How would you play FFXIII online??  ???

Turn-based online fights don't sound interesting.

Not online play necessarily, but one of the reasons DQIX sold more than any other DQ ever is the game had new weekly downloadable quests featuring cameo characters and bosses and dungeons, etc... plus it had all kinds of online gimmicks and legitimate multiplayer gameplay.  What this all means is that there were FREE reasons to keep your copy to continually get new fun from the game and not sell it back.  Thus making it less available at used game stores, have less of a used price drop and that all lead to higher new game sales.  It was extremely smart.  Something L5 probably learned from Layton sales (which also had weekly free downloadable new puzzles).

Meanwhile the FF team decides to release a game at near $100 that 1.8 million people will beat in a week or two, and has absolutely zero replay value or new material coming.  So yeah, when they can trade it back in for at least 1/2 of what they paid (3/4ths+ if they're quick), a hell of a lot of that 1.8 million are selling their games back, the used market floods, the used prices drop, and anyone buying a new copy for $90 next to a mint used copy for $50 is an idiot.

For all the progressive design the FF series has compared to DQ, it's ironic that the DQ series is more progressive on thinking about HOW TO ACTUALLY SELL COPIES  :lol

The fact that they didn't even have DLC lined up from the start for XIII is pretty mind-boggling.  It's like they thought they were still making a PS2 game in 2005.

So Hamauzu quit Square after XIII.  Kind of a shame since XIII's ost is one of the best in the series.  He could have been a very good replacement for Uematsu for mainline FFs.

Uematsu quit Square but he's writing the entire soundtrack for FFXIV.

Oh wow.  I loved Uematsu's stuff on XI.  Will definitely pick up the ost for XIV even though I won't touch the game.

I like Tanioka and Mizuta, but it's pretty scary to think one of them might be in line to compose the next mainline FF.

They'll probably use someone new.  Or ask Shimomura to do it if Versus XIII turns out well.

Don't worry yourself Demi. The nation of Japan are all trying to remove FF13 from their collective memories too.

Poor second hand shops are feeling the strain of all those returned copies , price has crashed already as the Fuji-esque supply mountain dwarfs the anorexic demand :

Yeah, Hamauzu leaving Square doesn't necessarily mean he won't work on future FFs.  Shimomura left Square back in 2002 for example, and she's still worked/working on KH2, Versus, 3rd Birthday and various KH spinoffs.

Sekito, Mizuta and Tanioka all joined as composers in the (late) 90s, and Ishimoto, Iwasaki, Yamazaki and Kawamori all worked as manipulators then.

I can appreciate the style Amano has and all the hard work he's poured into his works but I just don't find them very good. Apparently neither does the art world or anyone else besides Square since he's consistently failed to make an impression anywhere besides being that "Final Fantasy art guy".

He's also the character designer for Vampire Hunter D and Gatchaman.

FF13's US commercial is so bad that it makes me embarassed I want to buy it. Especially since my roommates and I watch ESPN on the regular.

Roommate: Hey Garrett, you gonna get that?
Me: Hahaha. You kidding me? Hahahaha. Fuck no!
Roommate: Word! If you buy that game, I will take your nuts. You wouldn't deserve them! Let's go smoke some reefer!
Me: Aight.

Suffice to say, I will be playing FF13 on my sdtv in my room instead of the hdtv in the living room to save myself from embarrassment.

I can picture it now:

My dad calls me after watching the All Star Game.

Me: Good game.
Dad: Yeah it was. Son, we need to talk.
Me: What's up?
Dad: I saw that Final Fantasy commercial when watching the game. I know you like Final Fantasy. Son, are you gay?

X360 version:

4 Discs
Compressed video
Compressed audio
Watered down graphics

Ps3 version:

HD

Too lazy to download ~40GB and burn the data on 4 disc. And I don't want to swap discs and play with ugly downgraded SD graphics.

So I'm just buying the Ps3 version. Will swap it with GOW 3 afterwards.

You can say all you want. But I'm not going to download the X360 version.
I don't think it's even worth downloading, considering it's such a bad port.

Has anyone actually done a legitimate port comparison? Game Informer said that they didn't even get a 360 copy to review  :lol

Well, one of the Digital Foundry guys did a comparison and determined that the 360 version run at 1024x576 with 2x multisampling.  This was based on the direct feed shots that were released, however, not their own captures.  Of course, these captures had full 720p hud elements while the 3D was lower resolution.

Also...

Not that it matters since the game is terrible, but still, interesting to watch.  I suspect they tossed the 360 version to an even less capable team.

man oh man the 360 got buttfucked this time around. it was bound to get a super shitty port sooner or later but i didn't think it would happen with such a high profile title.

welp it's times like these that i'm glad i keep the dust magnet (ps3) around. guess i'll be dusting her off come march 9th!

haha, looks like the 360 is in for a world of hurt.  The game-buying public won't stand for an upscaled resolution.  Final Fantasy pretty much determines the console wars and this one is OVER!

I think this is the first major multiplatform title where the PS3 version is better.

I suspect Sfags are creaming their panties right now and inventing revisionist history suggesting it has always been the case (PS3 having superior multiplatform versions)

Ah well.

Ah well.
I don't think anyone is stupid enough to do that.

There are already plenty of titles that demonstrate the PS3 as a very capable machine, but it is most definitely less developer friendly and demands a non-traditional approach to get the best results.  This does make it seem as if the engine for XIII was tailored for the PS3 and not really a multiplatform engine as they tried to lead us to believe.

It's very bizarre that resolution was sliced, though, as that is one area I'd expect the stronger 360 GPU to pull ahead.

This seems like a similar case as Bayonetta.  There was NO reason why the PS3 could not have run Bayo perfectly, but the people responsible for porting simply did a poor job.  I suspect a B-team was in charge of this 360 port and here we are.  It's simply rare to  see any game tailored for PS3 first and then ported to 360.  It's almost always the other way around.

While it wasn't all that amazing looking, I do have to say that Visceral Games did a great job with Dante's Inferno.  It remains quite possibly the most accurate multiplatform game we've seen to date.  There is no difference between the two versions.  It is basically 99.9% identical.  Dead Space was just about the same as well.  They know what's up.

Still, regarding XIII, the casuals won't give a shit.  While visiting a friend recently, I was amazed when he fired up his 360 on his HDTV only to see that it was running in 480p 4:3 stretched mode.  >_<  I've seen this so many times before that I'm now convinced that more people are playing their consoles in stretched SD 4:3 mode than in HD...

It's not too hard to understand...they probably spent a long time prepping FFXIII for the PS3, then they saw which way the wind was blowing this gen, probably got prodded by MS, then did a quicker port to the 360.  Didn't they say something about not starting the 360 version until the PS3 version was finished?  That would cut the dev time even more...

I hate upscaled graphics, but meh, I'll live.

They did say that, but it was obviously not true as the 360 version was shown at E3 last year well before the PS3 version was complete.

I suspect Eurogamer's view on this matter is probably the case...

Quote
While the eDRAM gives the 360 tangible advantages over the PS3 (it’s the reason why so many cross-format titles have anti-aliasing on 360 while it is omitted on the PS3 versions), 10Mb isn’t really enough for a full 720p framebuffer with the added overhead of anti-aliasing. Instead, developers switch memory in and out of the eDRAM in a process called ‘tiling’. This incurs an increased geometry cost for polygons that span more than one tile. In plain English? Realistically we expect the 360 version to match the 720p and 2x multisampling anti-aliasing of the PS3 game, but at a cost– the HDR lighting in the PS3 game will most likely be pared down from high range to medium range dynamic rendering.

Few games on 360 run with ‘proper’ HDR. Halo 3 is one of them, but this comes at a cost of a sub-HD resolution and no anti-aliasing. In the case of Final Fantasy XIII, the drop down to MDR simply makes more sense as opposed to savagely cutting down resolution or anti-aliasing. So aside from small changes to lighting, we expect the games to be totally like for like in the real time 3D sections, and due to that lightning fast eDRAM, there’s a strong chance that performance may actually be smoother. How small will the changes to lighting be? Considering we spent the best part of the day firing off 'is it proper HDR/isn’t it' emails to one-another, let’s just say that it’s highly unlikely any one will notice. A useful by-product of moving away from proper HDR on 360 will be that the alpha transparency issues the PS3 version has with the way it handles characters’ hair will most likely vanish.

Sounds like they may have sacrificed resolution for more accurate HDR lighting.

Lovely...  :\

HDMI does simplify things, fortunately, as it will automatically select the best video mode your TV is capable of.  This is why BOTH companies should have included HDMI cables in the box from the start!

I was just going to post the same thing.  it's not the poor shot quality that's worrying me. Every single scene is going to be "Heroes don't run from fights!" and other cliched lines
