Title: Sands Of Destruction
Post by: magus on January 14, 2010, 05:10:45 PM
ok so i've put a few hours in this
- presentation is top notch,it reminds me of old psx classics, good music and decent sprite works
- so far i don't want to punch any of the character in the face which feels like a rare event these days
- in fact so far the story has been... good... is this really happening? i like the character none of them take themself much seriously,i actualy had some chuckle in some cutscenes
- there have been a lot of cutscenes,so if you are the kind of guy who just want to punch stuff in the face you might dislike this, luckily they are all skippable
- sometimes during cutscenes when a character says something "in character" they gain that phrase and get to equip it,equipping phrases give you special skills (like shorten time between turns or the ability to get a def boost when you get hit)
- in battle you gain CP which you then spend to improve your normal attack or special skills, you can increase your power or accuracy (or in case of spells,SP and Power) if you increase one the other decrease so you need to keep some sort of balance, improving stuff give you new skills/attack
- in battle you have two kind of attack, one is powerfull but deliver only a single blow, the other hurts less but deliver a string of attacks instead, each character can make 2 actions per turn but if they score a critical they get an extra action (tough i'm not sure about this) it feels like there is more to the battle system but either it's still locked or i'm just dumb and i'm not understanding it
- if you press R you can escape from battles after 2-3 seconds
- random battle haven't been a problem but sometimes bosses get idiotic and decide to wipe your party in a single turn of attack, one of them pulled out an attack which paralyzed my entire party and then proceeded to smack my ass before my character could recover, guess i need to accessorize
- you can save anywhere which is a mixed blessing,on one hand you can turn off the game when you want and on the other it's hard to say when a boss is going to pop out

so far i've been able to skip everything
i'm not bothered by the VA,if you really hate it just undub the thing
normal encounter still haven't gave me any sort of problem and i'm able to do enough damage to kill enemies in max 3 attacks
not bothered by the upgrade system nor the EXP requirement

how far did you play? last boss i fought was 2nd fight with wolf guy whatshisname

i've fought a boss at level 15 and he raped my ass three times in a row,i grinded up to level 18 and all his attack started to do single digit damage and i moped the floor with him,not really a balanced game... tough maybe i was underleveled since the next character that joined was level 20

well my character learned to chain attack all together, suddenly i do so much damage everything dies just by looking at it boss included  :-\ dungeon are also start to get frustating,so far there wasn't a single dungeon that has been easy to navigate, all of them have been huge labyrinthic headache and it doesn't help when the game keeps bothering you with random battles

i like the character and the plot but i'm not sure i want to keep pressing

Don't worry, Arc Rise Fantasia is better at least in the first bunch of hours.  Image Epoch is slowly improving and learning how to make a game beyond visuals I think.

morte and kyrie personalities are a breath of fresh air to rpg characters (morte mostly).

hopefully game tone stay this cheerful and sarcastic to the end then again i doubt i will beat it anyway with this high encounter rate.

Title: Re: Sands Of Destruction
Post by: magus on January 24, 2010, 07:01:14 PM
the comment wasn't directed at AA4 quality but at himuro "IT SUCKED LOL" comment,i mean he didn't even made any example like "THERE IS A DUMB DETECTIVE AND LUPIN HAD A DUMB DETECTIVE SO CLEARLY SOMETHING IS WRONG!"

but anyway i tought AA4 was okay, the puzzle were there, the new perceive system was really cool if somewhat underused and the character were good,if there was a problem with the game is that near the end the plot got somewhat convoluted and stupid

but ehy himu didn't have any problem with final fantasy 8 so...  :D
Title: Re: Sands Of Destruction
Post by: Himu on January 24, 2010, 07:03:38 PM
I didn't have a problem with FF8 because I played it when I was a teenager.

If I played FF8 for the first time today, I'd probably hate it.

The puzzles were average, the characters were average, the cases were boring and stupid. It's just such an average game, and I'm amazed that PW fans cling to that game. Easily the lowest point for the series.

Word, word. AA4 was a total disappointment, from start to finish. I don't think anyone can argue that.

Back on topic, this game's aight. I'm kind of enjoying how the game's taking the whole "you are a ticking time bomb and are going to destroy the world" business so far, though I fear that the game's going to turn for the dark... eventually. I also like that battles are piss-easy if you take the five seconds it takes to actually futz around with the CP/attack bullshit (encounter rate is on the high side though). Plys you can save anywhere. Not really taxing, not pissing me off. That's a good thing.

Definitely a 6/10 as far as RPGs go, but whatever, it's short and I don't really have anything better to play right now.

well actualy i was trying to argue that, but yea this thread is about sands of destruction so...
I heard from a member of the AA hardcore fanbase that Miles is a bit of a letdown.  But we shall see, we shall see.
as long as someone get murdered and i get to point finger and think about how the murder happen i'm happy  :)
the only way it could turn to be disappointing would be if edgeworth had to convince a little girl to get off the stairs and he couldn't call her with bad names or else he would get a game over like in... you know... that other detective game!

the best thing about sands of destruction is the auto grinding.

you don't wanna grind? no problem! we will make you fight after every 5 steps in dungeons with lots of doors and fetchquests and you will love it!

currently at level 27 and i think i maxed most of the skills already (not really maxed, just 3 slots for power/accuracy for every move, it seems i can only go further one slot now for some reason), got some elevator pass from a beastlord.

currently at level 27 and i think i maxed most of the skills already (not really maxed, just 3 slots for power/accuracy for every move, it seems i can only go further one slot now for some reason)

i can increase them now that i am at level 30+

and thanks to that, my skills are at level 8/9 and i fortified some skills together and now the game is even more piss easy.

i can do 40 combo hit with just mashing the Y button and after that you can end it with a finisher/special move lmao.

also, Ria's is so broken, her guns do shitload of damage.

whoever designed this game dungeons should be shot in the dick.

edit: i might stop as well and get mass effect 2, there is little joy in fighting endless random encounters while figuring out what to do in some shit maze dungeon.
