Title: The Star Wars prequel trilogy is pretty awesome...

Having not seen more than a minute or two of an of the PT in at least 3 years, since Episode III came out on DVD, I decided, because morbid curiosity conquered reason, to take a trip down memory lane and see how things have changed.

Watching Phantom Menace, I couldn't help but feel that it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered it being. There were some pretty good scenes, decent acting, decent writing, and it still looked pretty good despite being 10 years old. Then, the inevitable: Jar Jar Binks appeared on screen. I'd completely forgotten about him. Instantly, I realized just why I have a mild hatred for the movie despite most of it actually being fairly decent. Jar Jar is beyond horrible and unbelievably annoying. Also, the kid is kind of annoying too, but I could have overlooked that. Jar Jar kills what would have otherwise been a fluffy, but fun movie. Could have done without the Gungans as a whole really. The lightsaber battle at the end is good stuff.

AoTC has a really awesome chase scene near the beginning where you get a pretty good look at what Coruscant is like. There's a really awesome battle near the end where the clone army shows up for the first time. I didn't rewatch any of the scenes in the middle, but I don't think I'm being out of line in saying that it drags a lot and features some very terrible and cringe-worthy, even vomit-worthy, scenes that are meant to be "romantic" somehow. Some of the highest highs of the PT, but also, by far, the lowest lows. Watch the first twenty minutes and the last twenty minutes. Forget that the rest ever existed.

Revenge of the Sith opens with some awesome space battle footage that unfortunately gets drowned out by Obiwan and Anakin messing around with some missiles and some robots that latch onto Obiwan's ship. This is easily one of the film's biggest faults. They had the perfect opportunity to rival the space battle from Return of the Jedi and they completely blew it. Putting that aside, it doesn't start out too badly. Unfortunately, things get bogged down a bit in galactic political wrangling that no one cares about. But it gets tossed after a while and the clones totally own a bunch of jedi, which is a high point of the movie and the trilogy. There's also a scene somewhere in there where Padme and Anakin stare out at the city and some very un-John Williams music plays in the background, which is kind of awesome because it actually feels like Lucas is trying to be a real director for a minute. It passes quickly though. One of the low points is Anakin becoming evil incarnate after about two seconds and then killing a bunch of kids because he's so HARD. The final battle is pretty awesome and is one of the movie's high points. Then Padme dies of a broken heart and ruins the ending.

If you're wondering why this thread was made, well, I hear that talking about it helps the healing process.

Phantom Menace shat on Star Wars fans, and it was a shit movie sans cool Darth Maul fight at the end, but it was at least it's own thing. The other two are just complete fan service. I had the unfortunate experience of seeing the third one twice within 24 hours the day it was released and the following one with two different groups. I still remember the dumb shit like Obi-Wan killing an enemy with a gun and giving the "guns are so uncivilized" line; somewhere in the audience someone got wood realizing it was a reference to the Han Solo vs Obi-Wan scene in A New Hope where Obi-Wan SAYS HTE EXACT FUCKING SAME THING HURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

When all's said and done, RotS is the one I consider to be the best, probably since it's the most even overall. The low points aren't as bad, though it's still plagued by some of the same problems as the other movies, and the high points are pretty high. I still wouldn't even put it over Return of the Jedi though.

I'm a firm believer in the theory that Lucas pretty much gave up after his beloved creation, Jar-Jar Binks, was unanimously hated by everyone on the planet and just started feeding fans blatant fan fiction with a multi-million dollar budget.

Revenge of the Sith is the worst, Great Rumbler. It's not consistent whatsoever (maybe consistently garbage). It looks and plays like a videogame, not a film. I wanted to ask the audience member next to me to "pass the controller", but then I realized I was in the Arclight and not playing Xbox at home.

Other than revisionist history, the impact was little. You'd have to get into really nitpicking canon to find a lot of faults with The Phantom Menace, whereas The Revenge of the Sith lumbers forward, destroying anything in its path - continuity be damned.

Those are just some of the problems that "film" has. The Phantom Menace at least has a coherent narrative, and character arcs, which is something noticeably absent in later prequels.

And yes, I will even take Jar Jar Binks over an incoherent, muddled mess of glorified fan fiction. Jar Jar Binks is just an insult to the Star Wars legacy, whereas Episode II and Episode III are an insult to cinema.

If you held me at gunpoint I might consider letting Christopher Lee in AOTC into the club as well.

I think the disdain for Jar Jar Binks is warranted, but a lot of the anger folks have towards it is due to the film falling well below expectations. It wasn't in the same ballpark. You waited twenty years for another Star Wars film, and you get... a pretty mediocre film.

It's kind of like when we used to fantasize about Halle Berry's breasts, and what they would look like. I mean, you're thinking they're going to be amazing. Then you get to see them, and they're so underwhelming to the point that it hurts.

In fact, it was the first Star Wars film I fully watched; before that I only saw clips of the original trilogy.

"I've never seen it before," she says. Everyone at the table just stopped mid-conversation and went :o, even my Grandfather's 90 year old friend. :lol

I'm not going back into the PT to look for more issues to raise, but what exactly were your biggest problems with the RotS?

Prison of Azkaban says you're on goddamn crack. That's not even just a good Harry Potter film. It's an amazing Harry Potter film and a great film, period.

At least half of the Lucas "more politics, less acting and what makes films enjoyable for normal people" attitude worked the best in that film.

Post by: chronovore on December 15, 2009, 10:27:49 AM: I saw Phantom Menace at a 1 a.m. showing on the opening day. As I was driving home at 3, I thought "I waited how many years for that? That was kind of questionable." When I was more awake the next day, I really felt like I'd been had.

Attack of the Clones might have been a decent movie, except somehow it negates the entire progress within the movie by presenting the now active but previously entirely unknown Republic Clone Army as a fiat. Finding out that it exists is the entire plot, but then when Yoda shows up in a troop transport with them to save the Jedi, nobody asks where they came from. It's like tacking the beginning of Alien3 onto the ending of Aliens -- why shit all the movie's own progress, its own story?

Revenge of the Sith is Lucas trying to race to retcon in all the story that we've known about into a movie while cutting in enough FX shots to power another 20 years of merchandising. There's no gradual slide toward evil for Anakin, no tortured transition, just a quick about-face and suddenly he's chopping children up with a lightsaber. It just doesn't make any sense. And more than any other movie in the series, Lucas relies on telling instead of showing. There's more expository monologues in it than any other SW film.

They're all hopeless. I just ignore them as best I can by watching the original three movies, and pretending that the Prequels are just really well-financed fan films.

Although I don't think it was in the original version, Empire Strikes Back showed the ice monster with a bloody stump after Luke cut its arm off with his lightsaber. Might've been some blood on its mouth too from eating the Tauntaun.

I've not watched the movie since not only because it sucks, but also because of this fact.
