He's back brother. And he's here to chew bubble gum and kick ass and he's all out of bubblegum!

It's a double edge sword. The fans know what's happened to me over the past couple of years. I lost my family. I pretty much got devastated financially and the fans know that I've had some hard times - and that's the nature of loyal fans. They want to see the people that they love and believe in get back on their feet. That's part of it. And the other part of it is that the fans are sick of this monopoly. They're sick of contrived programming. They're sick of seeing Shawn Michaels and Triple H run around like a couple of degenerates and act goofy and, you know, doing the whole Hornswoggle thing. The fans are tired of that weak programming.

I'm mainly teasing about how well a show they will put on but anything is better than WWE at this point. They need real competition. Both products are pretty unwatchable at the moment but you need that competition to at least get them trying again.

As long as he keeps cashing big Hollywood checks which will likely be forever he'll never return sadly. Being a Hollywood Star with more money and less work than a wrestler is an easy choice. As long as he is saving it of course.

I used to LOVE wrestling. late 90's wrestling was the shit. It was pure entertainment and enjoyable on a week to week basis. Everyone talked about it, and both shows (WCW and WWF) continued to push themselves time and time again and do even more crazy stuff.

Now it's so boring. The plotlines are TERRIBLE. They are not fun, they are not hilarious, I don't want to watch the same feud for MONTHS.

I love wrestling and still do, but when both TNA and WWE bore me to death I'm not going to watch.

But I'm watching this. :hyper

Wrestling has always been a cyclical product that has up stretches followed by long down stretches. What happened this time though was that the stars like the Rock and Stone Cold who would have softened the down stretches left and that's like if Hogan and Flair just suddenly stopped wrestling at the height of their popularity. Then when the WWE won the war, there was no reason to keep the product entertaining or even try. If you know the dedicated audience at least will watch no matter what and you have no competitor, then why try to reach anybody else.

You're right. I just want to watch some competitive wrestling again. I remember back in the old days, I would flip between WWF and WCW every few minutes. Sometimes they'd trash the other channel, and even in some cases (like Mankind winning the Championship belt at WWF) the competition outright tells the result of the event just to spite the other competition. :lol

But Hulk coming to TNA or Bret coming WWF won't change a thing. They still have the same crappy writers who make boring plotlines and feuds, and now that WWE is PG, it'll never get back to the mayhem it had during the Attitude era.

The Miz is the Intercontinental Champ.  I never saw him on the Real World, but there's nothing about him (now) as a pro wrestler to mock for that.  He's one of the better young heels out there.  He was part of a tag team with Tough Enough winner John Morrison, and both of them have improved tremendously from when they started.

Kofi's gotten better ever since they gave him a push and he dropped the "Jamaica, mon" gimmick.  Wrasslin' sites say he's in the doghouse for some shit he did backstage though.

RAW is usually always boring as fuck.  I barely watch whole shows and prefer to wait to download/watch them on Youtube so I can see the five minutes out of the two hour show that are decent or sometimes actually good.  ECW is much better, but I never watch it.  Never watch Smackdown! either.

Smackdown >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Raw in terms of wrestling and talent. Sometimes. I was watching last summer and Smackdown was infinitely more entertaining than Raw on a week to week basis on average. Raw is full of bullshit, Smackdown is where the awesome wrestling goes, at least imo. But not awesome enough for me to watch every damn week. But I still flip to it on occasions.

What belt does Miz have?

The same one that Ricky the Dragon Steamboat once had. So he's just as good!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WWE_United_States_Champions

He has essentially the intercontinental champion version of the belt for Smackdown. It's the mid card belt they give to people in the hopes of making them main eventers one day.

You're right. I just want to watch some competitive wrestling again.

Even if hell froze over and TNA did some amazing stuff (I predict it's Hogan coming out and making some lame speech, plus some ex-WWE guys like Mr. Kennedy debut), it doesn't matter because TNA just doesn't have the same audience numbers and popularity that WCW did (before they started beating the WWF), plus this Monday show is currently a one-time thing.  If they do well, the Spike TV prez said he'd think about giving them one Monday a month, and then after that, maybe switching to live on Mondays if they did well.  I rarely watch TNA because it's also total garbage most of the time, but I think it would help if they dump Vince Russo and get someone else as head of creative.  The problem is that this role seems to be going to Hogan, and...yeah.   :-\

Quote

Yep.  That's why what TNA really needs to do is have the type of wrestling matches and storylines that the WWE can't do because of their PG rating.  BTW, supposedly the switch to PG was the result of John Cena campaigning HARD for the change.  Absolutely hilarious if (there's any truth to it) true...have you ever heard his rap album?   :lol

Another thing is that with WWE's current target audience, nobody knows who the fuck Bret Hart even IS.   :lol

If TNA were to somehow do well enough to be competition for the WWE, they'd drop the PG shit in a hurry.  Too bad that will never happen.

The current WWE "product" (I love these stupid wrasslin' terms) is pretty much aimed at younger kids, and they seem to love it.  I am in agreement with you...there has yet to be anyone who has come along and even come close to being the next Stonecold or Rock.

Cena was fine for a stretch and can be fine at times. The problem was they perma-glued the belt to him and eliminated the edgy part of his character. They've done a horrible job of breaking new stars in recent years. Or at least getting them to the level of prior stars in years past.

No. Not at all. They're all boring.

Is it the writers or are the wrestlers themselves just not interesting or is it both?

Then again, they managed to make two of my favorite wrestlers, Kane and Undertaker into completely boring slobs I don't give a shit about.

Whenever The Rock came on, back in the Attitude era, I'd pay attention; he was hilarious, he had charisma, you couldn't help but love him. Now whenver I watch the (very rare) episode of Raw or Impact, I'm barely paying attention whether it's one of my favorite wrestlers (Mick Foley, Sting;etc) or young blood. It's not because I don't like wrestling anymore either.

The writing isn't nearly as entertaining.

I miss when they'd do over the top crap like wrestle in barb wired cages or bury people alive or ram giant trucks into the ring and guzzle 100 beers in just a few seconds.

They occasionally pull off a funny skit or do something humorous for a bit with somebody but no they don't have any consistently funny people like the old days. There is no Roddy Pipper, The Rock, Dusty Rhodes, or Ric Flair shit talkers that just can always deliver the goods. It's sad.

Santino is fucking terrible since they turned him face.

RAW is generally terrible, ECW is hilariously bad ( :bow TIFFANY :bow2), and Smackdown is good but not worth going out of your way for. TNA overall is pretty terrible but they sometimes have good wrestling but nothing makes sense.

One of the last funny things I remember them doing was the King Booker character before he left. It was so cheesey and stupid and weird and juvenille that it crossed back over into being funny like the 80's stuff.

Goldust rarely has a part in raw anymore.

That's because he's been on ECW for months.

They actually got him in a good feud with Sheamus with Goldust wrestling and acting much better than he has for a long time.  But then they ended that, had Sheamus feud with Shelton Benjamin, quickly ended that, and moved Sheamus to RAW.

I doubt I could find it, but there's an awesome Foley promo where he's talking about a steel cage match that's him, Nation era Rock and Ken Shamrock; Foley talks about chocolate flavored testes as a breakfast cereal or something.  Foley was awesome.

It's like night and day between old and new wrestling.

It really is.  I even missed out on a lot of the big stuff that happened -didn't watch wrasslin' from around '94 or '95 until 2000- but so much stuff, even as crappy as a lot of it was, was 100 times better at the beginning of the last decade than it has become.

Occasionally they just do a very good job of building up a storyline and delivering a payoff. One I remeber a number of years ago was Kane was in love with Torrie and she was cheating on him with Xpac or something. So they strung it along for weeks and then finally had a showdown and the crowd was pumped. You rarely get good crowd "pops" anymore like you did when Hogan, or the Rock, or Stone Cold were at the top of their popularity. The crowd always seems subdued now by comparison.

Used to be into wrestling back in 1998-2000, but ever since the "Attitude" era ended, it just hasn't been the same. What little I've seen of more recent wrestling has been horrible, I miss the era of the nWo, ECW, The Rock, DX, Austin... now the closest I get to following wrestling is when I occasionally run into Foley around town.

I could see him having an on air role for that amount of time like as a personality, or as a GM or something but not as a wrestler. He had to end his career because of a concussion and then he had a stroke. Full on real wrestling seems beyond him at this point, but we'll see I guess.

Wrestling used to be spectacular when every star wrestler wasn't a goddamn ripped, GQ cover caricature. What happened to all the charasmatic "blue collar" wrestlers like George "The Animal" Steele, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Ole Anderson, The Freebirds, Greg Valentine, and Ricky Steamboat? Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mick Foley were awesome tokens from a great era of wrestling.

I'm not saying it's going to produce good fights (or reduce ego's). I'm saying it shows they are being serious at least. I'd prefer Flair didn't wrestle and was just used as a talker but he does bring credibility with him. Same as Hogan. Which is why I'm watching for tonight at least.

Oh Jesus.

This is like one big WCW reunion.

TNA has always struck me as "WCW Lite."  Now it's even closer to the old WCW.  So you have Hogan, Hall, Nash, Bischoff, Flair, and now Sting back (he'd been gone for a few months).  A bunch of over the hill guys past their primes.  Hogan comes out to NWO music but says he against that old attitude?   ???  GEE I WONDER IF A SWERVE IS COMING???!?!?   Bischoff says things are going to change.  Problem is, if all they're going to do is bring in guys who are better talkers than wrasslers, nothing is going to change, unless they want to turn TNA into the old shitty WCW.

I flipped over to RAW during a break and saw HBK walking away from Bret Hart.  Will probably keep flipping back and forth during breaks, but I think I am going to stick with the WCW reunion show TNA and just download RAW later.  I want to see what Hart does, but the bottom line is that he's a retired wrestler and won't do anything, and the rest of the show is still the same old beyond tired WWE garbage.  I've seen Kofi/Orton too many times.  Same with the tag team champ match.  ZZZZzzz.

Like right before they got bought? Yeah that suckedddd.

They started being bad a good deal before that. Basically they ran out of ideas of what to do with the NWO and Goldberg and just kept repeating the same formula and stopping elevating new talent and just let Hogan, and Nash and the lot limp their way through poor match after poor match.

He got elevated over the last couple of months.  You missed his big "moment" when they had a show at MSG, when he beat the hell out of Orton in the stands.  Hasn't done anything bigger than that since.  Also John Cena is not on RAW this week, so they have to fill the time with something.  I predict RAW's "main event" is Bret finally getting Vince to come out, and we get a bunch of talking with maybe a punch or two.  Yay.    That's why I'm going to download it...so I can skim through it and watch the 10 minutes of the show that were probably good.

I usually get all wrasslin' stuff from Xtremewrestlingtorrents.com.  You have to sign up and keep your DL/UL ratio maintained.

If you don't mind waiting a few days, all this stuff will be on Youtube.

Wow, I have to hand it to TNA...they have Styles/Angle, and WWE has...Orton/Kofi rematch #843.

TNA still has a LOT to prove; it's expected that all the new guys they brought in would just make appearances and not wrestle, but they better deliver.  I'm rooting for them right now since it's at least made wrestling feel "fresh" for the first time in like a decade.

Same.  The question now is, what happens next week?  Is Impact going back to taped on Thursdays?  A big part of tonight for me was it being live and head to head with the WWE.

I take it then that it was the "NWO" who was beating down wrestlers backstage throughout the show.  The ending was pretty predictable; wrasslin' sites already nailed it a week or two ago when they said that the plan was for the NWO to align with Hogan and Dixie Carter, and the opposing side will be Jeff Jarret and Mick Foley.  Once again, I have to bring up how stupid it is that they are using NWO theme music for Hogan, while trying to play up that he is "conflicted" on who to side with.   ::)

Surprised Bret didn't punch Vince? No surprise ending to RAW?

edit: spoke too soon!

This was predictable as hell too.   :lol  Hart is supposed to be with the WWE through 'Mania, IIRC.

-Hulk Hogan

-Sean Waltman
-Scott Hall
-Orlando Jordan
-Shannon Moore
-Ric Flair
-Jeff Hardy
-Bubba The Love Sponge (lol)
-The Nasty Boys
-Sean Morley (Val Venis)
-Sting (returned)

Did I miss someone?  There's like four guys in there who are young and in good shape.  Also I wonder why Angelina Love didn't come back.

I think it was Jim Cornette who said that in the wrestling business, seven is the magic number of years when audiences "forget" the past and you can recycle shit again.  It's been longer than that for the NWO (the WWE stint was totally different and doesn't count).

They just better focus on the younger talent and using the older guys to enhance them, not the other way around.

To be fair I think at least starting off this is the only way it will work. The only reason a lot of people probably watched tonight was because of people like Flair, Hogan, the Nwo stuff, etc. The key will somehow be integrating the old with the new so you can capture both audiences. The WCW could never consistently do it with a lot of the same people so that doesn't bode well for TNA but somebody has to do something.

too many "star" egos, fiftysomething men will hog all the face time and hold all the TNA belts within three months

WWE snaps up all the disgruntled young guys who leave, shows them some spotlight love, TNA stagnates and tanks because none of the elderlies will ever swallow their egotism long enough to actually lose a match so it's just a bunch of standing around making awkward challenges to each other

not like this

you think any of those dudes in that ring are going to let themselves get pinned by a relatively no-name kid?  they never did it in wcw, and they won't do it here.  only now it's going to be even more pathetic, because most of them look like they'd give out of breath climbing into the ring

It seems TNA Impact did a 1.5 share, which is better than expected.  This is not the first time they've gone up against the WWE before, BTW...last time their rating was like half that.  Spike TV said they would have been happy with 1.1, so they did better than expected.  Still nowhere near typical RAW numbers.

TNA iMPACT spoilers for 1/14/10:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Written by Richard Gray & Tim Capture on Jan 5, 2010 - 5:23:20 PM

TNA Wrestling taped next Thursday's edition of Impact tonight from Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. Below are exclusive taping results by myself and Tim Capture:

Xplosion:

* Consequences Creed vs. TNA Global Champion Eric Young, it wasn't announced that the title was on the line. Winner via piledriver, Eric Young.

* It's announced that Ric Flair is at the Impact Zone.

TNA Impact (Airing 1/14 on Spike TV):

* Generation Me (formerly the Young Bucks) vs. The Motor City Machine Guns. Generation Me win with a 450 and top rope moonsault.

* Kurt Angle comes out for an in-ring promo. Angle gives credit to AJ Styles for beating him and proving that winning the TNA Championship was no fluke. He says AJ was the better man last week. He says you win some and you lose some. Angle says the real winner gets that last big win and at Genesis it will be him. He says it's real, it's damn real. AJ Styles comes out and says he appreciates Angle taking the loss like a man. He says if they had a series of matches, he would have won some, Angle would have won some - but in the end, he would still be Champion. Styles says he is going to give Angle one more shot [at Genesis] but it will be his last shot of 2010. The masked man attacks AJ and takes him out. He reveals himself as Tyson Tomko.

* Angelina Love just sat down at ringside of the Impact Zone. the Beautiful People come out and embrace Angelina, all of them except Lacey Von Erich who does not. Kong and Hamada come out for a non-title tag team match. Winners via sitdown powerbomb on Madison Rayne, Awesome Kong & Hamda. Angelina comes in the ring to check on Madison, but beats everyone up and cleans house. Velvet Sky starts crying.

* Backstage, AJ Styles barges into Eric Bischoff's office looking for Hulk Hogan. Hogan is busy but Bischoff asks if he can help. AJ is upset about Tomko and says he better not touch him. Bischoff asks what he should do as World Champion? AJ wants a match with Tomko tonight. Bischoff says if he wants that revenge it's quid pro quo. Bischoff says he needs a main event and AJ needs to put the title on the line for a main event. AJ agrees which sets up the shows main event - AJ Styles defending the TNA Championship against Tomko.

* Jeremy Borash is backstage and goes into Bischoff's office. JB needs answers on Mick Foley. He doesn't blame Eric for what happened last week but needs to know where Foley is. Bischoff says it's Borash's fault because he let Foley in. He also says if Borash ever does anything like it again it'll be the last thing he does in the building.

* Beer Money, Inc. comes in and says they don't have a problem with Bischoff or Hogan but they do with their boys Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Sean Waltman. They want Nash and Hall at Genesis. Bischoff says he will think about it.

* Sean Morley comes out to ringside. His entrance video is like the old Val Venis video but he's working under his real name of Sean Morley. Morley gets on the mic and says - ladies, I'm here instead of "hello ladies". He says he worked elsewhere and had to use a stage name, but no more. Now Sean Morley is here to bring his artistry and film making skills. He says TNA was missing a film division. HE says his films will be works of art. Nothing direct-to-video but Daniels interrupts before he can finish. He has a big smile on his face and welcomes Morley and says he has a film idea to pitch. Daniels says there's an honorable hero type who meets a sleazy fast-talking type. There's some M Night Shamalan stuff, then in the end the sleaze ball gets his. Daniels then beats him up, gives him the Best Moonsault Ever and tells him to shut up. He says that Morley offends him. Daniels says he didn't work hard for scum, like Morley to come in and ruin it. He says he's going to take him out but Morley mounts a comeback and gets rid of Daniels.

* Hernandez & Matt Morgan vs. Beer Money, Inc. Rob Terry came out and attacked Hernandez. The referee called for the bell. The match ended in a no contest. Waltman, Nash and Hall come out and beat up Beer Money. TNA security and referees come out to break it up but they get beat up too. Bischoff comes out and gets things under control momentarily. Things fall apart and security gets beat up again. Bischoff tells Beer Money to be very careful what they wish for because the next round is on him.

* Bischoff comes back out and says the fans put a smile on his face. They make him happy, but the only way to be happier is to bring out three close personal friends. Out comes Nash, Hall and Waltman. Bischoff says he doesn't know what to do with them. Last week it was Foley, now it's Beer Money. Waltman thought it's what he wanted. Bischoff says no. What he wants is a match, so at Genesis it's Scott Hall and Kevin Nash vs. Beer Money, Inc.

* Desmond Wolfe b. Samoa Joe via Tower of London with The Pope on commentary. Wolfe won clean against Joe.

* A limousine just pulled up with Ric Flair in it.

* Lethal Consequences came out for a match but Bobby Lashley came out and beat them up. Kristal got on the mic and asks if they have Eric Bischoff's attention yet. She says until she gets her meeting with Hogan, Lashley will take out the entire roster, one-by-one. Team 3D come out for the match. They immediately hit 3D to end the match.

* Bubba gets on the mic and says he was in the Tokyo Dome last week wrestling in front of thousands of fans. The Japanese press asked how they felt about The Nasty Boys busting up their locker room. They didn't even know it happened but they mock the Nasty Boys and wonder where the hell they've been? They berate them, basically calling them old, fat Hogan lackeys riding his coattails. Bubba says they are going to take The Nasty Boys out.

* Jeff Jarrett busts into Hogan's office. He says he is mad at what is happening to his company. Jarrett says there is no real talent in TNA, it's always been only him. He has his lawyer with him and say he will sue. He goes on and on and Bischoff finally cuts him off. Bischoff gives Jarrett the facts that if it wasn't for Dixie Carter there would be no TNA. Bischoff explains she got her family to invest and made it what it is today. Bischoff says Jarrett needs to lace up his boots. Jarrett gets angry again and threatens Hogan. Hogan says he'll kick Jarrett's hillbilly ass and scares him off.

* Ric Flair makes his way to the ring and joins Mike Tenay and Taz at the announce table.

* Tomko vs. AJ Styles for the TNA Championship. Kurt Angle comes out to watch the match from the ramp. Winner via slop drop, AJ Styles. Tomko attacks Styles after the match but Angle makes the save. He puts his hand out for AJ to shake but AJ won't shake it.

Xplosion:

* Daffney w/Dr. Stevie vs. Tara. Tara wins the Widow's Peak.

So is Val Venis back as the true Val Venis or is he just Sean Morley?

He is using his real name (Sean Morley), but he is Val Venis in character.

I saw both shows, and it almost felt like 96-97 when I was continuously flipping between Nitro and Raw.

Scott Hall should be ashamed of himself. Even wearing a black shirt failed to conceal his revolting midsection. He shamelessly carried on like he didn't have a severe weight problem. I was going to plug in a Wii Fit quip here, but Hall would need the full blown HD version with the downloadable content and shit.

Brett Hart looked surprisingly good all things considered.

TNA wins overall, but I think RAW had the better guest. Hart > Hogan, Flair, Hardy, etc.

This is just a continuation of the Hogan-Flair "feud" that was going on in Hogan's Australian tour before he debuted with TNA.  In fact a number of people that Hogan brought in with him to TNA are from that tour.

I didn't know we have a wrestling thread!

The continuing Hoganisation of WCW - woah, that was a genuine freudian mis-type - I mean TNA is really sending it downhill.  Get these friggin' old bastards out of the ring.

The wrestling industry never learns, if we don't see them make the exact same mistakes all over again I'll be shocked beyond belief.

At least the geezers are giving the younger guys a rub this time around.  Did I hear "American Made" playing at the very end of the match, right before the Hogan beat-down?   :lol

RVD is a pretty cool acquisition.  I'm sure they'll screw it up.

Is anyone else liking Jericho in WWE?  I have never liked Jericho in the slightest but he is a totally hilarious heel and has probably become my favourite WWE wrestler (not that there's much competition).

I guess TNA is more relaxed on the puff-puff.

Jericho has been a great heel for a while now.  It's too bad he's no longer on RAW.  I barely ever watch Smackdown.
