Title: Silent Hill Wii
Post by: demi on December 09, 2009, 08:14:56 AM
I didn't think it could be done, but we finally have a game that is worse than Silent Hill 4.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

The Silent Hill series is pretty much dead. It needs a reinvention like Resident Evil 4.

The Room was awesome, much better than SH3 in my opinion. YMMV of course.

The Room was pretty good, it had a great concept. But I really hated those ghosts you couldn't kill.

When it comes to Silent Hill games:

1. Silent Hill 2
2. Silent Hill
3. Silent Hill 3
4. Silent Hill 4
5. Silent Hill Origins
6. Silent Hill Homocumming

If you want to play a great Silent Hill-type game, try Siren. I hope there's a new Siren in the making.

Now I no longer can say 4 is the worst game. Please don't waste your time on this garbage.

Here's the plot twist ending to the game:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Harry Mason died in the car crash a long time ago, the person at the therapist is actually his daughter, Cheryl. She develops some sort of father issue and becomes sexually deviant and fucks older men and longs for a father like Harry. The entire game is Cheryl's messed up mind. Gone is the ritualistic demons and witches, instead turned into an MTV version of underage sex and fucked up childhoods.

My SH rating:

1 > 3 > 5 > 2 > Origins = 4 > Wii

Now that's just plain dumb. Here I thought it was going to try to be more in line with the film. Seems like they made a list of everything that would make a remake of the first Silent Hill cool then made it a point not to do those things.

I've been playing the game for about an hour. It is ok.
The controls are horrible, though. The pointer controls don't always respond that well during escapes, so it makes it quite frustrating to escape from enemies. And I've encountered a few glitches already. Some doors don't open when you run through them.
The graphics are good for a Wii game. Nothing special overall.

And Cybil is fucking ugly in this game. She looks like an old hag. I want my original Cybil back.

And there's no combat in this game, GM. You can only hide and run away. You can also use flares to stun the enemies.

What signs didn't tell you this beforehand?

-Game delayed over and over
-Konami ships a whopping 2 copies per store because they have no faith in it
-Yamaoka LEAVES Konami after 16 years, probably cause this game pisses on the SH franchise he helped create
-Wii/PS2/PSP release

???

/still playing it once it finishes transitioning to my wii in a bit.

You get different Cybil / Lisa / Michelle / etc depending on what choices you put for the tests. I got slutty Cybil because I put that I dont drink, I've never cheated, yadda.

I mean really. Sex questions? Cmon, it's a wii game.

I don't get the logic, you would think they would give slutty cybil to the people that DO drink and cheat and stuff.

I also think it is funny that slutty cybil is the one that looks most like the original.

I've been living under a rock. Is this a Wii-make of SH1?

They call it a "re-imagining", it's definitely not a remake. It has characters that werent in the original at all. None of the locations are the same, etc.

It's more of an MTV modernization. I guess a remake would be apt by today's movie standards. If you read the plot ending spoiler I posted then it fits. Only some hack writer would use that twist ending.

The idea is actually pretty neat. I'm someone who checks out everything in a game. I don't know how this'll effect my progress/ending.

And the graphics effects for the first real world to nightmare world transformation were pretty impressive for the Wii. I think that was the best effect ever for a Wii game. The game has a lot of slowdowns, though. And I hate the fact that you can't hide forever for the enemies. They spot you way too fast.

A few things stuck out to me.

1.  The framerate is a fucking mess.  This bothers me a lot because it's like HEY 60FPS and then drops to like 20s ALL THE TIME.  It's always fluxuating based on how much is on screen and it's visually annoying.  Should've locked it at 30fps if they could've hit that.

2.  Control is interesting.  Takes some getting used.  I think it's good for exploring and trying to put yourself in the character's shoes, but I get the feeling it will be horrible for the chase sequences.

3.  Doesn't seem to use the music much early on.  Kinda dick since SH is music.

4.  Graphics look nice at times, but then other times the enviornments look Dreamcasty.  Plus the game is full of jaggies and dithering, but fuck that's every wii game.

5.  It's SH1 again.  Why do I care?  I don't want to look for Cheryl anymore  :-\

Title: Re: Silent Hill Wii
Post by: dark1x on December 10, 2009, 07:33:43 AM
So does it look worse than Silent Hill 3 in person?  Sounds like the framerate is pretty bad.  Origins had a similar issue on PSP.  It would jump to 60 fps with your flashlight turned off and drop to 30 when it was on.  Of course, this seems to go even lower...

It's a shame that the recent Silent Hill game have all been a technical mess (especially considering how impressive the PS2 games were).
Title: Re: Silent Hill Wii
Post by: Bebpo on December 10, 2009, 12:43:25 PM
The models are close but not quite.  The environments are definitely not.  They're going for having more junk on screen at the expense of framerate look.  It also doesn't have the nice lighting.

SH Wii has the same problem that 99% of Wii games have:  it's unpolished and no one cares to put the effort in because it's a Wii game.  One area looks like a nice PS2 game, the next looks like a PS1 game?  Who cares, it's on Wii.  One section has 60fps until you turn your head and it drops to 30fps?  Who cares, it's on Wii.

The only companies putting any real care into their products are some Japanese devs.  Nintendo does for their major 1st party games of course, but in terms of everyone else only a few games like Madworld, FF Crystal Bearers, Tales of Graces, etc... really show off the screen by screen polish that was expected of major PS2 games and that we expect from AAA PS3/X360 games.

Eh, the PS2 had the largest percentage of 3D 60 fps games of any system to date.  There were tons of 60 fps games on the PS2.

I think the point was that a game like this, released on PS2, would have had more effort put into it (technically).  Few developers seem interested in pushing the Wii.

I think this game is mostly just a mixed bag of clever gimmicks.  Its a good game if you're into novelty.  That being said, they really missed the point on making it scary at all.  The chase sequences are okay, as in you get worried when you realise you've run in a huge circle and now the monsters will be coming from all directions.  Yet, outside of those sequences there could've been at least some roaming monsters to be creepy if not lethal.

Also, the text on your phone and on some of the signs is too small to read.  this especially bothered me in the principal's office whereas you had to read a phone-number on a sticky note.

The passwords are different depending on your psyche profile.  In my game, you had to read a sticky note and call the number.  At the number you would get the first name of the principal's ex wife.

And fuck the memento bullshit too.  I go out of my way into an area just to get some marble.  It does nothing and will never be used again, then I have to turn around and walk for 5 minutes to resume whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing.  You'd think they could do something cool with finding a derelict water tower in the woods but no, not at all.

The escape sequences really hurt the game. It's not scary or tense- it's fucking annoying. The controls during escapes are so broken.
This is the least scary Silent Hill game so far. Besided being chased by monsters, nothing else happens that could possibly scare you. The game is really boring.

Title: Re: Silent Hill Wii
Post by: Third on December 12, 2009, 07:28:23 PM
The game doesn't have anything scary going on besides the escape sequences. But I think removing the escape sequences wouldn't have hurt the game, at all.
The current approach with the monster is pretty bad. The idea is nice, but it gets boring and repetitive. You basically just run away, climb and smash through the doors during those sequences. Repeat x1000. And all the envirnoments look the same. Hiding is a waste of time since the monster will spot you amost instantly. Just keep on running until you smashed through the right door.

I think the game would've been better if the escape sequence were planned/scripted. The current mechanics are a mess. You can get lost during escapes and the monsters are so annoying when they attack you in a group. You just can't escape when they do that. And I didn't even try because the Wii control swinging was straining my arms after a few tries. I always let myself get killed when they ambushed me.

The story is the only decent thing, mostly for the ending... but it's still overall "made for MTV". It's just the gameplay is TRASH. People who say its like a PnC never played them, for one.

It's not a point and click adventure, but I definitely wouldn't call its gameplay trash. Granted, it takes some practice to shake off the monsters in the nightmare world but I didn't have any problems with it as I got accustomed to things. I wish I could get into more depth about this or at least paste my original impressions but I'm on my BB right now.

Personally, I think it's one of the best survival horror adventure game this generation has seen. The story and the various endings were fantastic, the Wii-mote flashlight functionality was superb, and the pacing was almost perfect. Old SH fans might have some misconceptions about the game, and as a result some grudges, but having never played a SH before this one offers me a fresh and different perspective.

Lisa's appartment, especially the kitchen. That part looked really great
[close]

But the game didn't really blow me away like the previous SH games when it comes to atmosphere. And the linearity of the game really takes away what made the first SH games so great. Sure, the original SH games are somewhat linear, too. But this is much worse. You basically just go from A to B and don't do other shit besides that. The original game also had a much larger map that you could explore.

A real SH remake would've been a so much better game that this "reimagining"

Why dont you just download them instead? Its not like GameFly is any different. Saves yourself money and time.

I don't know how off the top of my head. Searching for that kind of stuff always gives me a headache as you tend to end up bouncing around from site to site looking for instructions.

Beat the game a few weeks ago. Probably the best pure survival horror game this generation. If you want to play an action game with uninspiring monsters, pick up RE5; if you want to play a true next-gen horror game cut from the same cloth as RE1 and Alone in the Dark, then Shattered Memories is your game.

I posted the Giant Bomb link just to get a rise but I'm legit interested to play the game and that doesn't happen very often with me on Wii games. I'm fine with removing shitty combat from a series that always had shitty combat and focusing more on the story. I only really played Silent Hill for the atmosphere anyway. I view it roughly as an adventure game.

I probably won't get around to getting it on Gamefly until Feb though.

Thanks for the impressions.  I will put this on my Rapidshare queue right away!

RE5 has uninspired monsters? Silent Hill wii has one fucking monster type.

Copy and paste x100

That's the only monster you'll see in the game.  :lol

This new Silent Hill has the worst monster design in a SH game so far.

The chases are horrible. But that's thanks to the shitty execution. The controls and level design are just awful during those sequences.

So lets see, besides running in convoluted hallways, what else does this game provide

- walking
- shining flashlight
- solve a puzzle

Amazing game

The game is pretty good. You're just mad now because you got a lame Game Over in Bayonetta.

*looks at OP*

No, pretty sure game sucked before Bayonetta (which went down a TON of notches because of that design choice)

That ending. Damn

Overall I would score the game a 3.5/5. But my opinion of it is higher than the score. The score is brought down due to the fairly lame chase sequences. I really enjoyed everything else tho.

I'm going through a second time to really test the psychology aspect by choosing radically different answers than my first run through. Wanna see how different the game turns out to be.

I just watched the youtube video's of the alternate scenes/endings. Didn't want to replay the shitty chases all over again.

I wonder what happens if you

I did that accidentally (I'm slightly color-blind) the first time I played.

You go into the therapy session (which, tellingly, is about guilt and inevitable death) right after you give her the pills and before you leave the apartment, not after you get back like usual. Lisa's phone call is much more frantic, asking if you did something wrong and she's screaming a lot.

Also, you find Lisa already dead on the couch with a lot more blood splattered on her face and couch, instead of still alive and starting to bleed. A bottle full of the wrong pills you gave her is spilled all over the coffee table, and she's got a couple of them in her hand.

Also the chase sequences got easier the second time through since I figured out you're supposed to do a shoving or elbowing motion with your controller still facing forward, rather than shaking the controller in a certain direction like in most Wii games.

amazo game, demi continues to be annihilated by the wii and its incredible games *cue nintendosbooger wall of text*

picked this up on the cheap a week ago and just finished it.

I really liked it.  Its almost a pure adventure game, there's some really cool usage of your very handy in-game cell phone and the way its integrated into the game world is pretty cool.  If it weren't for a dearth of clever puzzles (which number only a few), and with that, an utter lack of difficulty, this would have been a wholly satisfying game.  As is, its still pretty good, the good ideas outwheigh the not always great execution of them.

The graphics are also not shitty, which, for a Wii game, is an admirable achievement.  My biggest actual complaint would be that its not actually that scary, it trades terrifying for eerie.  Its a solid game and I'd love to see the series continue in this way (it won't), more focused on environmental exploration, storytelling and puzzle solving vs. thunking a monster with a pipe.  But then again, I waited a year and a half to play it, didn't I?
