This game throws the complexity of normal controls that Nintendo aimed to cure with the Wii into a long game that requires long play sessions and a lot of fine tuned aiming, rotating of that damn 3D map, and lots reaching down for the 1 and 2 buttons. I just played an hour and I was in pain trying to find a save point (and damn near nauseous) after fighting that damn wasp hive boss. Don't even get me started on how hard it is to simply turn around...by the time you're facing the right way, the enemy has already strafed you. Why the hell was this game necessary? These controls work, as in, they won't get you killed, but Retro was too busy thinking about what they could do instead of what they should do. Smart of them to remove gamecube controls though, so ninthings don't remember how they were completely better in every respect.
Wii can't do FPS controls. Fact.

Correction: You suck at Wii games.

I dont think its restricted to just Metroid... Wii controls are unusuable in most situations

If The Conduit is considered the gold standard of Wii controls, then you are correct.

nah, i'm pretty sure people take issue with wii controls on a regular basis. unless it's a waggle fest.

playing 3 now and I find them just fine.

I had no issues with Metroid Prime 3

for all the customization The Conduit had, the controls never felt right, or even as good as games with far fewer settings like MP3. The monkey war game in super monkey ball had better first person shooter controls than The Conduit. Link's Crossbow Training had better controls. The only thing that didn't was Red Steel.

Game controls great to me. Tons better than it did on the Gamecube. I stopped playing it back then because the GCN controller was such trash for the game. Everything is so much easier. Aiming, scanning, the map, platforming. I'm loving it.
-
The Grudge has the worst controls. Tried to play it the other night, but the controls are just horrible. Definitely worst controls of the generation.

I haven't played the remakes, so I'm wondering: are the controls the same across the three games? Like you, I found Corruption controls to be fine
-
I played the first and third and thought they both controlled fine. I thought the first game had tighter controls though. This game isn't just about shooting the enemy though, it's about shooting them in the right spot (usually the ass of course).
-
B = jump
+ brings up the weapon select
- brings up the visor select
1 = map
2 = start menu
Z = lock on
C = morph ball
I'm still on the first game so I don't know if the controls are the same across the board. I would imagine they would be tho

It's humorous that an entire company placed their future on a gimmick controller.

well, the wrong gimmick controller.

You mean Sony? I heard that F5 originally wanted to just make the motion controls optional.

Correction: Wii sucks at games.

I brought my Wii over to my in-laws' place the other day, and left it with them indefinitely. I feel SOOOOO much better without that thing in the house.

Thankfully for Nintendo, it paid off.

Um, are you one the advanced setting? That's the good control preset. Its funny you mention the first war hive boss. Because that battle was designed around lock on and its a pain to do it with free aim. Thats really the only problem with the compilation, the first two games weren't necessarily designed with free aim in mind, but rather locking on and using the boost sidestep.
-
Having free aim is awesome tho. You lock onto a target, move behind some cover, charge the wave beam then shoot over to the right or left and it'll go out around cover to hit your target. Thats how I kill all those annoying sentry turrets.
-
just because you EB guys are chronically fiddling with your nethers doesn't mean you can't keep your dominant hand steady for a second. a still hand solves almost all of the perceived "Wii FPS" problems.

yes, that fight pretty much killed my will to play the first two. I couldn't believe how much of a pain in the ass that fight was. I didn't get killed but it took forever.

steady for hours you mean. you don't play metroid in small bursts.

Until I get an SDTV as the primary television in my house, Sho Nuff will not be buying a Wii
-
I probably wouldn't have bought one if it weren't so easy to hack. that and NSMB!!!

Metroid Prime is a damn near perfect game, so any modification to how it plays or looks is bound to be a step back. You're right, though, the Wii controls are shockingly poor.
-
yeah, i like the controls and think they work fine
i never played the original gc games, though

I could never finish the first two Prime games, as alot of my problems were with the controls, but I beat and enjoyed Corruption. I stopped playing the first Prime at the very bossfight that people are talking about, the hive boss where you have to shoot the mirrors
-
It takes a good hour or so to get used to the lock-on controls. Once you do, you can do real subtle aiming and jumping and it just kind of flows together but yeah, you need to be a masochist for at least an hour before that.
-
I felt like I was used to the controls and then the game threw me into a situation where they plain didn't work.

i could see where that fight would be extremely frustrating with the older control scheme, just from what i'd read and heard about it
prole said it drove him up the wall
-
i do hate the half-pipe stuff, though
i can never get my timing right, so i sit there like an idiot for ten minutes rocking back and forth
-
Slime is good with his wrists. Plays with his joystick, and his waggle wand.

maybe the perspective is screwing up your sense of depth or something (I know that that's what made a lot of people hate the platforming). this game has an insane learning curve for almost everything that you do really.

The original games didn't control like (modern) FPS games like the Wii versions do. Like, the left analog stick was forward, back, and turning. You couldn't strafe unless you locked on, and you couldn't move while free aiming (more importantly, aiming up and down).
-
ugh

and yet, this is apparently better than the wii controls :lol

yes, because you can turn around faster and without contorting yourself/worrying about the cursor going off screen.

and now were back to you just plain sucking at Wii game controls. IR control is pretty awesome once you get used to it.

why would you have to worry about that? Samus begins to turn when you move the cursor like a few inches in either direction. theres no reason the cursor should be getting near the edge when turning. was there a quick turn in GCN Prime like in GCN Resi4?
sounds like you're just not used to them and won't let yourself get used to them.
would the controls work for a standard FPS? Hell no. thats why The Conduit probs sucks. But it works great in Prime.

you get strafed by shit and need to backtrack, which requires turning around. Maybe I'm used to having a lot of control over sensitivity, but lets put it this way-- analogs are a compromise with mouse + keyboard, wii controls seem to be a compromise with analog sticks. I can turn faster with analog sticks. but it seems like they have to limit sensitivity of the wii remote out of necessity...since using it with this game isn't...ahem...intuitive. I don't want to wait forever (relatively speaking) for samus to turn around, because I do that a lot in the game, since it isn't always obvious where to go. If there's really no control over turn speed, I must be going off screen out of impatience :lol
-
yeah I don't know what else to say. i literally stopped playing GCN Prime because it was so slow and sluggish and a pain in the ass to control. I have literally no problems here that I did back then. the controls took about a half hour to get used to for me but now they are completely natural and i wouldn't want to go back to the GCN controller after this.
-
You do realise that they were going for a different control setup to the KB&M right? That is why MP1 had pretty bad controls too. Its got nothing to do with the controller.
-
I believe the defense was "It's a First Person Adventure game, not a First Person Shooter"
and the Gamecube controls were taken from the Dreamcast game Maken X. I don't know if Retro admitted that was the source yet, but yeah, both games have the same controls (Maken X is a first person brawler, though)
