Title: Anybody interested in Samurai Warriors 3?

It's coming out in Japan on December third.  I know the smart thing to do would be to wait for the inevitable port to PS3/360/PS2/PSP/PC/Atari 2600/whatever, but I'm kinda hyped for it.  It looks pretty nice and doesn't have that "PS2" look to it, for once.  It's got character customization and DLC (likely free like the other Koei games) too.

The character designs are pretty good.  Not too animu, not too stupid.

But with all the great games out right now, it's hard to justify spending time on musou over other games.

The new totally gyaru chick cracks me up though.  You got Final Fantasy XIII on your plate, but for me there's nothing else I have any interest in for a while (other than the Saboteur, but I don't know if I'm going to buy that at launch).  I think the next game I'm going to buy for sure is TvC Ultimate All-Stars (another Wii game WTF is going on?!  :o), which is at the end of January.

Why bother with musou games with sengoku basara coming soon. :smug

Oh yeah, :bow Basara 3 :bow2 will reek of extreme hard coolness, but that's not for like 4-5 more months.  Plus I like the Orochi and Sengoku Koei games.  Capcom's gonna be dominating early next year with that, SSF4, TvC, and the new RE5 content.

I'll wait for the 360/PS3 version.

It will be a while, but you just know it's coming down the road!   :lol

I'm too impatient and already went ahead with a pre-order.

Is this series even important in japan to spur console sales?  Media Create been kinda boring for awhile except for the epic bombas.

I watched the trailer.

As a big homosexual of the Musou games, a few things intrigued me.  I like how clean the game looks and some of the Musou attacks appear to have a little variety in them.  On the other hand, at some point in the trailer, it had something about Gackt, which made me kind of :-\

I think Dynasty Warriors is a much more popular series, but clearly they have to be doing well when Koei releases all these gamed on what feels like an almost monthly basis.  :lol

Sengoku Musou also seems to be the first game to be pushing the new classic controller pro-- the one that looks exactly like a PS2 controller.  I have the regular version on order...hope the regular classic controller will work well enough.

And yeah, visually the game looks pretty impressive, considering the platform. Noticebly better in visuals and animation over the PS2 games.

Maybe Koei thinks this will be a big Wii title.  There are FOUR versions coming out:

-Regular version
-CC Pro bundle version
-Treasure Box limited edition
-Wii bundle version

I tend to enjoy things more when I pay for them.  Like, I get free soda at work, but the soda I buy tastes better.  I have  no fucking clue why.

I agree, since I barely touch my DS and Wii. I mentioned it in the ps2 thread of himuros - nothing beats an original.

Wii games price collapse anyway, I feel kinda dumb buying madworld and hotd overkill for 50 each when they went down to 30 a few months later.
Best feature of the console!

Yeah! I want it so bad! Sucks that 7 characters don't have musou modes and 4(?) were deleted completely.

I'll probably get Basara 3 since i'm curious about the series but the designs in it are so stupidly over the top and animu. The SW series have much better designs.

I'll get this when it's on a real console for $20.  :-*

That's why the Basara series has been a breath of fresh air. That and the gameplay is is crazy fun.

It's weird that they gave fictional characters like Kunoichi a musou mode, but dropped story for some of the other historical ones.  I read characters like Fuuma Kotaro, despite having strong connections to one of the new characters, didn't get a musou mode this time.   ???

Who got deleted?  I see Gracie's not in there, but she sucked anyway.

Did you ever try SB2?  Can't remember.  SB's designs may be all over the top (although not really "animu"), but the characters have so much more personality and more diverse fighting styles because of it.

So briefly-

-The game still has that "PS2" look going on, but with a slightly cleaner image and a little more detail overall.
-Decent frame rate with a little slowdown here and there.
-Supports Wiimote+Nunchuk, Gamecube controller, Classic Controller, and the new Classic Controller Pro.
-There are three main play modes.  Story and free mode are the standard fare.  New is Muramasa Castle, based on an old Famicom game.
-Muramasa Castle doesn't really feel much different than the other modes.  It's level based and has an overworld map; you fight on smaller stages against brain-dead enemies (there's no difficulty setting for this mode).  There's some traps here and there and water damages your health, but otherwise it just feels like a stripped-down version of the regular modes, with fewer enemies to fight against.  Hopefully it improves with more play time.  Leveling up does carry over to the main game.
-CAW Character customization seems pretty limited.  Just a a few character types and variations on them.  There's a way to change the colors for main characters; didn't see anything about alternate outfits.
-You can now carry items in your inventory!  There are three different item packs to choose from before battles, each with different health and enhancement power-ups.  They can be selected and used at any time during the battle.
-There are now five orbs next to your life and musou gauge.  These get filled up as you attack, and when full, they can enhance your musou attacks' power level.  (These are pretty cool-looking!)
-The in-game map now has arrows to point you in the right direction to your next objective.  This can be ignored if you want to explore or use an alternate route (The arrows will also readjust themselves if you do this.)
-The morale gauge seems to be gone!  Not sure if this is a good or a bad thing.
-The rest of the game play is the same as the previous title.  Two attacks, musou, rolling, and the character-specific ability/attack button all return.

It's pretty much more of the same overall.  Feels like a minor upgrade to Samurai Warriors 2, which was to be expected.  I'm playing the game using the Classic Controller, and it works well, although it's slightly annoying having to press the Zr to roll.  This is where the Classic Controller Pro would be very beneficial.

Musashi and Kojiro were cut. Arguement being that despite being well known, weren't really connected to the events in the sengoku era that SW focuses on.

EDIT: No morale gauge? uh oh..

Btw, were officer defeated quotes cut?

You mean the voices announcing it?  Yeah.  They don't say anything now.

EDIT: ...Although when I just now beat a minor officer, the character said it.   :lol

One thing I really like is that they changed the character unlock system-- you get money after levels and it is used to unlock characters, so if you don't like certain characters, you never have to use them now.

Like the Naruto fighting games on GC or Gundam Musou 2, I don't see the point in locking characters available in the previous game.  It's like "do you really want to work for them AGAIN, when you can just load up the previous game and play them in similar campaigns for the most part?".

They should lock the new chars except 1 or 2 to start with, but all the old cast in fighting/musou games should be available from the start IMO.  If you need lots of stuff to lock then lock things like extra musou attacks that are selectable when you pick your character like SFIII supers or Basara special moves.

Will get the inevitable PS3 version.

I read the game's sales haven't been too hot so far.  That's what they get for making it Wii "exclusive," lolol.  "The best way to play our new game is to use a controller that looks exactly like it was designed for the Playstation 2."  We hope you will purchase our long-time Playstation/Xbox series...

...on Wii."

Thank god, I remember having to play through shitty characters like Oichi to get to characters I wanted to play (like Nagamasa)

It's much, much better this way.  Plus you get the points needed to unlock stuff just from playing single levels in free mode, and additional points for clearing a campaign.  They changed Oichi, by the way.  Redesigned with a new weapon.  I haven't tried her; not too big on the character design.

They shouldn't lock characters in any game, unless they are meant to be hidden (and are not revealed before release).  There are other features to unlock in SW3 though, like edit colors, abilities, and weapons.

Did I mention that you can also earn various armor parts now, too?

Of course it's not!  That would require more work on Koei's part!   :lol

It's the same armor parts for everyone.  You can equip to everybody after you get them.

You know what really makes this game kinda hard to play?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bayonetta.
[close]

But I played it for a long time yesterday.  Beat it with Hanbei, messed around in some free levels, messed around in the Muramasa castle, and got about halfway through two more characters' campaigns.  It's quite a solid game, but it is absolutely, 100% more of the same formula with some slight changes.  At least the enemy variety felt better.  The new guys that lob bombs can be both a blessing and a curse!

Uh, the musou games always have and always will have terrible action compared to action games.  You just have to accept the musou games as a seperate genre of strategic action where the bigger picture of the battlefield powers is more important than the actual combat.  Cause until they start giving larger movelists and better combo-ability, the musou combat is going to be zzzzzzzz

I'd like to see a musou with 8p online coop or 8 vs 8 though.  Would work very well and make the game more fun.
