I am at the point at which I don't care anymore.  The workload is ridiculous here, and I have so few resources to pull from...  My tickets start approaching a breach of SLA, so I have to work overtime.  I have a fair amount this week, actually, from where I stayed until 9PM one night, and was back after two hours of sleep at 5AM to work another 12 hour day (given, this was an emergency call).  So, they can either deal with the overtime, or I can take my skills to another company which would gladly hire someone with two years field experience..   :lol

Just my personal experience.

Fuck the man :rock Overtime FTW.

Worth it. I work on an offshore oil rig for 12 hours, 7 days straight: 8 hours regular and 4 hours overtime from 5:30 AM to 5:30 PM. With the amount of breaks we take, time goes by quickly. And when you look at your balance when payday arrives, you'll know damn well it was all worth it.

I've gone months in past jobs getting in the office around 9 and staying (dinner was catered, that wasn't good for the diet)  checking in code until the daily build got spun at 3AM. Unfun.

Also, zero overtime pay because US has white collar wage slave laws.  :maf

And it was worth it because I knew it would get me a promotion and a chance to move into an architect role, which I then promptly left because talking all day in meeting rooms is a terrible way to spend a life.

Overtime is always worth it.  I don't think any employer ever thinks "this guy can't get his stuff done in a regular workday" when overtime is needed.  It ONLY gets you brownie points.  No one spends time at work they don't have to!  Plus you get paid extra.  Fuck.

DO IT

beats the fuck out of salary. pulling a crushing week as salary and doing the math to see my adjusted hourly wage used to drive me to drink.

Back in the late 90's when I was slinging CRT tubes at a Toshiba plant for work, any overtime was taxed the living shit out of. Almost to the point of not be worth the time.

I took a pay cut just for some paid overtime.

Salary isn't worth it these days in the US because it gives the employers a license to drive you into the ground, which they like to take advantage of from time to time.

For about 5 years straight I worked 60-72 hours a week. Paychecks were nice, but I never had time to spend any of it. It was like I aged 5 years without growing at all (except for a nice pile of cash in the bank).

I don't regret it, but it made me realize that chasing money was a dead-end lifestyle.

Salary needs to be eliminated. The vast majority of jobs should be required to be paid hourly. If they don't like paying overtime, they can hire some extra workers to spread the workload around. :smug

I'm basically an overtime whore now.  In fact, I'm on overtime right now. I'll probably gross about 7-8k over the next six weeks just in OT.

You still working at the last place I saw you?  If so, I need to stop by your work sometime soon.  Stocks are getting low.

Be glad for OT though.  I work two jobs and I still can't get 40 hours a week in.  FUCK THE ECONOMY!  >:(

Well, after the EA Spouse spawned class-action lawsuit, I hear EA and some other companies are treating certain jobs as non-exempt. This means they're eligible for overtime, so those positions are able to go home after an 8 hour workday. However, in a sour grapes missive EA's HR emperor, Rusty something-something said it set a bad precedent, because "artists" would no longer be considered a creative endeavor. Buuuuullshit.

Anyway, here in the Greater Nipponese Empire, overtime is unpaid and as much a matter of course as, er, breathing oxygen or something. Seriously, even out of crunch most people work 11 hour days 5 days a week. We're currently in crunch on my team, 6 days a week, and most people are working 10:00 to 00:00, with some coders working until 02:00 commonly. Scary.

But the truth is overtime is just time you can't get back, Borys. If you don't want to do it, and you won't suffer in the eyes of management for refusing it, and if you don't need the money, don't do it. Do what you want. You can always make more money, but you don't get any chances to make more time.

Indeed. Not only does it sap your enjoyable lifespan, it also shortens your ACTUAL lifespan. The combination of overtime and shift work (working nights particularly) has a horrendous impact on your health. Douglas Coupland's 'Microserfs' has some good bits on this.

this is why I'm glad that I scored a plainclothes gig, as it's mostly day shifts. I do end up on night shifts occassionally, but not on a regular basis like if I was working general patrol.

That said, overtime usually means that I'm working an I teresting case, so that's why I tend to jump at the chance for overtime, in addition to the money.

Also, we can take overtime as lieu time instead of cash, so OT actually DOES "earn you time" for us.
