Also, would be incredibly uninteresting unless you consider doug and I trying to one up the each other's metaphors for an entire segment fascinating listening.

Good episode!  I like all the weird novelty songs from the 30's and 40's.

Doug complains that Bayonetta's cutscenes and minigames are awful, and asks why the entire game can't just be beat-em-up action.  To me that's just like asking why movies can't just be nonstop action.  You need pacing.  You need something in between the action sequences to let people calm down and relax for a little while.  Even though I didn't care for Angel Attack or the cutscenes, I would have felt pretty overwhelmed if the game was just wall-to-wall action without a break.
Title: Re: Borecast 31: 2010 Tech, The Holiday Loot Game
Post by: Junpei the Tracer! on January 21, 2010, 09:35:34 PM
Drinky is right about Bayo's enemy design. When you beat the game a gallery opens up and there's a 3D model viewer. The angels have such detail put in them, it's crazy. You wouldn't notice most of the stuff in-game, quite a bit of care was put in them. And I agree with border, the game has those moments so you are never doing one thing for too long, so you'll never get bored.

Title: Re: Borecast 31: 2010 Tech, The Holiday Loot Game
Post by: border on January 21, 2010, 10:09:57 PM
Final Fight is one of Bayonetta's most primitive ancestors, and even there they realized that the action had to be broken up by cutscenes and bonus stages.  What Final Fight does better is that the minigames are just an extension of combat (smash up a car, break barrels), whereas Bayonetta's minigame is something completely disconnected from the normal combat.  Maybe they should have had some Alfheim-style time challenges instead of Angel Attack, where instead of earning bullets for the minigame in normal stages, you earn bonus seconds so that you have longer to complete the time challenge.

Why are people in this thread taking Bayonetta's story seriously? It's just an excuse to make some flashy and funny cutscenes. Taking time out of your life to analyze it even a little or compare it to other games is a waste of time and you should be ashamed of yourself.

The serious analysis of Bayonetta's cut scenes in this thread make me :lol

The game doesn't take itself seriously and I thought all the stuff with Luka and Cerezita was awesome.  Luka constantly getting owned by Bayonetta and Cerezita is so adorable!

My only complaint is I wanted to see more of Rodin, he's so fucking badass.  I hope he's playable in the sequel.

Am I the only one that gets sad when Kevin talks about how he sells his personal possessions to pay for gaming?  And now he's out of possessions to sell, so I just picture a guy coming home from a hard day of hanging Sheetrock to an empty living room with a TV on a cinder block and a fold-up lawn chair.

Plus it's only a matter of time until the only thing left to sell is his body.

I do that too. I don't like to acquire stuff, and I like to be somewhat thrifty, so in order to justify purchasing something for pure entertainment purposes I will make myself sell older games or movies that I don't like anymore or have gotten full use out of. I think its a smart way to manage discretionary spending

I sold off all of my 360 games to get another 360 (an Arcade unit).  I want to just Gamefly shit from here on out.

I remember wanting to collect as much games as possible until I realized that it is very expensive and a lot of these games rapidly depreciate over time, unless you're buying rare shit (like Zone of the Enders 2 apparently) and even that is a gamble.  Now I'm almost the polar opposite - most of the time I only play a game to completion once and even sometimes, I don't even play them until completion.

I understand where he is coming from.  I still have a few DVDs and box sets I can sell off if I want to.

I maintain a budget-neutral (except for Nov-Dec) gaming hobby, selling stuff to fund other purchases. Keeps things relatively uncluttered around the house-it's the accumulation of stuff that bothers me the most.

I got the sense that Kevin was actually selling personal possessions like appliances and TVs and furniture and shit -- not just trading in games for other games.  If it's just the Gamestop burn-through then it's not really sad.

I don't re-sell many games because I don't buy many games in the first place.  My biggest game collection was probably for PS2 and I doubt it ever got above 25 games.  Trade in-value for stuff is so pathetic that I doubt I could bring myself to part with any of the stuff I have in fact purchased.

I would like to say that the lack of physical clutter mixed with less guilt because you get everything so cheap is what makes Steam so incredibly insidious.

i collected comics and related nerd memorabilia/crap for over 20 years (i used to have a pretty healthy lower-grade golden age collection, but that's dwindled to a couple of short boxes)

that's the stuff i tend to sell off to fund the gaming

collecting comics (and all the brickabrack that comes with it) is just about the worst hobby as far as accumulating boxes of stuff you're never going to look at again once it goes into storage, so when i really got back into gaming/gadgets i made the decision to pay for as much of it as possible through selling/trade

i still have a ton of it left, but between wanting to build a nice desktop, getting a cheap tablet, and games i can see the well running dry this year

i also don't tend to hang onto many games and either sell them on ebay (even with their hefty fees you still come out ahead of gamestop), or trade when there's some sort of "bonus" credit percentage - i only own about 25 (boxed) games split between the various systems and pc

i'm not poor, but i'm not swimming in dough, so i try to keep the hobby as guilt-free as i possibly can

With Gamefly, unless I'm downloading XBLA stuff, I don't see a need to buy another game again.  If I get an itch to play a game again, I can just rent it again.

Once I build my octo core PC, I might get Steam for the insane deals they offer.  As I'm getting older, I'm finding less and less room for justification for spending a lot of money on video games.

I sold off all of my 360 games to get another 360 (an Arcade unit).  I want to just Gamefly shit from here on out.

how did you sell them? lord knows if it was via gamestop youd only have enough to buy some earbuds and a snicker bar at the best buy checkout

It was a Gamestop and I sold 7 games and got $45 in credit.  I haven't stepped into a Gamestop in years but that was about double what I was expecting.

I listened to a bit of this.  My resolution is pretty much the same as Eel's about buying less games, but if I do buy a game, not at full price.

About the 3DTV stuff, I'm interested in all that stuff only for gaming reasons.  I tried out the Nvidia PC solution at a friends house a while ago and recently tried Wipeout HD in 3D.  For movies I don't really care about it, but for games I think it can add a lot.  The simplest use was in Wipeout HD where hud is closest thing to you.  Everything else is 3D too from vehicles to the track but having the hud in the front makes it look like you have the benefits of a no-hud game without all the nonsense screen flashes and shit like that.  The Nvidia stuff was great too.  The glasses are pretty awful and uncomfortable, though.  Only problem I had with Avatar 3D was the dimming but the 3DTV tech is just using shutter tech, and that slight flicker gets unbearable after a bit.  Add that to the glasses not sitting on your face properly and it's something you don't want to be wearing for long stretches.

My interest is mostly for where the tech is going.  They've already shown off the 3DTVs that don't require glasses, though, you only have a small range where it appears 3D.  I'm hoping for these glasses 3Dtvs catch on enough that there is a lot of content for when there is a proper home solution that doesn't require glasses.  If there is enough interest, you will have Sony and Panasonic and others then competing to make a TV that doesn't require glasses and all that.

and realistically, like the motion controls, 3D on the PS3 and 360 is probably just a test for whatever happens next gen.  Wipeout both ran and looked noticeably worse in 3D because they had to had to draw two images.  There is talk of Killzone 2 in 3D, and that game didn't even run at a smooth 30.  Wipeout normally runs at 1080p 60fps, sometimes changing resolution in real time to keep the 60 fps.  Or you can look at the benchmarks for the Nvidia stuff and see how much of a dip in performance there is when using 3D.

Is the trin still in Japan?  If so, he should participate.

One thing that i thought made past podcasts, um, "work" was the 4 of us were in the same room. So probably go for that.
The issue is getting us together.

Hopefully Groo, Cormacaroni, myself and chinchilla (?) could sort something out.
