I know that wearing National Heritage t-shirt and Lee carpenter jeans from Wal-Mart with Asics shoes from Academy Sports and Outdoors saves a lot of money and makes you look less like a self-absorbed hipster than any of the stuff in the GAF fashion thread.

neckwear always comes first.  By a scarf or a cravat and build your wardrobe off of that.

I will start by what I hate in what I consider 'recent' fashion:
- Men wearing v-neck tshirts or undoing the top few buttons to reveal their pecks or more often man cleavage
- Tshirts with scarves
- Wayfarer sunglasses
- Kitsch tattoos particularly on people's calf muscles,  behind their neck or shoulder blade (unless you're a girl). It screams attention whore, I don't want to see my tattoo but I want everybody else to see my cliche pos.

I typically just wear old gym shirts, old shirts that I bought from a gym, and gym shorts.  I also wear a $20 fleece Columbia jacket if it is cold.

For work, I just wear Ralph Lauren polos or button downs and Dockers pants.

Jon Bones i ain't.

Don't wear underwear.  Instead wrap a large tee-shirt around you like a diaper and tie it with a knot in the front.  That way when you go to JO all you have to do is take off your pants, sit down and untie the knot.  Then you're set like Himu.

You know what *I* hate? Tween shit!

When I want to buy some legitimate fashion, I don't want a bunch of raggedy ass looking tattoo goth shit on my clothes! That crap drives me insane.

Look at this. Great looking and feeling clothes RUINED by tween (or punk rock tattoo culture). RUINED.

I wanted this soooooo bad. It really made me wet. I like the way it feels, and I like the way it looks. And then I saw...a skull on the front. I wanted to kill myself.

I will pile every item of Ed Hardy clothing as well as every pair of wayfarers into an enormous pile and burn it. As for me, I like to rock pretty basic, clean stuff with a watch and a pair of absolutely ridiculous sneakers that still go with the outfit. But pretty basic/clean, besides the sneakers. Fuck insane patterns and crazy patches and shit. I'm also not a big fan of branding besides accessories.

EXPRESS is really bad with that shit.  They have nice, reasonably priced dress shirts, ties and slacks and whatnot, but everything else is adorned with weird tribal tattoo shit and skulls.  And they love putting hoods on shit that shouldn't have a hood.

Yeah, I like buying certain dress clothes and button-downs from Express (and Guess as well), but lately a lot of their shit has gotten REALLY guinea, lots of skulls and shit. It's been that way for the last 2 years or so, it's really played out at this point.

If I'm just hanging out, I like to wear t-shirts and jeans. Usually my t-shirts are EDM-related stuff, I actually found Tiesto and Deadmau5 shirts at Hot Topic of all places  ???

I missed the whole wayfarers hate thing.  There was a gaf thread about hating on them too.  All I know is that, since watching Terminator 2 in the early 90s, I wanted to get a pair of what Ahnold wore but couldn't because I wear glasses.  Now suddenly they're supposed to be hipster fashion or something? fashion is so confusing.

What style? I suggest 3-button (since you're tall, right?). But that looks mighty outdated. If you want to go the cheap route, grab a good pair of slacks and a matching sports jacket.

From the city? Cities typically have those places that have deals on pretty decent suits. Like 2 suits for 100 bucks and stuff.

In Houston we have places like Suits U and Suits Mart. Great places for deals.

Here's the thing about fashion: it's not about brand names or price. You can still get a good lookin' suit for a modest price.

Well, 3 button is very conservative. Think 60's style. I think a 3 button suit is more lawyer-ish than a 2 button.

Three buttons are for old men. And you can get two buttons that look more professional. Get your suit tailored to fit you for the extra $15 too.

Malek walks from a practice hearing for law school, wearing a three button suit.

He sees Cute Girl and they start talking.

The rest of the women at the school think she's his daughter, and now avoid having sexual relations or a relationship with him because they've now labeled him  as a single father and probably killed his former wife.

But seriously, you should observe what other guys have and ask the people at the store. Try between 2 and 3 button to see which you prefer. So long as you seek the advice of someone at the store you should be fine; they're there for a reason.

Don't forget to get it hemmed! Though you're probably tall enough it won't matter. :( I hate my life.

To pull of a three button suit you need the correct body shape- long torso, V-shape back etc. I don't think even Wrika could pull off a 3 button suit.

You should invite cute girl along :teehee. No like really.
Title: Re: The Official Evilbore Fashion thread
Post by: Himu on January 18, 2010, 03:06:38 PM
I do agree 2 buttons are preferable to 3, but it all depends on what you're doing.

If I were going to a wedding, I wouldn't wear a 2 button. Likewise, if I were in law school and had to dress to impress, I wouldn't wear a 2 button either.

The thing about three buttons is that they can also be interchangeable with tuxedos. So it's win/win. Every man should have two different suits for totally different occasions.

I didn't even realise suits came in 2/3 button versions and that they gave a different look/were appropriate for different occasions dependent upon said number of buttons.

This thread has been very educational.

Collars should definitely not fold over like that under your jacket.  Ever heard of starch? Not to mention that shirt fits poorly as well.  :(

They really shouldn't. I don't know how it happened.

And yeah, that's an old suit. The clothes come off as baggy because I lost a lot of weight.

Honestly though, I shouldn't even be wearing 3 buttons because I'm short. But I like the look.

I consulted a friend of mine and she said she was aware of this, but only because she watches a lot of TV where men wear suits, like The West Wing and Mad Men, and she said if she didn't, she also wouldn't know.

I haven't got a suit, I'm so short so I look ridiculous in them, like Peewee Herman.

The most formal piece of clothing I own is this black semisleeve shirt

It's saved for special occasions since it was quite expensive (for my standards)

I'd rather not wear shirts and jeans to work. Hell, my typical non-work outfit is nice jeans with a button up/sweater combo and a blazer.

In the summer, it's jeans and a button up shirt or t-shirt with a light jacket or blazer.

Also, you could just dress nice all the time and the women would always be like "Wow."

I was mostly joking. There's nothing wrong with t-shirts and jeans but I feel that's a little plain sometimes. Nothing wrong with mixing it up every now and again.

As for what I wear, it depends. I'm not going to wear the same thing ever day. My biases lean towards casual wear, though.

I really stress dressing well. Since I'm overweight, dressing well goes a long way. I don't see anything wrong with a guy who dresses well but doesn't really obsess over the details like a woman.

When you guys say shirts do you mean a dress shirt? Wearing a dress shirt can to be casual!

So long as you have something covering it up like a belt or a coat or sweater, tucking dress shirts into jeans isn't so bad. You benefit from the comfortable lightness of the shirts while wearing comfy jeans while looking arguably "stylish" and "professional". Win/win.

I'm an absolute fashion disaster for the most part. I grab decent pants/jeans (not that urban tribal shit, grown up clothes) from Express/Banana Republic when I can get them on sale over the Internet since I hate shopping malls, and have a huge rack of long sleeve button ups and short sleeve button ups that I wear in the summer/winter to pair with them. I look fine and I'm OK with that given that I'm happily married and still look decent for the most part.

Keep in mind that I live in North Carolina, where simply keeping clean cut, tucking your shirt in, and not having a gut puts you in the top 10% easy.

I wear t-shirts a lot in the summer and around the house. Then again I'm a bit of a homebody-well, a huge homebody really-and my workplace is extremely slack on dress code. They feel great with a good pair of jeans.

Not practical for hiking/birdwatching though-I have a set of lightweight longsleeve stuff from REI that I wear when outdoorsing during the summer. I definitely have the "birder" look going when I go out (and if you've ever seen if you'd know it!).

here are some example pics of what I usually wear.

Example 1, informal:

Fiberops raw denim, 10 Deep tshirt and Penfield flannel! Feel comfortable in this type of combo. I wear this kind of stuff almost all the time.

Example 2, slightly more formal:

Mishka grey denim, S.N.S Herning knitted cardigan with some sort of color accent tshirt underneath. Love this as well but does look a bit more grown up than the tee and shirt combo.

Example 3, trying too hard:

Bought this Staple shirt a long time ago and haven't really worn it outside the house yet, I can't really pull the look off.  :-\

I'm super conservative: white button downs, chinos, polos, straight leg jeans, etc.  Not really a t-shirt guy.  I don't like to think about clothes or fashion, so I just go with simple classics and don't try to embarrass myself by being trendy.
