I don't care about the rabid consumerism to be honest, but I just hate the aesthetics of it all--green and red, an old scary man and smelly reindeer, creepy elves, etc.
Christmas music, decorations, holiday versions of anything, and then ending in New Years, which makes you reflect on what you didn't accomplish over the past year. :yuck
Bring on 2010.
-
I don't hate it, but being Jewish, I never gave a shit about all the Xmas stuff. Christmas day is also incredibly fucking boring. Can't do shit except go to the movies and get some Chinese food.
It's for the kids anyway. When you're old enough to buy your own stuff, it doesn't matter anymore. Then the holidays are just a way to get your ass in stores to make them more money. And if its stuff for your loved ones, why do you have to wait until a specific time of year to show your affection? It's not like it's a birthday, where there's some specific meaning (unless you were born on Christmas day!)-- isn't Christmas supposed to be celebrating the birth of that bearded hippy-healer guy? I don't see what rushing to stores and fighting off some fat bitch to get some electronic hamster-pet toy has to do with it.
-
I hate shopping, putting up decorations, and huge crowds in most public places. Also, New Years has always been an uneventful day for me.
I like that family members visit, big meals, being on vacation, decorations (as long as I don't have to put them up), and some Christmas music.
-
I love it but the past two Christmases has been guilt ridden since I haven't had enough money to buy every extended family member presents (but they get me a little something). I AIN'T NO CHRISTMAS POPPER.
-
I was raised muslim so up until a few years ago, Ramadan was always during the holidays and that's a whole month of mourning and fasting so I've always hated the fucking holiday season. The "happiest" official day might be black friday if I get anything good.
-
I hate winter in Michigan
-
i buy people awesome presents, so i love it.
-
I don't step foot into a retail store until Feb after thanksgiving.
I don't like the increased car traffic during the month of December
That stuff is annoying but I like looking at people's lights and hearing xmas sounds and presents and trees and menorahs and stuff. So I take the bad with the good.
-
Nope, I usually enjoy Christmas. Any holiday is a good holiday when there are people you care about around you. That counts for everyday though. :)
Consumerism isn't an issue unless you make it one.
-
Nah, I love giving and getting gifts and spending time with my mum. Love having the tree out and loading it up with presents.
If I must outline negatives it would be that the children of the world are also on holidays, and that many stores are closed.
-
Oh, and if you do all your shopping online you never have to endure endless waves of stinking consumerist whores. 8)
:bow the internet
-
I used to love christmas, but the consumerist bullshit has worn me out.
-
Christmas is the second best holiday after Thanksgiving, fact. You guys are just negative nancies.
-
I fucking hate the holidays.
-
I'm starting to hate them now.
A lot of my coworkers are bragging about the gifts they are buying and now it has turned into a one upping exercise. The total is now up to $350 for how much one spent but all of the other coworkers insist that they're not done shopping yet.
There is a required gift exchange (wtf) and the dollar limit minimum is $20. I'm just going to buy an iTunes gift card for $25 if there is one. Might cause some snickering in the office place since I make more money than all but two of them. I'll be on vacation 400 miles away but it is still required and if I need to skip out on the gift giving, it'll be a declaration of war in terms of office politics. Considering the nature of gift giving this year, everyone's gift will be well over $100, making me look like a cheap jackass but fuck 'em.
Gift giving was never big in my family. We were poor and when we got money, we were so used to going little or without for gifts that we continued not really emphasizing the consumerist portion of it. Although I'll give a decent gift for my parents and that is it.
-
No. Halloween -> Thanksgiving -> Christmas is the ultimate trifecta of awesome AND THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR.
-

I feel sorry for you. You've never experienced a true Christmas. :( It's just like Thanksgiving: cooking, food, family, except with gifts.
-
I don't mind it, but I hate dealing with crowds and the cold weather. I love getting gifts though, I am a selfish bastard :-[
-
Christmas music is super aggravating. I think the problem is that its trying to convey that people don't act like selfish pricks around the holidays which is bullshit. Christmas is about spending lots of money and eating too much, and I can do that any time I please. Growing up in my house was a stressful ordeal as well. The holidays weren't a time to enjoy yourself. The holidays meant that if everything from our clothes to the decorations wasn't absolutely picture perfect our mother threw a gigantic hissy fit about how we were ruining the thanksgiving/christmas/new years. I'd dare say it was never worth the swag especially when she decided vidyagames were the devil and refused to buy us anymore.
:maf BAH HUMBUG :maf
edit: And the worst Christmas song ever is that sappy recent one about some kid getting shoes for his dying mother. Apparently she needs new kicks to show off to Jesus.
-
Other than being broke as shit during the month of December, I do have off work from 12/24 to 1/4.
:bow staycation (over and above the 3 week vacation they give me)
My job :bow2
-
I hate the cold weather because I don't want to go outside. :/
-
Love it. The consumerism aspect does wear me down a bit as it gets closer, but I love buying gifts for people, and Christmas day still always has a bit of "magic" to it.
-
Oh and the depression that sinks in when everyone is talking about their plans is a real bummer too. Maybe I can try being happy for them this year.
-
How can you hate the holiday season? You get to wear scarves and drink coffee.

Your balls freeze to death.

:bow Christmas lights and movies, family, seeing old friend, awesome cold weather :bow2
:piss Retail and gift-hunting, working during holiday season, IN retail :piss2

sounds like you could use a little global warming :smug
-
The holidays are the best. Days off from school for Halloween, week off for Thanksgiving, then months off for Christmas.
-
I fucking hate the holidays.
The other children are right to laugh at you, Ralph.
Idiots who get all uptight over commercialism and forced sentimentality should be made to donate their time at a local animal shelter or soup kitchen. It won't magically make anyone understand what the holidays really mean, but at least their grumpy a-hole selves will be doing the world a tiny bit of good.
-
How anyone could hate the holiday season truly puzzles me. I guess it makes sense if you've a Jewish background, after all their naivete thinks that it's actually about JESUS!
-
If you were raised Jewish, Muslim, celebrated Christmas for Jesus, worked in retail, attempt to get anything productive done, or are/were poor it isn't hard to see why it might suck.
I imagine hell is working retail during Christmas.
-
It can be.
-
Working in retail is the only reason to hate the holiday season.
-
Christmas music is fucking shit. Christmas "spirit" is just fucking annoying. It's just a reason for stupid people to ask why you're so cranky. NOTHING HAS CHANGED! IT'S JUST COLD! WHY SHOULD I BE HAPPIER?! I don't even really get presents now except from my wife and it's shit I would have gotten anyways. If anything, it delays me getting them so that she can say "wait for Christmas". And on top of that, it doesn't fucking count, because I buy gifts for a lot of other people like her fucking family who never buys us anything. Fucking hell. Did I mention the music is fucking stupid? Plus, I hate family gatherings. I'm not a close family person. I hate forced gatherings. It's fine for a bit, but then we feel obligated to be there and then I hate it and I'm bored as hell. And everyone always wants to eat... then talk... then open presents like 3 hours later so there's like 3 hours of annoying fucking bullshit in between. It's not like I'm getting anything anyways. So I get to watch a bunch of kids open shit. My shit's at home. It's already attached to my vehicle or on my shelf ready to be watched/played. FUCK YOU, GUYS!
The only upside is seeing how much my daughter loves Christmas. Watching her get all excited about it is one of the best things ever.
But other than that it's shit. Same with Thanksgiving. Turkey fucking sucks. And there are no presents. Just annoying family gatherings. Black Friday is the best thing about Thanksgiving. I fucking love consumerism. It's awesome. If you don't, go to North Korea. Because I love buying shit. I love price drops. I love other people buying shit. Fucking hippies.
-
Turkey sucks? Come to my place around next Thanksgiving. :smug

No, thanks. I miss your family, but I hate turkey. Every kind I have tried. The only way it is good is with tons of gravy or with some titties. I'll go bang you though.
-
You haven't had black people turkey have you?
-
I'd rather drop the whole presents thing and just hang out with family. That's what I enjoy more anyways. :heart
-
You haven't had black people turkey have you?
I've had black people, Mexican people, Salvadorean people, white people, redneck and mutt people turkey. Redneck and black have by far been the most acceptable, but still not my cup of tea. In comparison to other meats, it's just not flavorful. We could be eating something decent for Thanksgiving. But instead we're eating turkeys. I think that's what pisses me off the most. Give me duck. Give me goose. Give me chicken. Give me HAM!! OH HAM! HOW I LOVE THEE. FUCK ME.
-
I love getting gifts. I don't like buying them that much. I love time off. :-*
what's black people turkey? googling only lead to a bunch of questions about whether there's racism against black people in Turkey.
-
What do you think of turkey sandwiches, Ed?
-

black people turkey is just turkey cooked in a slightly less disgusting fashion. i don't know the specifics because i'm not black. i can only assume it's voodoo since they manage to make that disgusting bird somewhat edible. Time off is a great thing though. I'll agree with you there.
What do you think of turkey sandwiches, Ed?
Those aren't bad. I like making a shitton of turkey sandwiches after Thanksgiving. One of the highlights. But again, there's other crap on there.
-
Black people turkey tends to be fried.
-
I love chrismas, but hate new year's. with the advent of online shopping, christmas is totally great. we don't have a big family though, I can see how that would suck. I've never really got the purpose of celebrating new years. I've found it a bit depressing since I was a small child.

I've been to a few black thanksgivings, and after the turkey is done, the slices were pan-fried before being served.
I'm curious about how widespread the practice of deep-frying turkeys is. Is everyone else doing it now? When done right, it is FIRE.

Mupepe, just bring a Turducken. Problem solved! Also, bring a ham! I know there are Logan's Farms in Houston.
-
But then I still have to show up for awful family gatherings. I'm going to just take your Turducken and eat it at home while watching blu rays and playing games in my jammies.
Himuro: Remember my awesome black neighbor, Mark? The guy with the crazy wife, Wanda? He deep fried our turkey one year. It was the best turkey I've had. But still, he could have deep fried some snickers or a ham. Damn. That would be awesome.
-
Every year we do a Thanksgiving dinner with all of our friends the weekend before. One friend typically fries a turkey and puts the other one in the oven, but this year we had two fried turkeys. Sooooooo gooooood.
-
On other years, the oven turkey was always the one that had leftovers, right?
-
a few years back we had a neighbor who didn't think/know to thaw the turkey before lowering it in. he was almost killed. :lol
-
On other years, the oven turkey was always the one that had leftovers, right?
We actually never have leftovers since we average 25-30 people every year. I'm sure the fried turkey is the first to go, though.
-
no leftovers?? that's a sin. next day mashed potatoes and gravy and turkey sandwiches is so awesome
-
no leftovers?? that's a sin. next day mashed potatoes and gravy and turkey sandwiches is so awesome
There's always leftovers with family Thanksgiving, so yeah, they do rule.
-
no leftovers?? that's a sin. next day mashed potatoes and gravy and turkey sandwiches is so awesome
I take a cake pan, put all the mashed potatoes and spread out on the bottom, then the corn and green bean casserole, then the stuffing, then the turkey, and pour the leftover gravy over it all as the "icing". After a night in the fridge, you can cut it out of the pan in squares like lasagna. nuke for 2 minutes and it's as good as Thanksgiving itself. :drool

It's like 80 degrees in CA :-\

UH. No it's not! It's 50 degrees F in the day, 40 at night. I'm fucking freezing here. I just got some arm warmers in the mail to make late night gaming sessions easier. :D

My fingers are still cold though. :'(

Vacations, food, alcohol, gifts, awesome cold weather, alcohol, drunk chicks on new years eve, eggnog, christmas candy.
I don't see what's there to hate.

I feel sorry for you. You've never experienced a true Christmas. :( It's just like Thanksgiving: cooking, food, family, except with gifts.
LOL, Himu-Himu talking shit he doesn't know about once again. You think I've never "experienced" Christmas? One side of my family basically dropped religion all together and has Christmas dinner and all that crap. I've been to plenty of them. Fuck the turkey though; gimme that ham. :drool On the present side of things, there is no difference between Christmas and Hanukah. Well, we get eight days and can have it earlier. :smug Like I said before, it's for kids. Now I can get and buy presents whenever.
I can turn the tables and say I feel sorry for you. :( You've never experienced a true Hanukah. No potato pancakes, no chocolate coins. No matzoball soup. Damn.
How anyone could hate the holiday season truly puzzles me. I guess it makes sense if you've a Jewish background, after all their naivete thinks that it's actually about JESUS!
Again, considering there is a Jewish holiday this time of year, that means jack and shit. You also didn't read my post, since I said that "Christmas" as most people know it isn't about ol' hey-seuss anyway. Cold, shitty weather, going to overcrowded shopping malls to look for shit? No thanks. I also have worked retail during this time. It's even fucking worse. I enjoy getting together with family and giving gifts, but that happens year-round anyway. I'm sure the holidays will feel better whenever I have kids, because then it's about them. This time of year's great as a kid 'cuz it's vacation and presents presents PRESENTS, plus if you live where it's cold enough, you get snow days off from school. When you're an adult, that changes to tons of shit to buy buy BUY, plus you have to entertain your kids and go outside and shovel fucking snow. Maybe you can also get some time off. At least I'm back in Atlanta now where snow shoveling is a non-issue.
Fuck, I need to move to someplace that's warm year-round.
