Post by: Bebpo on December 20, 2009, 10:30:36 PM: There were so many games this year in the last half that were 9/10 or better, so stuff like AC2 and U2 are probably more deserving on a technical level, but goddamn if Demon Souls wasn't the most original and creative in a VERY GOOD WAY and addicting game this year. I hope a sequel gets announced in 2010.

Post by: The Fake Shemp on December 20, 2009, 10:42:21 PM: It's a tough call for me, but I went with Batman: Arkham Asylum. It was the only game I remember in a long time that I could not put the controller down for. It gets a spot in a select few single-player titles I will keep in my library.

Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, Street Fighter IV and Dragon-Age: Origins were all close runner ups.

Post by: Stoney Mason on December 20, 2009, 11:14:53 PM: I played three GOTY contenders for my taste this year. Dragon Age, Modern Warfare 2, and Batman which was beneath the other two but still damn enjoyable. If I had to pick one it would be Dragon Age.

I also played a lot of other good games I quite enjoyed which are on a tier below those three. Some of those which spring to mind would be:

Forza 3
The Lost and The Damned
Drop7
Shadow Complex
Trine
Splosion Man
Battlefield 1943
Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor
Torchlight
RE5

I'm also playing through AC 2 at the moment which seems like it would be able to crack the list above and recently I've started to play League of Legends a bit which I'm digging although it's too early to say whether it would make my list especially since I kinda suck at RTS games but I'm enjoying this one so far. I don't own a PS3 so obviously my list reflects that although I played a bit of Uncharted 2 and watched someone else play quite a bit of it, and it seems like a great game.

SMT: Devil Survivor is a lock for my top 10 as well, and maybe Batman, which I just finished up. Still haven't played most of the latest releases though.

Otherwise, it's a tough call. Not counting the Bayonetta demo, I think Uncharted 2 wins. My only qualm is with the Yetis...otherwise, I'm getting RE4 vibes from it--it manages to keep topping itself in every scenario. It restores my faith in barebones "run and shoot dudes" games.

3. KOF XII (360/PS3) An incomplete beta with broken online. SNK should be ashamed of themselves for this and Edge Of Destiny.
4. Scribblenauts (DS) I wonder what typing in "ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz" will do?
5. Way Of The Samurai 3 (PS3) Not a bad game, but it just got boring fast.

GOTY as a concept is sort of meaningless. Especially if a community has diverse taste. Whatever wins is cool. My major personal thought is that this was the year of XBLA, PSN, type services. I bought fewer $60 games and more $15 dollar or less games that I enjoyed a whole lot especially when you take bang for buck into account.

I'm a fan of the Halo series but like I've said before Halo ODST was nothing but a scam. The campaign length was short like MW 2 so it gets no bonus points there. It had that pointless awful hub city concept. And very little new at all in and the map packs from a 2 year old game to try to cheat the perceived value.

Reach might/should turn out to be a game worth praising since it has had the full dev cycle put in, but ODST was just not worth $60.

Sell it for $30 and I might have a different impression but not at $60.

I think that 2009 will partially be remembered as a year when DD became more fleshed out and respected in general. Trials HD, Shadow Complex and Torchlight are all incredible games that could have never flourished as $60 retail titles in today's market.

I will laugh hard if Halo Reach isn't more than Halo v2.8
It'll still sell millions, though. The Halo crowd will buy anything with Halo on attached. No matter the quality or value.

You can always make a little extra money trading on the name and brand of a popular and well respected series. See Final Fantasy spin-off's. Zelda Spin-Off's, Mario Spin-Off's, Or Treyarch... or lots of things really.

The demo didn't really sell me either for some reason, but the game is amazing from the bit I've played so far. Don't pass it up. I'm dying to get back to it when I have the time.

I guess that's the excuse for why it's so distinguished mentally-challenged. PS2 higher than PSP still doesn't make sense, but they're probably putting a lot of weight on the Go failure rather than the many great games that came out this for it. So, yeah, distinguished mentally-challenged list.

Metroidvania style progression
Respects the property its based on
Variety of gameplay styles (from exploration, to brawling, to stealth, to puzzle solving), most executed pretty well
Excellent voice acting

It gets a bit weak towards the end - the Killer Croc section was annoying and too long, and the end boss was very anti-climatic, but the rest of the game is great.
