Title: Fundamental nutrition for the unemployed?
Post by: EmCeeGrammar on January 27, 2010, 10:58:04 PM: So,it happened. Whatever. I picked up a few applications and wrote some websites down, yadda yadda. Only problem is I have enough saved to pay my bills for one month, but not a whole lot to work with for food. So I just need a general idea of cheap foodstuffs to stock on and not get scurvy.

The latter. I figured ramen is a sure thing. What's a cheap protein source I can buy in bulk. Tuna?

And about the job- I'm glad, well besides thinking about finding a new job. It was a place with naggy management and tactless customers who could interpret any little thing as an assault on their person. The customer in question wrote a complaint and sure enough it was quoting things I never said. It was saying the food wasn't coming out quick enough and linking that to my service. But I don't control when food is ready, the understaffed kitchen that night did. SHRUG.

You can buy a fuck ton of rice for super cheap, put a little butter and some seasoned salt or whatever on it and eat the fuck out of it. Trust me, I've been dirt poor before. You can also buy super cheap spaghetti or whatever, then buy a can of diced tomatoes and tomato puree and make your own sauce for cheaper than what you would pay for it in the store. Tastes better with some seasonings, too.

Post by: Rman on January 27, 2010, 11:23:51 PM: Eggs, rice, beans, pasta, oatmeal get some spices and you'll be all set for three meals. I've been poor as heck, so I've been there. As Triumph said you can by rice in bulk for super cheap, same for oatmeal. Powdered milk is also cheap and provides good protein.

Ramen ain't bad if you dump the flavor packet.

A staple of mine in college was ramen noodles w/o flavor packet, a peanut butter sauce made with natural peanut butter, soy sauce and fish sauce, topped with a fried egg and garnished with sliced scallions.

buy some cans of different vegetables, chicken buillion cubes, and a whole chicken that's on special - make a huge pot of chicken soup and freeze it in containers - you can also throw a can of mixed vegetables into some ramen

marinara sauce, cheap shredded cheese, pack of sliced pepperoni, and a bag of pita bread - make yourself a whole bunch of cheap pizzas

tuna and salad fixings and a box of saltines

hot dogs are pretty cheap

Starches in general will, but yeah I was trying to exaggerate. My point is that potatoes can fill you up.

But true. Getting fired from a job as a waiter isn't anything to worry about. I used to work at an Olive Garden and people were always getting fired or not showing up. No big deal.

I'm not offended or anything, but I noticed we had an astronomical turnover rate too. Would you say that even if there isn't any indication that a location was hiring I should just assume they are?

i immediately set out after I got 'terminated' and looked all around my immediate area for who was hiring. About three places accepting applications, and maybe another 3 where I have to go online. Decent odds. I want to work at the movie theater but you have to print an application from their website. I'll be stopping by the library tomorrow to use their printer.

I steam it and eat it along with rice and whatever meat is a good value on the day I go shopping. It's been so long since I had to seriously shop for food in America that I can't remember. But a lot of the suggestions in this thread are bringing back memories of my college days.

Does someone actually look at these questionaires? Would it be best to paint myself as the rosiest employee possible for these, or be honest?

But they don't want to hear that you were late all the time at your old jobs. That's something that you shouldn't be honest about.
