I thought this franchise was always full of shame and that's why Prole plays it?

That's true, but I think it gets even worse with each installment.

Quote
When heroines in upcoming PS3 role-playing-game Ar Tonelico III activate in-game songs, their costumes show more and more flesh. This, explains producer Atsunori Kawachi, is for a very important reason.

By showing more skin, they are able to absorb more of the planet's energy," said the producer at a recent press event.

Continuing, he added, "The world can only be saved because the heroines took off their clothes!"

I know you're being sarcastic, but the first game doesn't have any playable character under the age of 14 and the second game only has one.

Though, she looks cold at first, Shurelia is actually shy and quite clumsy (sometimes she trips and lands with her face while chanting spells). She has no sense of direction and often gets lost, even in her own tower. She has a great fondness for bunnies and their related stuff (from dolls to bunny-shaped food to the point of bombs and restoring items).

738 years old. :rofl

Just elongate the body and add some titties at least.  That artwork makes the character look like she's 11 years old.

Maybe one day otaku will grow out of the moe-loli phase.  I'm all animu, but damn do I detest that shit.  That reminds me of a dude I used to know back in college.  He was all into fighting games and everything.  He graduated several years before me andI never saw him again after that.  Found out from another friend that he'd just sit at home all day in his parents' basement online, and was jobless.  Then one day he hits me up on AIM and starts telling me about how he likes this girl and that girl and all that, but they're all underage.  He sends me a (clean, thank fuck) pic of one of some young girl that looks like she's 12 years old.  "Can you BELIEVE she's only 13?!?!?!  :o :o :o :o :o"  "Uh...yeah.   :-\"  I tried to change the subject and made a joke about it, ending with "LOL," and he responds with "LOL...I? ha ha."  I stopped using AIM after that, but did load it up several years later, and he was STILL on.

I shed a single tear when I saw the redesigned characters for Star Ocean 2 on the PSP. Looking at that difference basically tells you all you need to know about the way RPGs have gone since even the late 90's.

It will, hopefully, go away eventually, as did trends that were over-used during the 80's and 90's.

Yes, give me games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, where I can choose to have sex with fully-grown females (or males, hyuck hyuck) instead of telling lolis to remove their clothes and watching magikaru dansu henshin for za piyaa uworudo!

You say that like it's not better or something.  Sure sex in games is awkward and dumb (kind of like sex in high school) but if we're going to be sexualizing game characters I'd prefer they look like they're legal.  AND you're ignoring great games like Fallout 3 where there's no sexual interactions with the main character.

Western rgps >>>> jrpgs this gen, fo sho.  I know you don't particularly care for either, but it's true!

No mayne, I'm totally on your side on this one.  Agreed 100%.  I can't play JRPGs.  I've actually played through and beaten Mass Effect, which is amazing considering how much I hate RPGs in general.  I like what Bioware and Bethesda have done lately, and that's about it.

Now they're just generic animu, same with the voice acting. The VA and character designs in the original were bad, yeah, but at least they weren't that.

I haven't bought or played a single Gust game.

WRPGs have been so much better this generation than JRPGs that it's ridiculous. Fallout 3, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Oblivion, The Witcher, King's Bounty, Neverwinter Nights 2, Drakensang, Sacred 2, and a few more minor games.

Even Two Worlds was more fun than most of the JRPGs I've played this gen. :lol

If Prole comments, he should just abandon the whole "I'm not going to get it" and then buy it on the sly a few months later.  Just come out and admit that you'll be buying and going "uguu~ ^__^" when you buy it.

If I played those kinds of games, I'd admit to it. I mean, you kind of have to because I don't think you could even will yourself to buy them unless you were just so far gone that you didn't even care anymore.

Edit: That laughing girls pic is massively awesome, by the way. Like...I can't even fathom how awesome it is because only a third of it will fit on my screen at once.

The problem isn't that WRPGs are better, the problem is that JRPGs get progressively worse.  WRPGs are the same, boring, sci-fi (or some medieval bullshit with orcs) shit that we all derided before.  Japanese developers don't give a fuck anymore; they're all porting their SNES and PS One shit to the DS.  That or designing games that would only be acceptable on the DS since the bar is low enough.

Yeah, I think that pretty much nails it. Some people are quite vehement in arguing that WRPGs aren't nearly as good as they were back in the 90's with the heyday of Black Isle and the like, but JRPGs are so much worse off in the regard.

I think the last JRPG that I really enjoyed was Persona 3. Nothing from this generation has done much to pique my interest, except for a faint hope that FFXIII turns out to be fun.

It's more of an action-RPG anyway, right?  I'd like to try it sometime, and I'd actually like to give Persona 3 a chance.  Will probably do that when the PSP version comes out in English.

The only "RPG" I know I will buy for sure is 3D Dot Game Heroes.

By default and sheer volume I'd say the console fps has been nearly perfected... of course the problem is that you have to wade through tons of crap and mediocre entries to play the good stuff... or at least you would if you didn't have two thumbs and discerning taste, like THIS GUY!  HEY-O!

And Bebpo, just because we say the same things over and over doesn't mean they're not true, or make jrpgs any better this gen.

Goddamn I hate this commercial so much, it's always playing on the TV.  At their display at the supermarket, there's a video always playing the goddamn song plus showing you how you can do the proper dance for it.

Thank god. If you did it wrong you'd look like such an idiot.

Yeah but I think that most game genres have gotten progressively worse this gen...

What else besides RPGs?

I'd say that the sandbox action genre this generation is the best it's ever been.

It's a shame I hate sandbox action games...

Exactly.

It's hard to agree that high quality wrpgs aren't being produced in a gen that gave us Fallout 3 and Dragon Age.  Just sayin.

Demon's Souls is a fantastic JRPG, but it doesn't fit the mold.

It's more of an action-RPG anyway, right?  I'd like to try it sometime

Yep, action-JRPG but totally awesome.

You should play Fallout 3 then. Or Vampire the Masquerade. Or Jade Empire.

I've played and beaten Fallout 3 and Jade Empire already - loved Fallout, hated Jade Empire. Vampire the Masquerade sounded interesting (as did the Arcanum game from the same company), but I heard both games were an absolute mess of bugs.

Vampired the Masquerade is mostly fixed thanks to fan patches. I played through it over a year ago and worked just fine.

Stop playing animu RPGs, man. Life's too short.

I'm pretty sure that FF 13 is gonna be the last big budget, cg heavy animu wankfest jrpg ever.  Which is awesome, I haven't liked a game like that in two gens.  Moar Fire Emblem type stuff, plzkaythnx.

Wait are we hating on weeaboos now?

Then you gotta hate me cause I love me some jRPGs like Baten Kaitos, FFX-2, Tales of series!

Bring it on, BioWare biatches :punch :gun :punch

We're willing to except Baten Kaitos because it's awesome, FFX-2 we'll except because it comes across as a parody of animu RPGs, and Vepseria is the best JRPG this generation so we'll except that too.

wtf, abyss was superior to symphonia in every important aspect. (gameplay, story, less cringe inducing weeabootastic characters)

the only area that symphonia beats abyss in is load times, that's it.

Valkyria (and Demon's Souls) is vastly different from your typical animu JRPG, so it's in a weird place in this battle between the Red Blooded Murrican RPGers and The Weeaboo ex-pats. It looks all weeabooie, but doesn't really play like one.

Those are "exceptions" to the JRPG lockdown.

Yeah, it was clear that Troika had no idea how to do realtime combat. Writing, quests, voice acting, setting, and atmosphere were all some of the best of any RPG though.

Those games aren't the JRPGs everyone is hating on.  It's the traditional turn-based stuff that's getting the hate.  Not strategy/RPG and action/RPGs.

it seems to me that there are more "different" JRPGs than "standard" ones recently (where by "recently" I mean "the last 9 years")  I don't really get where the complaints of stagnation or whatever are coming from, at least in terms of game mechanics.  but whatever.

If by "different" you mean "shades of creepiness" then yeah, but then again you're the only person who has said with a straight face and complete lack of appropriate shame that you intend to get this, so yeah.

FWIW, I've never played any Ar Tonelico game.  I've listened to the soundtracks though.  I'm not much for the loli stuff either, but Gust's sound team are some of the best composers in the industry today, and their lead music composer is also the director/lead writer/lead game designer for the AT series, so I dunno.  I sort of suspect Advanced Theory (http://www.esquire.com/features/ESQ0704-JULY_AMERICA) applies here.
