Some good indie stuff I got:

Braid - $2.49
Machinarium - $9.99
Samorost 2 - $2.49
Trine - $7.99

As well as some retail games:
The Witcher EE - $13.59
Sid Meier's Pirates - $6.69

I just watched Master and Commander again this week, so I am ALL ABOUT sailing the salty seas!  :pirate

I think that does me good except for the inevitable daily deals. L4D2 $25 believe!

And if for some reason you haven't bought it already

Time Gentlemen, Please - $2.49

is the easiest purchase imaginable! My personal GOTY.

Yeah, I played the hell out of the original, as well as the PSP version of the remake. Glad to get it for $6 for my netbook.

Anything you'd recommend out of the Bearded Grognard section?

Post by: cool breeze on December 23, 2009, 09:59:44 PM
I'm actually considering Pirates.  I had it on the Xbox and PSP, played it a lot on both.  Wasn't the Xbox game changed slightly? I don't know why I thought it was

It was, it came out like a year (?) later than the PC version with extra content.

Anything you'd recommend out of the Bearded Grognard section?

Evil Genius for $2 ( one out of five weeks unshaven on the beard-o-meter)
AI War: Fleet Command for $10 ( four out of five weeks unshaven on the beard-o-meter)
Dawn of Discovery for $25 -kinda pricey but really good ( three out of five, game is deceptively deep )
Rome Total War for $2.50 (three out of five since you MUST play with mods for the game to be really good. Europa Baraborum/Rome Total Realism ftw)
Tropico 3 for $20-again pricey but this is a lot of fun (one and a half beards)
Majesty 2 for $15 - (two and a half beards-the game has a high difficultly curve that can border on outright brutal)
Gratuitous Space Battles for $10 (one and a half beards, really neat mix of tower defense and what amounts to creative, multiple solution problem solving)
Ghost Master - $1 - This is a fun, if simple, game. (one beard)

Then there are EU3/HoI3/For the Glory on Steam, all awesome but they are the bearded man equivalent of the things you order at the vietnamese restaurant that intentionally are left off the menu so the unwary don't try them. Though EU3 is pretty palatable if you're willing to read the wiki and forums to get started.

Its actually one in the same, purchasing Time Gentleman, Please gets you BTDT included (which is also pretty dang not bad).

and I too am using this opportunity to pick up Machinarium.  As should everyone.

Also, Defense Grid is the best standalone (read: not a WC3 map) TD game on the PC and it's just $2.50. The Overlord games are good (if a huge waste of a hypertalented team) and are on sale as well.

Are these games like Machinarium or the Time Gentlemen Please pack "experience" style games or do they actually have mechanically strong, coherent yet mind-twisting puzzles? I have a huge pet peeve of games that try to look clever, subversive and "indie" but are bankrupt when it comes to actually, you know, being a game, and both games are giving me that sort of hipster douchebag equivalent vibe.

Title: Re: Steam Christmas Deal thread
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on December 23, 2009, 10:49:20 PM
Machinarium is hipster douchebag for sure, but Time Gentlemen, Please has fun logical puzzles involving Hitler's bloody stool. It is made by adventure game fans for adventure game fans, for sure. It also contains text adventure and SCUMM adventure portions as games-within-the-game.

In fact, I will gift you TGP! Start with TGP, which is a real game. BTDT is more of a my-first indie project.

I also got the Overlord pack over Thanksgiving when it was like $10 for Overlord 1, 2, and expansion. They are good, but like you said, it really feels like the team is intentionally self-handicapping to try to increase the size of their market.

Machinarium has really clever puzzles.  Some are actual puzzles like you press a monitor and a puzzle comes up.  Others are figuring out what goes where.  Machinarium is not hipster at all.  It's actually very cute like this game  :link :zelda
Title: Re: Steam Christmas Deal thread
Post by: Fragamemnon on December 23, 2009, 11:30:07 PM
The thing about the Overlord games is that they are done by a studio that made Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, a complex, yet accessible, fantasy strategy game with all sorts of very wonderful systems that got a lot of praise but never really took off. I play Overlord and think "hey look, this is a cool RTS by some really smart people who sort of held back on a bigger design because they got burned before" despite the fact that Triumph has in its hand one of the better console RTS formulas out there, if they just expanded on it a bit.

If you try out AI War, do the tutorials and don't be encouraged to start the demo game at too low an AI difficulty. The game is much better when you set the AI near the recommended level of 7, or six if you are unsure of your strategy game bona fides.

Zombie Bowl-O-Rama
Indigo Prophecy
Deus Ex
Arma

Debating about Stubbs the Zombie and Star Wars Republic Commando. Be nice to have those where I can just download and play.

I'll get SSHD for that price.  I know a few people were hoping for the L4D2 deal.  If you 4-pack it, it'll be $25.

I'm considering the id pack since I lost my doom 3 cds and wanted to replay it.  Everything else is pretty underwhelming.  This "one EA game a day" thing is lame.  All I want from them is MoH Airborne on sale, which makes sense since they just announced the new MoH.

I enjoyed it. It's just kill, kill, kill, find key, open door, kill some more. The graphics are really nice. I was disappointed that the sound effects are the exact same. The weapons don't have any oomph to them. It's worth $9 bucks, though. Have tried multiplayer yet.

Grabbed Serious Sam, The Void, Nikopol, Culpa Innata, Painkiller Black, Rome Total War, Shadowgrounds pack and Shooter pack.  Probably done with the sale outside daily specials at this point.  Might grab Aquaria on the last day if it doesn't go below 50%.

How was Hinterland?  I know a lot of people bought it back when and it has steam achievements and is ~$7.

Vegas 2 is pretty awesome.  Only problem I have with it so far is that environments all seem brown and beige.  Vegas 1 had cool casinos you fought in and Vegas night streets while Vegas 2 is more the Las Vegas no one cares about, like where people live (I mean, the one people care even less about).

The mechanics of Vegas 2 are great, and there's a good game in there. But you do most of your fighting in rec centers and whatnot. Lazy as shit, not as good as the first...offline anyway.

Should I get AP if I own Kings Bounty and haven't played that much yet?  I don't want to start playing AP and find it better than the original and then I never play the original.
Might get Red Faction, maybe Battlefield for the lolz.

If you can deal with really REALLY hard puzzles, Cogs is a cool game at that price.

I've seen Bebpo that you bought Painkiller. Great choice as this is a tremendous old-school FPS game. Yes it is literally go here, find a red key for red door and repeat ad nauseum but the weapons, enemies, graphics AND PHYSICS will blow your fucking mind off. The STAKEGUN is one of the best weapons in a FPS game ever, right there with Gravity Gun.

Lacks intensity, though. Felt like an old-school game designed by committee or some shit.

If I didn't just buy Jedi Academy, I would really consider that Star Wars pack.  $10 for the Jedi Knight pack, Battlefront 2, Galaxy, Republic Commando, and Star Fighter.

People say it's a mistake since it says $25 on the page.

It says I don't know my password, and when I asked it to send my password to my e-mail account - the powers that be did not. I have to sign up for some kind of Steam Support account to resolve the matter, which I'm sure is problem #54435956963560356 for their support people.

I also wish I could change my account name. It is the e-mail I signed up for Steam with back in 2003 (when I was high in anticipation of Half-Life 2!), but I stopped using that e-mail account ages ago.

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Battlestations: Pacific
Battlestations: Midway
Conflict: Denied Ops
Deus Ex: GotY Edition
Deux Ex: Invisible War
Flora's Fruit Farm
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Hitman: Blood Money
Hitman: Codename 47
Infernal
Just Cause
Kane and Lynch: Dead Men
Mini Ninjas
Project Snowblind
Rogue Trooper
Shellshock 2: Blood Trails
Thief: Deadly Shadows

I got it.  I got kicked from a server due to some Punkbuster bullshit and haven't tried to play since.
It finally downloaded and installed and it probably took me at least a half hour to get the ID and password bullshit through GameSpy sorted out. Once I did that, I got kicked from a game because my ping was high :piss2 . I did a filter search for servers without Punkbuster and nothing popped up :lol.

Finally for into a server and got to mess around in a way only possible in a Battlefield game. Gamespy ID is Kestastrophe if any of you homos want to play

HoI3 isn't bad anymore like it was at release, but it's still got a few open wounds, so to speak.

EU3 Complete  is the Paradox game you want to get if you are interesting in playing a Paradox game. Three years and three expansion packs have made that game something that rivals the all-time strategy gaming greats.

Rest of today's stuff is totally meh, I agree. Just an FYI, Zombie Driver isn't even worth the $2.50.

Good to know. I could have sworn I already had a copy of vanilla EU3 around here somewhere, but I'm not seeing it. Looks like it's $15 until the end of the sale. I'll hold out hope for a daily deal on EU3 Complete.

It's really, really repetitive. The giant bomb first look nailed it-it's basically ramming zombies and doing the same thing over and over again. There are better time-wasters on the PC , IMO.

That being said, it does make me think that someone could have some real success making a "throwback" indie GTA-style game for the PC. The controls and perspective of Zombie Driver don't feel old or cranky at all.

Zombie Driver would be a lot more fun with they actually gave you a decent amount of weapons, but instead you get hardly any and have to just run over zombies for the most part.

Good morning, Sho Nuff

I predict that I will still buy some cheap ass games despite not even owning a gaming PC. Because

At Christmastime it's hard,
but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window,
and it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them
instead of you

Prey is one of the few games that's not Valve's that you can register on Steam.

Prey was originally exclusive to some other short-lived digital distribution service that I can't even remember the name of, and when they went belly-up, 2K signed a deal with Valve to allow people that bought Prey from the other service to download the game from the Steam. Instead of trying to figure out some way that only DD customers could register their copies on Steam, they just let you register any CD-Key.

you guys should've jumped on that THQ complete pack for $50 on Black Friday, like I did :smug

I got that.  Same with Tomb Raider Underworld for cheap.  Usually when Steam has big sales like that, they won't repeat so soon.

and does Jade Empire at least run well on PC? I still haven't played the $2.50 copy of KOTOR I bought.

Think Jade Empire is Biowares best PC running game swaggaz, I remember the PC version was polished up and released months after the console one as a deluxe edition.

It like a year and a half later.

thanks, but watching videos of it, I remembered that I didn't like this game on the Xbox.  Don't think whatever was added on the PC would make me feel different.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I remember the load times being almost a full minute when leaving an area.

Honestly, I don't think you're missing much with Jade Empire. The combat is probably the weakest combat of any BioWare game that I've played and I don't remember much from the story.

Jade Empire has some pretty good RPGing early on, although the combat is filled with suck [and button mashing]. The last 3-4 hours are just fight-fight-fight though, which is lame.

I bought King Arthur just for the hell of it (and it seems like a more linear/setpiece total war style game that's NOT made by CA). Will play tonight and let people know if it is trash at first glance.

I remember watching a friend play JE on the Xbox and it didn't seem too jerky or anything. I played it on the PC with an 8800GTS and it cleaved through the game like butter (and it's not a bad game, but not a good one either).

Yeah I read that. Made me even more interested, as some of the people who were saying that also said that you get your ass handed to you in Total War if you don't have a proper plan, which is of course laughable.

Yeah, I went back and forth for a while, and decided to get a 5770 now and a second in the spring to Crossfire (when they drop to about $120-140). That'll take me to supra-5850 levels for about the same cost, plus I get to enjoy full-spec games in the meantime :D

My desktop has an old CPU, but I should be getting better performance than I am on the low setting.  The CPU is an old AMD 64x2 3800+, but I've got an 8800GTS hooked up.  On low it jumps all over the place, sometimes from 60 FPS into the low 20s, and it's really obvious when the HDD is being accessed.  I don't know what the problem could be, Borderlands runs great on medium and that just came out.  I should have just DLed it to the RoG laptop.

It's a nice, violent time-waster, and the devs have stuck by it since it's release several months ago with about a dozen fixes and improvements, so that's a positive too.

Nah, I always play strategy and hack 'n slash on the PC, it's just that since I went to Windows 7 earlier this year, Steam stopped being stable. So I unstalled it. (And apparently my account got hijacked.) Now that I have a stable copy of Steam, and Team Fortress 2 appears to run without a hitch, I'll probably be on more often.

That said, as I even told Frag last night, most of my heavy gaming will still be on the Xbox 360. It's too accessible and my friend list resides there. Even the PC elite have Gamertags. But it'll be nice to log a few hours on to Torchlight, Civ4, Titan Quest, etc.

To put that 9.9 in perspective, I remember when I was one of the people that got to play Jade Empire behind-closed-doors, that BioWare did an excellent job of subtly softening the media up. They served us beer of our choice, brought us h'ourderves, gave us free swag, etc. I don't even really remember what I played, but I do remember that I had a great time. I gather that is how it was for most members of the media.

This.

They put all this shit into the combat system with "harmonic combos" and stuff and all you had to do to defeat any and every encounter was button mash. It was fundamentally broken.

Not to mention coming right on the heels of Kotor and Kotor 2, enough was enough.

That sucks. It runs like butter on my laptop, everything all maxed out and in native resolution. I think I take a slight hit where there are FORTY ENEMIES on screen at once and I'm launching crazy magick shit, but it's a pretty smooth playing experience.

But just Civ4 is a lot of really good content, and honestly Civ4 Warlords and Colonization are much less interesting releases than Civ4 is. The only thing that's really worth getting is Beyond the Sword, and even that isn't a big deal until you go totally gay4civ.

Real talk, don't buy Monkey Island, emulate it with SCUMM VM. More video options, plus you can install a 1GB soundfont, opening a wormhole in time and space to make 1990-era Roland MT-32 owners cry. (Also, personal opinion time, but MI is at the bottom of the SCUMM hierarchy - I'd recommend Indy 4 (Fate of Atlantis) or Day of the Tentacle as a good entry point)

The Telltale everything pack is pretty good, 'cept I already own Sam n Max S1+S2 and Strong Bad S1. The formula can get a bit repetitive, though, especially with that many games at once.

Ehh... you could eat a Big Mac w/Fries for that and it would be a better deal TBH.

$5 sucks for a gussied up version of a game everyone likes ???

Jade Empire is pretty engrossing.  The gameplay is 'press butan 2 win' and the story is typical Bioware tripe, but I can't stop playing. :(

Not Popcap, but my wife wanted Luxor 3, and it was better than expected. Zuma ripoff with a few varieties of goals...with a touch of puzzle bobble thrown in every so often.

It's only $0.99!

It looks atrocious :yuck but YMMV. I would replay the old DOS MI instead.

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2102/ <-- this is a better deal.

The only thing about that pack is the game has this filter applied to them like when you use lame filters on SNES emus.  Smooths them out but at the same time they lose their pixel charm imo.  I paid my $5 back months ago, but if I every want to replay these games I will do so off my originals in full pixel glory.

It's not a bad game by any means, and I'd probably actually recommend it to someone who likes this sort of thing. It's just not my thing-I prefer more conversational/environmental sort of things rather than inventory combine shenanigans.

It's sort of like, say, asking an xbox bro shooter player to play X3 Terran Conflict or something.

I'd bite on the Crysis pack but I already own Warhead from a $10 Best Buy deal months ago.  I'll wait for a cheap deal on Crysis by itself.

I've got an unopened GOTY Fallout 3 sitting on the shelf which I picked up for $25 a few weeks ago, if they do a daily deal that comes close to that I'll flip the one I have on Ebay just for the convenience (I don't see them doing it, though).

Is there just one more day of daily deals, or are they gonna run those on the weekend as well?

It's a good game. At least the single player bit is. It's an open world fps shooter so if you like that style of shooter you will like it. If you don't, you won't.

It's very buggy though. Even after the patches when I played it, I had a lot of broken things happen where I had to go online to get a solution for some bug that had come up.

Even if the graphics were horrible it'd be right behind Half-life 2 as one of the best modern FPS games.  The gameplay is really, really good.  Great pacing, fun sci-fi story, fantastic setpieces and yeah on top of that it looks amazing.

A++, would play again.

I really liked it for the actual game.  First time I played it was on my old PC with everything on low and it was still fun.  It plays differently than most shooters in that they give you a bunch of powers (cloak, super speed, strength, armor) and they let you take on every combat scenario the way you want.  That is the style of shooter I like most so it is one of my favorite FPS of recent years.  Warhead is a bit more of a standard linear shooter.

btw, if you do get Crysis, there are some tweaks that you can do to make the game look and run better.
Title: Re: Steam Holiday Deal thread (Crysis + Warhead for $13.59)

Crysis is pretty awesome. The AI is good to excellent, gunplay is great and the whole nanosuit thing adds tons to the open ended battle format. There are some less than brilliant bits, but the brunt of the game is pure class.

Honestly, at least judging by message board banter, the people blabbing the most about its incredible graphics and tech demo quality seem to be console fanboys of any sort using it as a neutral ace to diminish the value of whatever console exclusive that is currently being hyped. Most people I know who have played it call it a good game first, and tech demonstration a distant second.

By the way, I think calling it open world is pushing it. Far Cry 2, that's truly open. Crysis just gives you lots of room and plenty of paths to reach a point or complete an objective.

I didn't mind the linear levels, the combat itself is plenty good enough to support linearity. I absolutely hated the flight sequence, though. It sort of went downhill after the big tank offensive scenario, and it never recovered fully.

That tank offensive was alright, because I realized a few minutes in that hey, this is Crysis. So I jumped out of the tank, speed-boosted my way up to some hill, engaged cloak and took out enemy encampments all by myself, sans any vehicles.

Yup, game is awesome.

Shattered Horizons is pretty awesome even if it is fairly one note.  Turning off your suit and gently floating to an enemy for a surprise melee attack is awesome.

I really like how you have one multipurpose gun.  Some games these days have so many guns just for the sake of it.  Compare Halo 1 to Halo 3 weapons and you have multiple weapons that serve the same purpose.

I was wondering why Shattered Horizons was running a bit choppy at balanced settings (hovering between 30-60 fps, mostly at 45-ish) and I checked the steam page to see the requirements.

ffs...this and the divinity 2 demo make it seem like I need a quad core cpu.

at least it runs good enough and the only thing awful are the shadowed on balanced mode.  Shadows are usually the first thing I turn down when the game isn't running too great, but one notch down from the top and they are hideous.  It's like they're dithered when they end.

Sam n Max is both seasons? I'd pick that up if you have any interest in Telltale adventure games; better deal than the "complete" pack

Also, that DMC4 "deal" is embarassing

Why is DMC4 still so expensive? Even a DMC quadrilogy pack priced liked that would be too much.

Shame about DMC4.  I love that game and I'd like to play the PC version with the new additions someday.  But I'll wait until next years sale where it's $5.

How is Trials 2 compared to Trials HD XBLA?

Sucks, but it's $2.50 so you can't complain to much.

Give more details.  Is it mainly the same tracks?  Even $2.50 is pointless if the tracks are the same.  But if it's dozens of new tracks for $2.50 then it's a great deal.  Plus aren't there hundreds of user levels?

The game lacks the polish of Trials HD.  The tracks are different, but the physics feel floatier and the keyboard controls are not nearly as precise as the 360's triggers.  It probably comes down to personal preference, but I hate Trials 2 and adore Trials HD.  Like I said, for $2.50 there is next to no risk even if you hate it.

The physics in Trials 2 are terrible.  It's like MOON GRAVITY.  Also watching the replays of Trials 2 vs. the replays of Trials HD really shows the difference.  In Trials 2 the replays are going very slow, conquering one obstacle at a time almost like a puzzle game.  In Trials HD the replays are blazing speed through the tracks while maintaining balance and survival.

Still Trials 2 is kind of addicting like HD so for $2.50 it's fun.

FYI Bebpo, I got an email saying that my purchase had been declined.  I just tried again and it worked fine.

Same thing just happened to me.  Works now, yay.

Loom is really easy, it doesn't really have an inventory in the traditional sense, just a couple of spells that you use to effect the enviroment. The Indy games aren't too bad. The Dig has some OMGWTF puzzles, though. I'd play Loom first, it's fun and you can beat it in about 3 or 4 hours first time.

Indy 4 is pretty accessible, even if a few of the puzzles are inventory nightmare ("use the MAYONNAISE on the STATUE" is synonymous with inane adventure game puzzle design). I'd give it a try and not be afraid to FAQ when you get stuck. Maybe you can use INDY4.UHS (http://www.uhs-hints.com/uhsweb/indy4.php) :hyper

I'm starting to get the hang of Trials 2 physics.  Still don't like them, but at least I've cleared the easy levels and am working my way through medium.  It's no HD but it gives me new levels to play with so I'm still addicted.  They should port Trials HD to PC since the X360 file sharing is useless and on PC we'd actually get a thousand really good levels to play.

It's one of those "multiplayer ruins single player" games.  The main campaign is forced coop so if you are playing offline half your units are controlled by the cpu and you can only give them general orders, not direct control.  The missions are also fairly short.

otoh the game looks pretty, the fmv stuff is great and I hear the multiplayer is fun.

Yes, there is a lot of combat but the game is still a platformer.  The game is awesome.  It's unique in that you have three characters you switch between.  Unlike Lost Vikings, you can actually get through most of the game using a single character, or use their skill together by switching between them (or if playing co-op, at the same time).

Morrowind back in '02 was fuck awesome and it's one of those dozen or so games that I've played in my life that really opened my eyes to the posibilities of what videogames could deliver, but even with it being modded to all hell and back, I find it next to impossible to play it today.  There's just too many unforgiving problems with the game.

I'd love one of these days for Bethesda to make a complete (and competent) remake of Morrowind.  I don't want it to play like fucking ass backwards Oblivion just a much more refined version of Morrowind.  I know that's all pie in the sky dreaming 'cause it'll never happen but if for some reason the earth split in two and that game was actually released, I'd be front and center with a fistfull of cash ready to hand it over to them.

Most of the steam deals were for things I had already played, or things I had no interest in playing.

In retrospect the two things I would have gotten were Left for Dead the original (not overly a fan of that series but for $7 bucks I'd play it) and Burnout Paradise but I already own that one on the 360.

Somebody mentioned it earlier but I kind of wanted Sacred 2. That's a game I really want to play badly since I loved the original but not at full price.

The biggest difference is that Lost Vikings requires you to use the different characters/abilities together while Trine just gives you a lot of options, and the game can be really easy if you abuse them.  The Lost Viking games are better for being more puzzels but I still really liked Trine.

I have an unopened copy of that I got a couple of weeks ago for $20. If you (or anyone else here) wants to do Last Stand co-op or campaign co-op let me know.

Pretty sure I'm going to get the $25 Ubisoft WW2 pack and sell of my physical copies of IL-2 1946, Brothers in Arms:HH, and Silent Hunter 3/4 to pay for it. Blazing Angels 1/2 may be bad but I've proven time and time again I'll play anything with joystick support and a cockpit view.

I am interested in both Europa Universalis III and Majesty 2, but I can only get one. Hmmmmm.....

I tried the demo for AI Wars. I liked what it was doing, but just going through the tutorials it seems like a game that you have to sink alot of time into to get a handle on it. Also, I didn't care for some of the controls as compared to Sins (for example, when zooming in it is centered around the middle of the screen and not on mouse cursor). I'll pick it up some other time

Well, all done then

I spent $57.14 on this sale, over double what I intended to spend (although I sold a few things on ebay to make up the difference)

the haul:

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
Commandos Double Pack
Morrowind Game of the Year
Crysis Complete
Sid Meier's Civilization IV: The Complete Edition
Pacific Storm + Pacific Storm: Allies
Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
Rome: Total War Gold
Alpha Prime
Ghost Master

Counting expansions, that's 19 games altogether I'll probably never finish

I still think I might rent Bad Company 2 on 360 but it depends on how the PC version turns out.  The problem with waiting for multiplayer games is that the community is strongest when it's released, though, a sale does help rebuild it.

Now that the daily sales are behind us, any "must grab" titles at only 50-66% off? ;)

Dawn of Discovery is pretty damn attractive at even $25. Yeah, pricey for a Steam release but that game is very, very good. I'm still debating on double-dipping for the Steam version because I have zero confidence that Ubi will release the expansion stateside in any other way and I can always goozex my current boxed copy. The only debbie downer is that the steam release still has DRM even though they have removed the max activation limit of 3 in a recent patch (though I'm not sure if that still holds for the Steam version too).

As a bonus, really pretty and playable by mortals.

Heroes of Might and Magic V: Tribes of the East is standalone, a huge improvement over the first two Heroes V releases, and has all of the single player maps w/ dialgue of the original H5 release and Hammers of Fate (the first xpac) available for free download  here (http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/original_maps.shtml) .

I bought all this stuff on Steam and will still probably waste the day away finding new ways to fail on iccup and playing section 8 (which I didn't even get on steam!) lolz.

BTW, I think Bad Company PC is going to have a very strong following. It's been ages since the PC has had a real Battlefield game and the clans and server hosts really got burned by MW2 and will be looking for new hotness.

I really want Batman AA for $33, but that Eidos pack for $50 is looking good, but I'd most likely never play any of those games

this last day is fucking terrible.

  $14.99  $12.99 USD

That's a Capcom level discount, especially considering it was $1.50 two weeks ago.

Should I buy Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon II platinum for $3.34?  I like trains.  I am curious about a game about trains.  $3.34 seems cheaper than the pack with the newer 3d one for $16.
Also sell me on why I should buy Sid Meier's Pirates for almost $7?  I like Pirates.  But only $3 or so off the normal price just seems like a crappy deal.

They should just combined the series and have Sid Meier's Pirates & Trains for $10.  Would be easier to swallow.

I never played Trains and only the console and PSP versions of Pirates.  If Pirates is as good as the versions I've played, then yes.  Game is super addictive.

Today's sales bombed pretty hard. Except for L4D2, it looks like nobody wanted a second crack at this stuff.

One reason why L4D2 and MW2 showed up a lot is because both games register on steam even if you bought the retail copy.  Could have been gifts recently opened and registered.

Anyone who didn't buy them on the first day wasn't going to buy them later, as I doubt anyone would have expected them to go on sale again.

They should have had a last day sale, plus a sale on the "top 5 sellers" from the sale period.

Agreed on the need for an all-new last day sale but not so sure on the 'top 5 sellers' idea. Wouldn't that lead to folks waiting until the last day to buy the top selling stuff?  As a retailer, you never want to do anything that encourages customers to hold off on buying, especially on what are already your top selling items.

Maybe I should get it too.

Zero Hero and I were playing Civ tonight - Beyond the Sword specifically - and it is pretty addicting online. Anyone game for joining us for a fun, laidback sandbox type multi-style game after we learn the ropes?

It was just an idea for bringing back deals - have a new day plus the top 5 sellers from the daily sales so far. So you could buy it earlier on sale, or if you missed it and it sold well you get another chance to buy it.

Still tossing ( :teehee ) over the idea of the Eidos pack just to get Batman AA...

Final tally for me:

Torchlight
Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes Opposing Front
Time Gentlemen, Please!
Been there, Dan that
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Unreal Deal Pack - Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament, Unreal II, Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal Tournament III
The Witcher EE
Freedom Force
Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl
Titan Quest
Titan Quest: Immortal Throne

Pretty happy with that lot. Didn't spend more than $10 or so per game (the Witcher might have been $13) and didn't buy anything I haven't heard great things about here.

I played some Shattered Horizon today and it's really...wow...overwhelming. It's not like in, say, Team Fortress 2 where you really only have to worry about people in front of you and MAYBE somebody behind you. In SH though, you've got people shooting at you from every possible angle and the levels are insanely massive so you can be sniped from hundreds of feet away. It's insane. But...it's really fun!

I bought it hoping it will work on XP; I never got it to run on Win2K/98 back when it came out. Looking back on it, it's amazing how many games I bought for PC just never worked. Such a fucking crapshoot.
