Title: Who's buying a tablet this year?
Post by: Eel O'Brian on January 05, 2010, 06:31:04 PM
I think I might!  Apparently there will be a fuckton announced at CES.  I want one of the dirt cheap netbooky ones with touch screen, to use as a comic/ereader.

All my money is going to stocking up on beer for when T234 arrives. :punch

Seriously though, I've wanted one ever since seeing them for the first time last year, I love the idea of drawing in Photoshop or Corel with a stylus right on the screen. Just dunno if it's in the cards for me this year .

I can see a million wars on a million forums starting around this - cheap & totally functional Taiwan brand vs luxury Apple model with a few extra frills at a huge mark-up. I'm still in love with the Jesus Phone so leaning very heavily towards Apple at this point - i've been putting off buying a netbook to see what their tablet is like first.

I'm pretty anti-Apple and even I'm very curious about what they have in store for their undoubtedly overpriced tablet.

I'll buy the Apple Tablet if it's >$700.  I'm a huge macfag.

I do. And I have a train commute. And I don't have an ebook reader, which I really need to get (no more shelf space). I don't have a netbook or laptop either. So if it meets all those needs, I'll buy in at some point. I'm hoping for more like 800 bucks but who knows. I'm assuming it'll be a SSD and have a really nice color screen that's also ereader-like so it could get pricey.

My guess is definitely $800. Can't be more than their low-end MacBook.

The key of course is whether another tablet from Asia will do all the same stuff for a quarter of the price. We'll see. I have no objections to my ereader running Windows.

I thought Apple is killing off their low end Macbook soon?

I predict the Apple tablet will be $999, and I'm buying the shit out of it day one.

I might get one if it has a decent battery life, but I just got a Kindle so not totally sure.

haha, the Apple whore bought a Kindle. Shades of D-chan buying that new Mac the day before MacWorld

i really only want one for the comic/ereading and casual web browsing, the cheapest one out there would probably do both those things just fine

i already have a netbook and a laptop

if you need an all-in-one i could see where you'd want a beefier set of specs, though

the only thing I require is a screen big enough to display a full comic page legibly, so i'm not even gonna bother with any screen size under 10 inches

Are there any kinds of comic readers available for the iPhone?

yes, quite a few. I recommend Comic Reader Mobi myself, but i'm not about to start that fight again!

I'm thinking 2011 or 2012 will be the year of the tablet for me.  I'm interested, but they still have a little ways to go before the price/value ratio is good enough for me to self-justify a purchase.

No, enough with the gadgets for me.
2 laptops, netbook, eBook reader, iPod Touch, Blackberry, etc.

I'll pass on this for once.

HP Slate, hmmm

I know I'm not :rock

Also the HP Slate is the same fucking thing MS tried to sell 10 years ago: UMPC with Windows installed.

They NEVER learn.

When Apple rolls out its own tablet with no fucking MacOS installed but a specific, barebones requied kernel then people will see the difference.

Having to pay for a bunch of apps?
Title: Re: Who's buying a tablet this year?
Post by: Eel O'Brian on January 07, 2010, 05:29:09 PM
yeah, there's like a million free "apps" for windows, so even if the hp slate is overpriced for what it is (and it's hp, so it will be) all the free programs will make up the difference

otoh, if apps are transferable from iphone (developers apparently have the SDK for porting already) for free, it could be fine. And I could live with Mac OSx, plenty of good free stuff out there for it too.

This is pretty much going to kill the PC and laptop. If it becomes financially feasible to purchase a 5" tablet that runs on Android and Tegra 2 (thus allowing for 1080p video, Flash, etc.) with a wireless carrier - why even bother with anything else at that point? Unless you are a hardcore gamer or rely on a big rig for your job, these new age tablets could end up being the defacto communication device for everybody.

i can see the "tablet docks into the keyboard forming a voltron laptop" model really catching on

this is the one i want, i think:

The 5" Dell tablet with Tegra 2 innards and running off a GSM carrier is what I want. It's the most portable. You'd have a phone/ereader/computer on the go.

The Lenovo build is pretty wonky. I wouldn't mind a decent sized tablet with a keyboard/speaker dock. It'd replace a PC and laptop at that point.

Why wouldn't the Apple tablet just use OS X? No deal if it doesn't for me.

Bought a tablet in 2009, used the tablet functions for like 2 months, novelty factor blah blah, wouldn't get another one.
