I'm almost done with Etrian Odyssey 2 and I forget how much I loved playing old school, kick you in the teeth RPGs. What rpgs--eastern, western, strategy, fit a similar mold?
-
try that demon's soul game.

The Dark Spire

I've been looking to pick up Devil Survivor. What did you think of what you played, Oscar? I saw that you started a game on backloggery. I know that it was pretty well received on GAF too.
-
Devil Survivor is awesome. I dont think its brutally hard though.
-
Nocturne if you go in without a guide or any knowledge about the game.
-
Obligatory

God damn I love this game

King's Bounty
-
The Wizardry games on PC are brutally hard. Phantasy Star 1 and 2 as well. Also Dragon Warrior 2.
-
:bow Phantasy Star 2 :bow2
Also, Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter.
-
FFXIII >:(
Over on gaf shouta said he thought it was harder than Nocturne on Hard. I dunno about that. But it's definitely on par with Nocturne on normal at least.
-
FFXIII
come now, provide at what HOUR this becomes hard as it was devoid of any challenge around chapter 5 where i decided enough was enough. :D
I'm not doubting it becomes hard later on, i found it hard keeping my eyes open for a start, and that's challenge enough! ;)
Another vote for Dark Spire.
Ch.11 on when the game actually begins. The last 5 hours of the story and the last 10-15 hours of the optional bosses are nothing but non-stop frustrating cheap bullshit. Soured me on the game quite a bit in the end.

can i toot my own horn?

otherwise i'd say nocturne is the most sensible choice out of this thread

I don't know what's going on in that Last Remnant video but it looks fun.

Ooh, sounds like Azure Dreams and the Mystery Dungeon games. Will peep

King's Bounty is pretty hard on the PC, imo.

Obligatory

finally got around to playing this now. i love it. i am NOT reading anything about it anywhere because i don't want any* of it ruined.
*any is equal to any of the badly voice acted cutscenes or super awesome sidequests.
-

you should read how to level up properly because it's probably the most backwards and unintuitive system i've ever seen in an rpg.
-
Not really~
Its no different from other Kawazu games.
-
I wouldn't have a problem with the way leveling works if the game ever, you know, explained it, since it's fairly backwards. I'm just saying if I knew about it going in I probably would have liked the game a lot more.
-
SaGa Frontier 2 is also extremely difficult.
-
I stand by what I said, you play one Kawazu you play them all. I can understand if you havent though since they are garbage.
-
Saga Frontier 2 I found to be pretty easy. I hated SGF1 but I enjoyed 2. Battle system is fairly mediocre, though.
-
BoF: Dragon Quarter is unique and totally ball busting
