Title: Microsoft most "buzzworthy" brand of 2009. Suck it Sony, Apple, Google, etc.
Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 15, 2009, 02:02:04 PM
The king has spoken. (http://blogs.computerworld.com/15255/microsoft_buzz_king_of_2009_beats_google_apple_and_amazon)

What was the most "buzzworthy" brand of 2009? According to the firm Zeta Interactive, Microsoft was the year's king of buzz, beating out not just tech brands such as Google, Apple, and Amazon, but other brands including Honda, Nike, and Walmart.

Adweek reports that Microsoft was rated the most buzzworthy brand based on a report for Zeta Interactive by interactive marketing agency Brandweek. Brandweek ranked brands for 2009 "based on the volume and number of online posts (through Facebook, Twitter and blogs), as well as the overall tone (positive, negative) of these conversations."

Why did Microsoft beat out the competition? According to Adweek:

"... the tech giant took the No. 1 spot due to aggressive advertising. These marketing efforts include the "Laptop Hunters" ad from agency Crispin, Porter + Bogusky, and a major push ahead of its Bing search engine debut. Bloggers often used terms such as "easy," "efficient" and "better" in their online discussions about Microsoft, said Zeta Interactive CEO Al DiGuido."

So whether you liked the Laptop Hunter ads or hated them, they cleary did their job.

I work in film, and all I use is a Windows 7 laptop! And I have a Xbox 360! Being a rebel! :rock

(although I use Android for my mobile needs, sorry Microsoft overlords.)

I love Microsoft's laptop hunter ads. Anything that sticks it to Apple and reminds people just how ungodly expensive their computers are in comparison makes me happy.

Bouncing back after those horrible, horrible, Seinfeld ads is quite an achievement.

Dude, those ads were awesome.

Laptop Hunter ads were stupid.  Do people really need to be told that Apples are expensive?

I'd be curious to know if it actually hurt Apple's laptop marketshare, or if it just generated results on this silly "BUZZ-O-METER".

Maybe they're not as stupid as you think. (http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/microsoft_apple_wants_laptop_hunter_ads_nixed/)

Quote
Speaking to company partners at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference keynote presentation, Mr. Turner said "And you know why I know [the Laptop Hunter ads] are working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey -- this is a true story -- saying, 'Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices.' They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I've ever taken in business."

Apparently, Microsoft did alter subsequent advertisements to appease Apple for some reason.

And here's a graph!

They measure negativity, as well. Sadly, as you can see, Sony has the most negative buzz. :-\

As they rightfully should, the GO is a POS and I wouldn't have bought a PS3 pre slim anyways.

Wal-mart's positive/negative ratio is a big red flag.  Who the fuck ever says positive things about Wal-mart?

Laughing at "peopleofwalmart" is not positive.  I call bullshit.

Yep and without a Vista to kick around anymore, Apple is going to have to be a lot more creative from here on out.

Yeah, I completely agree. Now that Microsoft has recovered from their once-every-ten-years WindowsME abortion, and produced something that runs reasonably, they can get back to aping whatever Apple does for the next few years.

In my guise as a Distinguished Mac Fellow, I'm unable to comment. (But I'm going to bag a copy of Win7 and install it on something soon. I'm interested in seeing what has succeeded XP, which I like plenty well.)

Yeah. They fucked over the classic iPod, ignore the iPod Touch, did a pissant update of the iPhone, added a USELESS video to the iPod Nano, along with other junk.

On the other hand, the Zune HD is still limited to 32GB. Why are they afraid to put hard drives on mp3 players now? FUCK. I want an update player that holds more than like 6 music albums.

Once the netbook gets truly suitable multimedia playback, I'm probably making the same transition.

Stop using FLAC as your default and you'll be able to get more than 6 albums on a 32GB storage device.  ;)

32GB is like ~4,500 songs at 192kbps or greater.

EW 192, that's like playing a xbla game compared to gears of war if gears was FLAC.

Speaking of FLAC, why the fuck won't iTunes allow it? Or iPods? I want a new music player but I jsut can't quit iTunes for some reason :(. Anyone got a suggestion for a similiar player that connects with a iPod?

Just use a FLAC converter and put your FLACs into a high bitrate but lossy format. Unless you've got bionic ears or something.

256kbps MP3 is fine.  I do keep an archive copy in FLAC on an external HDD though.
