Title: Two of the guys behind GOTY 2008 Dead Space have a new studio
Post by: Bildi on November 17, 2009, 06:50:52 PM
Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey are heading up the new Sledgehammer games.  I always had the impression their enthusiasm (along with the rest of their team) was a fundamental ingredient in the awesomeness of Dead Space.

http://kotaku.com/5406932/activision-announces-sledgehammer-games-new-home-to-ex+dead-space-leads

Downside is they are working on some existing Activision franchise and I can't think of any standout Activision franchises.  They seem at their best when working on something original that really inspires them.

So I guess this is a thread about shitty Activision games.

Hopefully it's not something lame like James Bond.

If it is some lame franchise maybe they can inject some life into it.  I don't really have high hopes though.

Dead Space is one of my favorite games from this gen, so I'll be on the look out.

a totally extreme current-gen River Raid would be pretty swank, but it ain't that.

I doubt its James Bond either, as development of that prolly started quite some time ago.

Haha, it probably is.

Bizarre (PGR series, The Club, Blur) is doing James Bond.  I'm a bit excited if it's focused on car chases.

fuck that, port river raid directly.  One of the few atari games that probably still plays fine.

I'm confused, you obviously meant to type "Fallout 3 is GOTY 2008.  Bitch." there.

Mirror's Edge and Fallout 3 are are in at least my top 5 of 2008 and worthy GOTY 2008 contenders.  Bitches.

Fallout 3 was easily GOTY.

I thought the Dead Space team was making Dante's Inferno -> DS2?

Actually, most of the Dead Space team is still tied up with Dead Space. Dante's Inferno has a separate team that just happens to include some team members from the Dead Space dev team.

These guys were pretty instrumental, so it remains to be seen how Dead Space 2 will ever shape up.

There was a job posting recently for an "online level designer" for Dead Space 2. Shoe-horned multiplayer.  :-\ I just hope it's not co-op shoe-horned into the single player. Dead Space's creepy atmosphere would lose a lot of its impact with two people.

But damn would it be fun. RE5 is great co-op.

Just like Team Ninja will be making Ninja Gaiden 3 -> DoA5.

Actually Visceral probably still has most of the core team intact. But still.

Uh oh.  I pre-ordered Dante's Inferno because I figured if it was the Dead Space team it must be good despite the distinguished mentally-challenged boob spiders and shit in the trailers.

I think it still looks promising, and Visceral could become a good developer, but I think it would be just as disingenuous of me to say that the next Castlevania is going to be amazing because it's being produced by Kojima.

... although there are some that will count that as a strike against the game.

eh, I'll play extraction someday.  Seems neat but Dead Space was badass.  Zero G jumping was awesome.  Walking outside the ship with no air was awesome.  Meteor shooter mini-game was not awesome.

Eh. It just doesn't fit in Dead Space in my head for some reason. Not that RE5 wasn't super fun.

*raises hand* Present!  When was the last time Kojima made an actual good GAME?  He needs someone to rein him in and beat him mercilessly; unfortunately we'll probably end up with a "Castlevania" with an awesome first hour or so and the rest of it will be 80% cutscenes and chatter droning on about the nature of vampirism.  Also, Dracula will be gay.

I'll be honest, when I heard that the studio's name was Sledgehammer Games, this was the first thing I thought of.
