XSEED Games Confirms Ship Date for The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces
XSEED Games is pleased to announce today the North American ship date for the upcoming Wii™ exclusive release, The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces. The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces will start shipping to retailers across the country January 12th, 2010 for the suggested retail price of $29.99.
The somber story of a world that needs war to survive, based on a novel series by Hiroshi MORI and adapted into an animated film directed by Mamoru Oshii and released by Sony Pictures in the US, is told with a combination of animated cut-scenes and voiced in-game sequences during battle. Players take on the role of a rookie pilot new to the combat pilot group known as the Sky Crawlers. Dog-fighting simulation and flight is mirrored by a unique gameplay mechanic; players hold the Nunchuk™ in the right hand as the flight control stick, tilted to roll, pitch, and yaw, while the Wii Remote™, acting as the throttle, is held in the left hand and is tilted up to accelerate and down to decelerate.
The Wii exclusive air combat game was developed by the Project ACES team of Ace Combat fame and is rated T for Teen. The retail release comes with reversible cover art so that fans of the animated movie may flip the cover to reveal the same front boxart as the Japanese release. Fans are encouraged to visit the newly launched official site at www.skycrawlersinnocentaces.com

"it's all about the core gameplay, and Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces will have you jumping in to the cockpit time and time again. The action is fast, the dog fighting is intense, and you simply won't find a better flight game on Wii."
Nintendo Power - 7.0: "The best thing about The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces is that it makes you feel like a badass ace pilot."

Anyone else picking up the game next week?
-
Pretty good bullshots. I might check it out; Ace Combat 6 was fun but eh, not so great.
-
i watched the animu movie.
decent.
-
Nice draw distance.
-
Will wait for No More Heroes instead

Anyone else picking up the game next week? IGN claims that it's the best flight game on the Wii.
hype killed! if ign is saying it to be good then it's going to be bad
-
well, not as if it has any real competition in that catagory.
but yeah, I'm getting it. A mere 30 bucks, and classic/Gamecube controller compatability make me buy buy buy.

Holy shit, probably the best textures I've seen on the Wii. That hand looks amazing, and the lighting is ace too
-
is it 60 fps
-
Is that LCD even widescreen? haha. fucking wii.
-
Wow, Xbox-esque graphics.
I think?
I'm impressed.
-
fuck the haters -- if this is even remotely as good as Ace Combat on the PS2, I'm buyin'
-
is it 60 fps
Yes.
This game is seriously wonky, but its actually not bad. There's all the recognizable hallmarks of the Ace Combat series, but everything is a bit askew. The planes are quite obviously, no longer jet fighters, which lends a slower pace but the planes seem to be much more nimble (confession time, I haven't played an Ace Combat game since the PS2, long, long ago). Missiles are out, but you've got a super meter that functions pretty much in the same way.
The already-simplified flight sim aspect of Ace Combat has been further streamlined, either for the Wii audience or to fit the actually kinda functional motion control scheme (although the Classic Controller is far, far preferable). The 'normal' and 'easy' control schemes don't just simplify the controls, but also make enemy planes easier to hit then the water is while standing on a rowboat with a handful of rocks. Tuning the control option to 'expert' actually makes it play like a real, actual game instead of "My First Flight Sim-By Fisher Price".
Also, turning up the difficulty also makes it quite reasonably hectic and challenging, which doesn't appear to happen for the normal campaign until much later on.
So if you disregard the default control scheme, and not be too terribly annoyed by the very bad menu interface, and don't mind the 'pretty good by last gen standards' graphics, there's actually a pretty good game here. I know all that sounds like a whole lotta caveats, but really, this game doesn't suck*. As one of the very few actual game-games being made for the Wii, and a pretty good one at that, it deserves a look.
*Provided you don't mind the anime-ish story and you do tune your game.

The controls are trash. Wii yet again ruins what could have been a half decent game.
-
Will save my money and get Ace Combat Xi for the iPhone instead.
Ace Combat Xi has better controls and gameplay than any flying game available on the iPhone. The problem is that the game is over far too soon. You can get through all of the missions inside of 30 minutes and that’s it.
Sounds better than any Wii game :hyper
-
Interesting analogy: The Wii gets outdated propeller planes, while other consoles -and even the iPhone- get sleek jet fighters.
-
Wii games - 4:3 promotional pictures
iPhone - 16:9 sexy goodness

I'm more so looking forward to After Burner Climax on XBLA...
:bow F-14D Tomcat :bow2
-
why is there a crosshair in a japanese air combat game ???

The controls arent really trash, they just dont have the remote controlled toy airplane controls they normally do. Well that is what they tell me anyway. I will have to see for myself. :S

Yawn. Most of the assholes providing negative commentary in this thread haven't even played the fucking game. Once again, behaving like a flock of jilted women. Don't worry, ladies, the January NPDs won't be that bad!

Oh, fuck yeah! Afterburner Climax is like 100 million times better than anything Ace Combat, plus it's gonna be on XBLA for like $10-$15. That's potentially more than half the price of this poor man's Ace Combat clone!
