Title: Lets do it EB!, your top films of 2009.
Post by: Diunx on December 21, 2009, 10:55:18 AM
The tittle says it all, lets post our favorite films of 2009, doesn't matter if they are independent or mainstream, if they are foreign or made on willco's Hollywood backyard, if they are a porn or an oscar bait, the only requirement is that the film was released this year.

My top 10.

1. Avatar
2. Inglorious Basterds
3. Drag me to hell
4. The Hurt Locker
5. Whatever Works
6. Zombieland
7. District 9
8. Bruno :teehee
9. Command Performance
10. 500 Days of Summer

Films I haven't seen yet

Paranormal Activity
A serious Man
The Informant
An Education
The Man Who Stares at Goats
Up in the Air
Bad Lieutenant
A Single Man
Mr. Fox
Where the Wild Things are
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasseus
Nine

Special mention

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, great drunk fun movie, can't wait to pirate the sequel.

i'm horrible at creating "best of" lists, so here are a handful of movies i really enjoyed this year

coraline
gomorrah
crank: high voltage
the hurt locker
in the loop
thirst
grace
inglorious basterds
cloudy with a chance of meatballs
paranormal activity

I liked Grace, but I felt it kind of unraveled as it went on. Some cool imagery, though.

I hate doing these kind of lists until the following year, because I still haven't seen Up in the Air or The Hurt Locker, yet.

I'm going to use this post to list them...

Watchmen
The Men Who Stare At Goats
Up
The Hurt Locker
District 9
Moon
The Hangover
Star Trek
Terminator Salvation

I guess I was right. Didn't even see 10.

God, The Men Who Stare At Goats sucked so bad. Why did I let a friend convince me it might be good?

the end was so strange.  the mother's motivations felt like they were missing as though there was some footage that had been cut out

Definitely. I also felt the film really stretched suspension of disbelief to the point where it almost broke.

I didn't see much in theaters.

Up and The Informant! were the only really good ones, probably.

i rarely have that problem in horror films though.  i'm typically willing to follow through until the end

I didn't know what to expect with this movie when I purchased it after black friday on Bluray. Watched it in 3d and the wife and I really enjoyed it.

I'm usually pretty lenient, as evident by my love for Paranormal Activity, but there is a line - and Grace was skirting it. I can only take questionable character motivations up to a certain point, usually when they knowingly put themselves in harm's way and seem to ignore all reality (versus doing something really stupid, just to progress the plot).

... Kestrastrophe, is Coraline not a gorgeous Blu-ray as well? The texture in high definition is ridiculous.
Title: Re: Lets do it EB!, your top films of 2009.
Post by: Great Rumbler on December 21, 2009, 11:28:19 AM
1. A Serious Man
2. Inglourious Basterds
3. Moon
4. Up
5. Fantastic Mr. Fox
6. Coraline
7. Avatar
8. District 9
9. Thirst
10 Drag Me to Hell

Something like that.

Still need to see The Hurt Locker, Where the Wild Things Are, and The Hangover. Probably a few others that I'm forgetting off the top of my head.

:bow Bluray. I was skeptical of the quality when I got my PS3 this summer, but I have pretty much made a full switch and buy everything on BluRay now. Inglorious Basterds is also really high quality

Copy/paste of my GAF list. Alphabetical:

- 500 Days Of Summer
- Adventureland
- District 9
- Drag Me To Hell
- The Hangover
- Inglorious Basterds
- Star Trek
- Thirst
- Up
- Zombieland

This was last month. Id now swap The Hangover out and Avatar in. Inglourious Basterds is #1.

As you can see, terrible year for Oscar bait, but a great year for sci-fi and blockbusters.

I didn't like Star Trek or District 9.

Certainly not more than The Dark Knight and all the second-tier blockbusters that came out last year - like Speed Racer, Hellboy II, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, Wall-E, Quantum of Solace, etc.

Yeah, 2008 was pretty good, although I might still be inclined to put 2009 above for huge blockbusters.

Ink
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Inglourious Basterds

Still need to see The Hurt Locker, A Serious Man, Up In the Air.

This has been a horrible year for "blockbusters." This summer was probably the shittiest on record.

Star Trek was okay :shh

I haven't seen most of the movies that I expect I will eventually populate most of this list with, like A Serious Man or Adventureland or The Informant! or The Hurt Locker, so here's what I have at the moment:

1.) Where the Wild Things Are
2.) Moon
3.) The Fantastic Mr. Fox
4.) Inglourious Basterds
5.) Antichrist
6.) District 9
7.) Up
8.) Star Trek
9.) Funny People
10.) Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

3. 500 Days of Summer
5. Moon
6. Up
7. Coraline
8. Avatar
9. Drag Me To Hell
10. Funny People (surprise of the year)

Haven't seen some of the films mentioned in this thread, but I plan on adding them to the netflix queue.

Not even sure if I've seen 10 films this year.

Oh god I thought I was alone, it'd be a waste to create a list. Inglorious Bastards definitely takes the top spot for me regardless.

Honorable mentions: Funny People (biggest surprise of the year) and District 9.

I thought I was the only one. I tend to not care for Adam Sandler movies and Judd Apatow's films tend to fall flat for me, but Funny People was fantastic.

Out of these, what was the best CGI movie(s) of the year?

- UP
- Fantastic Mr Fox
- Avatar
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
- Monsters vs. Aliens
- Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
- 9

I haven't seen a single one this year.

Up

although I heart Avatar. It may take a little time to sink but I probably enjoyed Avatar more than Up. Up was good...but..by the next week I totally forgot about it. It didn't hit me like Wall-E did.

We've been over this repeatedly... not only do I not care enough to have actually seen Avatar yet, my whole argument was that you guys were going overboard with the anti-hype hate without having seen it yet.

Cloudy was a huge surprise; I enjoyed it more than Up, in the end. Up has a great opening 20 minutes but the actual South American "adventure" didn't work for me. Cloudy, on the other hand, just got more and more gloriously deranged as it went on.

Coraline is okay, though I don't think it's the classic some are hoping it will become. Fantastic Mr. Fox is my favorite animated film of the year (maybe favorite film overall).

Cloudy was awesome from the word "go"

didn't see Fantastic Fox

:bow Hurt Locker

First time I saw it in the theater this summer and it was a very stressful viewing experience. I saw it again a few weeks ago when the film society at the university had it for a weekend. It wasn't quite as effective upon second viewing since it loses alot of the suspense, but it was still great. My friend, who is an Iraq war veteran, said that the film was a pretty accurate depiction of soldiers in EOD.

I would have to say Up is my film of the year so far if I'm being honest. God, the last two Pixar films have been out of this world amazing. Up was ridiculously great, and WALL-E is still hands down one of the best films I've ever seen.

1) Up
2) (500) Days of Summer
3) Inglorious Basterds
4) Coraline

That's all I can list that I think is truly great, I haven't seen Hurt Locker, District 9, Fantastic Mr. Fox, etc.

I'm currently stuck in Omaha, also known as the land of shitty movie theaters, so no Broken Embraces and A Single Man for me until I get back to Seattle on Monday.

I barely saw any movies this year.  I thought this was a bad year for movies although I have yet to watch The Hurt Locker (wasn't playing anywhere near me in its heyday) and The Hangover.  I might eventually crack and watch Avatar but I have no strong urge to see it at the moment.

I'm currently stuck in Omaha as well at the moment.  I agree, the theaters here suck.

Hmm, I might have to catch it before I go back.

As a side note, have you been watching the TV channels here?  The health care ads are ridiculous.  :lol  I don't really watch TV where I live so its kind of a shock (not in a good way)

Oh man, the Health Care Bill commercials out here in Nebraska are INSANE. They make up at least 90% of all the ads I've seen. We don't get them back in Washington since we're uber liberal land and don't need any coercing.

Not sure I saw 10 movies this year.  Let's see:

Favourite of the Year:

1. The Hangover
2. District 9
3. Star Trek
4. Inglourious basterds
5. Zombieland

Kinda liked:
Crank: High Voltage

Saw but didn't really like:
Transformers 2
Couples Retreat

So ya, guess I only caught 8 '09 releases this year.

Pixar has been on fire these past few years. Ratatouille, Up, WALL-E, and The Incredibles. Plus some awesome short films that are nearly as good as their full-length movies.

The Hurt Locker
An Education
500 Days of Summer
In the Loop
Inglourious Basterds
Up in the Air
The Messenger
Avatar
A Serious Man
Thirst

I didn't really like Up all that much, which is weird cause I'm a huge Pixar fan. Maybe it needs another viewing. The first 10 minutes are brilliant though.

The brilliance of the first 10 minutes is what makes the majority of the film disappointing. One day they'll have the balls to do a whole film like that, without the funny animal hijinks, and it'll be genuinely amazing. I still loved UP but it really is just a hint as to what they might achieve once they free themselves of the 'we have to make CARTOONS' mindset.

1. Inglorious Basterds (Yes, I know, I made myself look like an ass in the IB thread)
2. Moon

That's actually it, all the other movies I saw this year weren't worth rating. i liked a lot of them (Up, Star Trek, The Road, District 9) but they were also disappointing in their own ways. These are the only two movies I think that are worth seeking out on DVD.

What. The. Fuck. Dude.

Seriously, what the fuck?

The Meryl Streep parts were pretty damn good, but every time Amy Adams showed up on screen the film was horrible. Her portions were so horrible that the entire film is trash.

Poor Amy Adams, she was brilliant in Junebug but is now stuck in crappy roles.

I liked the Amy Adams parts, except for the distinguished mentally-challenged boyfriend fight/break up, which reminded me of one of the worst parts of Devil Wears Prada.

I can't be the only person here who liked it.

I will openly admit that the Julia Child/Meryl Streep portions are delightful. The rest of the film is awful.

They should've adapted My Life in France as it's own film and said "fuck it" to Julie and Julia.
