I.e.- Do I need the original King's Bounty? If not, do I get to keep my character or is a straight do over? Trying to see if I should just leapfrog the original

Sequel. You can play it without the OG game and you start from scratch.
-
It's an 'expandalone'- a standalone expansion that's sort of a sequel in terms of changes and feel.
One big caveat to jumping straight into KB:AP - it's a lot harder than KB:TL. Much, much harder. So if you haven't played the original you might need to play KB:AP at normal or more likely easy.

I got about 50% pf the way through TL. Maybe I'll finish it. It was already hard enough!
Q: I know that you can only command X # of soldiers based on your leadership score or whatever. But I could never find how much leadership score each unit took up- Did I miss it somewhere? I always just kind of added more until it was like TOO MUCH DUDE QUIT IT.

If you click on the unit and open up it's information window, you'll see the leadership score per individual troop. If you mouseover the number there you'll see the total number of troops of that type you can have in the unit.
Leadership is dramatically reduced in KB:AP, which is the primary source of the upped difficultly (along with prevention of getting abusive spells sooner and re-working of the skill trees).

Ah. I started a new game today and think I got it: Leadership is PER UNIT TYPE not a collective pool of units? I.E: If Knights take 50 and Archers take 50 and I have 300 Leadership, I can have SIX of EACH, not 3 and 3, right?

That's right.

Jackals are fucking sweet. I didn't get Ancient Bears on this playthrough, though :(
