Oh shut up Genghis, they could've gotten plenty of shittier directors.  Revolutionary Road was good, as was Away We Go.  It's just a tad odd considering the genre jump for him.

I don't think Sam Mendes has directed a film that wasn't divisive. Every thing he directs is a love it/hate it experience.

I'll be honest, I only ever saw Away We Go and Revolutionary Road, and thoroughly enjoyed them both.  So this sounds a-ok to me.

I read this as EON thinking that the Marc Forster experiment was a resounding success. Which, while it was for me personally, it wasnt with the audience at large. Bizarre choice.

Not nearly as bizarre as Michael Apted, who is most famous for the documentary series "Up."  And besides, Mendes worked with Craig on Road to Perdition so maybe Craig recommended him?  Who knows.  It is a mystery.

Mendes' cinematic output isn't anything to be excited about, dude.  I mean, other than American Beauty, which was mostly great because of the screenplay and Spacey's performance, Mendes hasn't really done anything to make me think he's a particularly good (or even decent) director.  I'm sure the new Bond movie will have pretty cinematography, but other than that, it all depends on the script...

Going to have to go with the Evilborian take on this.

I really liked American Beauty and Away We Go. Never saw Road to Perdition, but Revolutionary Road was a pathetic pale imitation of the book.

Mendes is a great genre director. None of his films are ZOMG AMAZING CINEMA CLASSICS, but he has a deeply coherent look and feel which is nore than I can say for a lot of directors working today. It'll be interesting to see how his melancholy ports to Bond land

Not trolling, but what is it specifically that you enjoy about QoS? To me, it felt like a short, incomplete Bond film. The plot was asinine and the action scenes were impossible to keep up with.

In reaction to the news, I'm always stoked for more Bond, and Sam Mendes could bring something new to the Bond franchise, which is what every Craig Bond seems to be about so far.
