiny (It's not out yet on 360, but I played the arcade version in 2008. TOTAL. CRAP. I will laugh my ass off this has good netcode.)

-Garou MOTW XBLA (Great game, decent XBLA port, bad online.)

Just missed the cut-off:
-Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom Cross Generation Of Heroes (Hit right at the end of last year. Has balance issues and needs some fixing up, which seems to be happening with Ultimate All-Stars, on track for early next year. UAS will also offer more characters and online play, pretty much making me wonder why they bothered putting out this version in the first place.)

Overall best company: Capcom (For Street Fighter IV alone.)
Overall worst company: Examu (Because even though SNK's games had a myriad of problems, at least they were playable.)
-
I haven't played multi because I CAN'T play multi. I pirated it for pc!
I will play multi when I get ps3 version later this month.
smh himu, why are you determined to be a ps3 cigarillo?
-
I really have no qualms about saying Dragon Age for my pick. It's probably both the best RPG and the best strategy game I've played all year (PC version). After finishing the PC version the game left a sort with me the same kind of 'this is one for the ages' feeling that I got from some of the all-time greats-stuff like System Shock 2 , Baldur's Gate 2, and Freespace 2. It's a game and a series that's both tremendous now and has huge room to grow in the future (mods, DLC, and the in-progress sequel).
There are a few other notable releases from this year that appeal to me that are still not out, but I can't see any of them eclipsing Bioware's opus.
-
my gut tells me Dragon Age.
-
If we're calling GOTY so far, I'll put my vote in for Forza Motorsport 3. It's lived up to my expectations so far, and it's a lot of fun just taking the Bugatti out on the Benchmark high-speed ring and barreling down the backstretch at 240 MPH in cockpit view. Well worth the cash I paid for the CE version. :-*

No one else gives a shit about car games, try playing something FUN.
-
I really like Street Fighter IV, but I never get to play anybody online. I also bought Garou and MvC2.
-
lol at Himuro. Stuff the PS tripple version, stick with the PC pir8, and give CRAPtivision the big finger for charging too much for their toys
-
Lyte, for me it'd be:
Blazblue - awesome, original, gorgeous, exciting, amazing online, awesome story mode
SF4 - all the above except I hate the roster and no decent story mode
.
.
.
.
Tekken 6 - Horrible online, terrible 2p offline (NO COSTUMES FOR BOTH PLAYERS), terrible story mode; terrible graphics but core game is really good. Roster is huge and great.
Tatsunoko - ok roster (too small; some chars suck), kinda fugly, doesn't quite replicate MvC2 gameplay because the 2.5d physics are off. Still decent
.
.
.
KoFXII - lololollolol
Didn't play Arcana2 because the port sucks, never got really into Melty Blood, and have no interest in re-releases of old games with online play.
-

There's championship and player modes (don't do ranked) all waiting for you to play online!
You can always hit me up for a game too.

Who cares about story mode, but more importantly, HUH!? to the roster. You gotta give it to BB for having the complete package AND being much more accessable than Guilty Gear. But the balancing issues just bring it way down for me. The top three just trounce everyone else. For example, as a Tager user up against Rachel, all she has to do is hit me once with a NORMAL attack, which stuns me, and I am completely fucked. Bring on the 50% damage combo after! And that's Tager, who has the biggest lifebar. How about switching to Taokaka! She's FAST! Nope, the fuckin' chair stops everything dead in its tracks. -_- That aside, I love the game play, and I love that it does stuff like punish turtlers.
I think I am gonna load the game up and see what online's like nowadays...

Did you get this on PS3? The online's better on 360. The graphics aren't "terrible" either. One thing I didn't try was to see if a second player can sign in and use a profile on 360, for his/her own costumes. But then you'd need another profile with saves if that would actually work.
Tatsunoko - ok roster (too small; some chars suck), kinda fugly, doesn't quite replicate MvC2 gameplay because the 2.5d physics are off. Still decent
I still like it a hell of lot more than broken-ass MvC2, but it needs work. Hope UAS will deliver; worried about online on the Wii.
Didn't play Arcana2 because the port sucks, never got really into Melty Blood
You should try Actress Again. It's really good and easy to get into. Maybe just "try" the last PC version and see what you think.
and have no interest in re-releases of old games with online play.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

BB's balance issues are only for high level play. Generally when playing your average dude online or at least with my local friends offline, anyone can stand a chance against any. Just like most fighting games are when outside high level play.
As for SFIV, I hate the standard SF cast outside Ryu & Zangief. They bore the shit out of me. The new characters are ok, but not that great. and Super is more of the same (same old roster). I'm only curious about SSF4 for the SF3 chars to see how they match up against SF2 chars that weren't in SF3. I know SF4 is a great game and all, but I can't play it more than once a month or so because after 1-2 hours I'm totally bored. It doesn't feel "new" enough for me. It feels a lot like a perfected version of the same game I've been playing for a decade. BB feels totally new because the cast is super original even if the system is GG-like.
Also story mode if done EXTREMELY WELL like GG & BB is a huge bonus for me. Getting an actual plot and mode with a START and FINISH is nice. I like SP games.
-
Plenty of people online in BB (on PS3).

I wouldn't consider myself anywhere close to a "high level player" in BB, and I notice this stuff immediately. YES, I am using the lowest-ranked character, but it is more than obvious how much better Arakune, Rachel, and V-13 are than everyone else. Still give the game love and can't wait to see how Continuum Shift turns out, but there's no doubt that for me, I wouldn't have played BB as much as I have if the online wasn't as amazing as it is.

Yeah...I can tell. :lol It has no bearing on fighters though. I hopped online in BB from day one and have yet to even play through arcade mode once. Multiplayer is where it's at when you have online in a fighter and aren't with friends. From what I have seen, BB's plot is still "animu lolz."
-
For me SF4 and BB (and HD Remix) stand far above any other fighting game this generation. But then again I'm pretty biased towards 2D.
The BB story seemed pretty decent, but it's like 10 minutes of dialog, 60 second fight, 10 minutes of dialog, etc. When I play a fighting game it's because I want to play a fighting game, so I haven't even finished the story yet. :-[ And like 95% of the time I've spent with BB has been solely with Tao. Her fighting style fits me perfectly; I have almost no desire to really learn anyone else. Her 5C Counter Hit -> 6C combo set up... :drool
Tekken 6 is pretty good as well but the online is putrid.
Garou and KoF98 are great games but they sit along with Tekken 6 in the shit online department. Then again both Garou and KoF98 (vanilla version?) are on GGPO so it's not really a big deal. Still haven't bought KoF12 even though I planned on getting it day one. I'll probably just skip it completely. The new Samurai Shodown is just sad.
-
I've only played one 2009 game so far, Halo 3: ODST.
Therefore, my GOTY nomination is null.
-

Me too...I VASTLY prefer 2D fighters to 3D fighters. But Tekken 6 is just awesome. There's a reason why the arcade version dominates the way it has. '98 UM is also way up there for me, nevermind the XBLA version. The game itself rocks so hard.

Yeah, story mode is nothing in fighting games. That's not why I play them. I don't think I've ever played one that wasn't nonsensical and/or unintelligible (earlier fighters) anyway. BlazBlue's definitely got some great (and ORIGINAL!) character designs. I'd like to get better with Tao. Right now I am working on "booby lady."
Tekken 6 is pretty good as well but the online is putrid.
Yes, but I have to stand by "YMMV" on it. I've had plenty of good matches. Whether the fighting game community at large sticks with it online depends on how good a job Namco does patching it. Then again, tons of people said Soul Calibur IV had shitty online, and I disagree on that, too.
Garou and KoF98 are great games but they sit along with Tekken 6 in the shit online department. Then again both Garou and KoF98 (vanilla version?) are on GGPO so it's not really a big deal. The new SS isn't sad, it's a fucking atrocity. No point in bothering with XII now.

Did they ever patch the Raiden handcuff glitch in KoF12? That was hilarious. Wasn't it a day one patch that caused it in the first place? :lol
Oh SNK... At least I still have Metal Slug 7 XBLA to look forward to when it comes out in 2019. Oh, and the KoF shooting game because it's going to be retardedly awesome.
-

Yeah, the second (IIRC) patch fixed that. It took MONTHS for 360 to get that patch...only came out a few weeks ago. :lol
The only fun I had with XII online was ONE TIME against a player in the same area. There was no lag, so it was awesome. We played for hours because neither of us had seen the game run that smoothly.
Oh SNK... At least I still have Metal Slug 7 XBLA to look forward to when it comes out in 2019.
I wonder if that is even coming out, now that they've announced Metal Slug XX for PSP.
-
Forza is crazy fun, don't hate.
-
I think I am gonna load the game up and see what online's like nowadays...
I think it's still easy to find people online on the 360.

TONS of people on the PS3 version. I'll check out the 360 version again another day. It's fun playing this, but I want to get back to SF and Tekken.

Other than that I'd say Beatles Rock Band. Haven't played Batman yet, I really want to.

Fallout 3 GOTY came out this year. :hyper

I'd probably go with Dragon Age coming out on top even with the shitball dwarf questline and Batman AA following closely behind, though there's still some games I need to go through like AC2 and Demon's Soul.

For awhile it was Infamous. But I think L4D2 has taken it.
-
Dragon Age.
Came out of nowhere for me, because the trailers didnt get my hyped which is a good thing.
I think the advertising actually worked against the game. Was really loud and obnoxious frat boy shit showing off the game's worst feature, the visuals. It honestly wasn't until a) EviLore's big thread and b) that badass CGI trailer that I thought "hrm, is there something good here after all?". Seriously, I wasn't even sure I was going to buy it until a week or so before it came out (and now it's of course my runaway GOTY).

I think the advertising actually worked against the game. Was really loud and obnoxious frat boy shit showing off the game's worst feature, the visuals. It honestly wasn't until a) EviLore's big thread and b) that badass CGI trailer that I thought "hrm, is there something good here after all?". Seriously, I wasn't even sure I was going to buy it until a week or so before it came out (and now it's of course my runaway GOTY).
agreed. Game was not on my radar at all, then everyone started gushing about it.
Same thing happened last year with Fallout...I kind of gave up on caring about it, even watched videos that made it look like a really horrible FPS, but once I got my hands on it, I was hooked.

Confirmed: Assassin's Creed 2 is the best game of 2009
Assassin's Creed 2
So it's a lot better than the first game?
It's the most improved sequel since ZoE2, if not better
Holy shit. Ok I'm playing this today.
Did you see about the ending? :wtf I still may dump Episodes From Liberty City for it though.
Why would I read about an ending before I even play a game smh
It was one of those "you won't fucking believe this shit" type posts.
Ending was awesome. I want AC3 so bad.

I kind of always had faith in BioWare- I figured that it would be better than Mass Effect, (and DEFINITELY better than the craptacular trailers) which was enjoyable enough. Same thing with Bethesda and Fallout 3 last year- although in that case I was kind of just hoping that they would do something a little bit different with a new license since I didn't really think that Elder Scrollifying Fallout was the way to go. Of course, I'm predisposed to loving timesink wrpgs, so in both cases the game was in my wheelhouse so to speak.

I'm sure Dragon Age will be my mythical GOTY whenever I get around to playing it.

I played until sequence 3 at Tuscany today. For me AC1 was about a 6/10 game. At the start of AC2 it felt about 6.5-7/10. Then when they introduced the greatly upgraded stealth systems that actually makes stealth WORK and useful in this game as compared to AC1 when there was zero point in stealth it got better. Then when they introduced the combat systems that were decently upgraded from AC1 it got a little better. Right now it's about an 8/10 for me. I'm guessing there are still a lot more systems to be introduced and each one will make the game increasingly better?
Still hate the platforming though. Holding up and having it auto-do everything is zzz.
