jay run webWe are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we’ve ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly.

What happened to him? I saw him put on a free show at Easy Street Records in Seattle last year. Good times.

Wow, this is crazy.  He was acting like such a maniac last year; I wonder if his cause of death has anything to do with that.

So, according to the geniuses at gaf, that song in the first video apparently sounds like shit.

I don't get it.  Do some of them over there only like stuff when it sounds like a rare velvet underground bootleg recorded with a tin-version phonograph?

The video in this thread's OP? What? It's fucking awesome. I've never heard of this guy, but I'm interested after seeing that. Reminds me of my childhood, this type of music.

there's a lot of this kind of stuff out there right now.  poppy garage punk stuff, mostly because of Jay.

check out some acts like NoBunny, Hunx and the Punks (uh, this is probably the evilbore gay subtext house band, so beware) and the like.  It's really quite fun but if you immerse yourself into it, there's a tendency for it to all run together

I agree. I don't really pay attention to the politics and business side of bands. I can't deny that some bands suck as soon as the go commercial to appeal to a broader audience (e.g. Green Day) but it doesn't do that for everyone. I just ignore people who criticize music based on any fact other than the music itself.

The commercial aspect of music is shitty, I'm surrounded by it.  But mostly just by the big motherfuckers like Warner and Sony.  All the acts that sign to lesser labels like Matador, Domino, Sire, Asthmatic Kitty, whatever, they're doing what's best for their careers and getting good money without having to deal with the awful corporate dicks of some of these big Nashville/LA/NY companies.  And even though a lot of those labels are just underlings of the big guys, they don't have to deal with so much crappy press/publicity, awful booking, big-wig creative pressure, etc.

It's an art first and a business second, but its not very far away from first.

I'm not really worried about it. The artists themselves shouldn't be concerned with making something 'good', getting 'recognition', or record sales. Imho, art is one of the only things you can be selfish about. You should be making stuff for yourself, and if anything steps in the way of you doing that, bail. No amount of money is worth compromising your creativity.

Yeah that's true, but some people take that same mindset and apply it to general quality of recording, the difference between an 8-track and something Pro-Tool'd and mixed professionally.  It's ridiculous.

To be fair, it's understandable that poor audio quality would turn people off.

Personally it doesn't bother me unless it's just atrocious. The mixing and sound on some of my favorite albums (36 Chambers, Operation Doomsday for instance) are pretty bad...but the music is fucking awesome. Plus it can give a badass gritty sound to it.

Well right, I agree with you.  But some people take the exact opposite viewpoint: if it sounds like it's professionally mixed mastered, they hate it.

edit: whatever, it's just an opinion, but I just can't seem to understand that as soon as someone gets the opportunity to better their recordings, hate flows to them.  It's always seemed ridiculous to me.

Yea, some things that sound too mixed/produced can piss me off, but usually I don't even notice it (which is a good thing imo). Linkin Park's stuff sounds extremely robotic and glossy for instance; obviously that's not the biggest problem with the band.

edit: same thing with Muse's sound imo

The only thing I find that really annoys the shit out of me production-wise is unnecessarily double-tracked vocals.  That last Franz Ferdinand album springs to mind.

Err, I guess of the stuff that is in my line of sight, anyway.  I'm sure I could pick out all kinds of stuff to hate about the production on a Puddle of Butt Mudd album.
