Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 07, 2009, 03:56:55 PM
I'm buying my sister a book, my brother two graphic novels, my best friend a graphic novel, my cousin two books (Twilight ugh) and a few other books for people.

Nah, unless you buy a book for a kid. Kids want toys!

Books are the best gifts.

This is true if you want to insult someone as well; simply buy them an Ayn Rand book.

Seriously, can't you just fucking go away?  We all know how this is going to end; it's not like you've proven yourself entertaining, funny or anything else.  I'm honestly mystified as to why you got unbanned.

What's wrong with books? Now, if you were buying books for some ADD fuckup that would be questionable, but then again you could always go with an Atlas Shrugged graphic novel instead

It's mostly family related gifts. Non family related gifts are pretty easy. But when it comes to family I want to give them something awesome. It's not like I'm going to go up to my grandma and be all,"Hey grandma, you wanna hit up a bar? I know a good one on Westheimer. We can get really smashed!"

Get your grandma something she would like. Does she ever tell stories about a family farm in the south or something? Some far off place where she tells stories about? Get her a book about the places she's been, like a cofee table book with big pictures.

That was last year. This year my girlfriend was really naughty so I got her a subscription to Mother Jones.

I always thought books were the best gifts, even as a kid. I remember sneaking a flashlight into my room and staying up after my bedtime to read Jules Verne and Roald Dahl in the dark. So many great memories.

I usually get people games and stuff too. I bought my sister some DVDs and she'll be getting an iTunes gift card. My brother will be scoring a pricey import ale and a XBLA game, as well.

But I've always found books to be the best value, and something that can stay with you forever - even when it's a simple gift. Someone on this forum bought me a book, and I'll never forget it.

Used books are disgusting. Chances are the prior owner took that with him while they took a dump. Would you knowingly buy a game boy that someone had on the shitter?

That book isn't even good enough to be used for toilet paper.

My sister is a fan of the Twilight books and movies [not a fanatic though, thankfully], so I'm getting her Queen of the Damned, The Vampire Lestat, and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Everybody else is getting books and DVDs of some kind.

If you find yourself buying clothes though...

Books don't work unless you know exactly what the person wants because people usually have very specific preferences when it comes to something as time-consuming as reading.  A gift card might be a better idea.

Well you've probably borrowed books from all those people other than your cousin so there shouldn't be any confusion in this case as far picking something decent.  Generally, it's harder to get a gauge on people's reading interests versus other media within the first 5 minutes of meeting them.

Just the opposite.  It's a sign that everyone in your social circle is hip enough to pirate all their other media.

Actual old people buy each other CD's.

And really old people buy each other Christmas CDs, which are good for about 4 hours after being opened on Christmas, and then have to be put away for a year.
