CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — A Clearwater man faces fraud charges after authorities say he agreed to sell World of Warcraft characters online but didn't turn over the characters after he got the money.

Police arrested 23-year-old Christopher H. Bouffard on Monday and charged him with scheming to defraud and two counts of grand theft.

Police say Bouffard accepted $760 from at least two people in 2008, but cut off all contact with the buyers once he received payment.

World of Warcraft, a multiplayer online role-playing game, has more than 11 million monthly subscribers. More advanced characters allow users to play at a higher level.

Bouffard was being held on $20,000 bail.

One of my friends from WoW sold his character for $1100 and then account-recovered it back shortly after in 2006... :-X

I think his brother did it too

As long as he waited a month or two, they probably weren't even playing it anymore anyway.

Isn't EvE's gameplay sort of based around scamming other players?

In the game it plays a pretty large role, yes.

I guess all those people are headed to the slammer then.
