Upon first glance, I thought it was Christopher Nolan.

I don't really like DiCaprio but maybe this role will change my mind.  I had no idea he was in it, been on a total media blackout for this movie.

Everyone has been in a total media blackout. For a $200+ million dollar blockbuster, we know pretty much nothing about it.

Yeah, DiCaprio has definitely come into his own. I'd say Scorsese knew what he was doing when he decided to make DiCaprio his new De Niro.

Forget about Titanic for a second and DiCaprio is a great actor actually. Awesome roles in Aviator and Departed.

It's just a personal thing because he has such a baby face and I have trouble buying him as an adult character.  I think he's a great actor.

True. I didn't find Leo's lean projection in his first two collaborations with Scorcese that intriguing or convincing.

However those physical features/movement can tumble into a very watchable hustle for those rough and tumble Han Solo-esque roles.. a mode where he can charm and gloss over his assholish traits... Departed, Blood Diamond, Body of Lies, Catch Me if You Can

Yeah it's an energetic performance. however I was implying the lack of a distinct mad personal force to colour this mercurial man.. and moreso any credibility of the awe Leo's Hughes supposedly commands.

the reedy voice, smooth face, and chest just overshadowed whatever focus in leo's piercing eyes could show.. too many instances I was just taken out.

his eyes have become less piercing with age, which is why i find him to be less distracting. then again, i never find big actors on the same calibur as decaprio, depp or pitt having the desire in becoming the men that they're portraying, nor do they have any reason to. as entertaining as martin scorsese's last few films have been, it lacks the soul found in his earlier work and i find his choice in actors having some part in that. then again, this is just me.

Actually, yeah. Leo looks a bit more like River Phoenix anyway, and if River was Young Indy, the son of Indy should bear some resemblance.

Oh, you meant acting chops. Yeah, that too.

The first and second act of The Aviator were good but the ending was just lazy Hollywood BS.  You can not make a biopic about Howard Hughes and not mention how miserable his last years were.  For whatever reason, the movie just ended in 1947 and basically said it was all happily ever after.  It definitely deserves some criticism.

Didn't it end with him having an OCD moment and repeating the phrase "The way of the future" over and over while his friends fetched him a doctor?

How is THAT a happily ever after ending?
Title: Re: Warner Bros. recycles Dark Knight poster for Christopher Nolan's new film
Post by: brawndolicious on December 18, 2009, 06:36:14 PM
The last 15 minutes were entirely about him "overcoming" his OCD to fight the senate and the press.  It had that one scene in the end but it basically made it look like he was mostly in control of himself since..he just fought off the senate and the press.  In reality, he was a sad miserable fuck by any standard and even for a biopic, the movie had to include what he did later on as Hughes aviation career was still in progress.  He was still a hugely influential military contractor since his company was privately owned (more able to keep secrets) but counting any of his later achievements would make it necessary to end on a much sadder note since his mental and physical condition kept on degenerating.

And then afterward it came right back, showing that he'd never actually beaten it. He'd won against the Senate and the airline companies and he was incredibly wealthy, but that didn't change the fact that he was still a very sick man. That, uh, was the entire point of the ending. I don't really see that it's that hard to understand.
Title: Re: Warner Bros. recycles Dark Knight poster for Christopher Nolan's new film
Post by: brawndolicious on December 18, 2009, 06:44:12 PM
There's no point in the film even mentioning that Hughes was mentally ill unless it was explained that Hughes got much, much worse over time.  The point should not be to make you just sympathize with the miserable fuck, but to actually understand how he became what he was.  There was a different Howard Hughes in the 40's than in the 70's.

As an aviator, he wasn't much in 1947.  The guy had a movie about planes and a tardy WW2 prototype that did one flight.  Regardless, any biopic about him can't have such a narrow focus that it cuts out the second half of his life.

I don't like how it starts with the characters already being adults. Why doesn't it show them being born and going to school and getting picked on by bullies? How am I supposed to relate to them without their entire life story being spelled out on screen?

The Dark Knight is fucking awesommmmme.

Yeah, it's awesome. Inception will probably be even more awesome though.

That's imposible, this movie doesn't have The Joker in it.

FIXED goddamnit FIXED. Don't you people know anything about logic?

It's weird.  Nolan seems pretty anal as a director, and then you see a mannequin growling at Maggie Gyllenhaal.  Really offputting to be honest.
There was enough of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins that the quarry-full-of-gravel voice didn't get me, but the sequel had so much Batman voice that it was really, really apparent how over the top he'd gone. Give me that guy from Batman: The Animated Series.
