I think the one thing that I took issue with is that , for doug, he thinks mario kart wii is fun,  Yet he harps on it so much for its visuals.  I'm not going to argue its lacking in that regard.  I swear it looks worse than the cube version.  But a the few weeks I had with it made me think this was done intentionally.  The split screen performance in Double Dash was very spotty.  In Mario Kart wii, they had the correct priority for a kart racer which was keeping it 60 fps in all game modes with however many players.  I wish more developers on every system would make slightlier uglier games with better framerates /dark10x.

Kind of a moot point on  my part because I didn't particularly care for the game and traded it in.  But its the principle of the thing, man!

i have never denied my perceived status as a total and complete graphics whore. visuals are a key part in how much i enjoy video games, and if it isn't techically impressive, it MUST be artistically impressive (or at least coherent), of which mario kart wii is neither.

I haven't heard the Mario Kart segment yet, but on Double Dash vs MK Wii I think Double Dash looks better.  It's looks more vibrant, sharp, detailed, and the animation has more character (if that makes sense).  Mario Kart Wii looks so blah and dull.  There is simple and then there is clinical, and Mario Kart Wii is the latter.  Still a fun game, though, even if I didn't like it as much as other Mario Kart games.

i'm not "too fussed" about story/characters -- i could care less in virtually EVERY rpg i play, western or jappy. presentation is a different thing.

Okay, I played the dating sim thing last night.  Before I actually tell what I thought about it, there's something everyone must know.  If I think a game has a good storyline, no matter what, I will enjoy playing it.  And I like the "Choose your adventure" type of games as well.

That being said...   I really liked the game.

It was nothing like what I expected.  When I heard that some /b/tards were making a game, I had to check it out, no matter what.  Because with 4chan, they always do it for the lulz.  But this was not for the lulz.  This was for the serious.  Some actual thought went into these characters, and their relationships.  It kind of makes you put yourself into the shoes of the main character.  Here's some kid that was just a regular kid, and when the girl he likes asks him on a date, he has a fucking heart attack.  Then he finds out that he has some kind of heart disease that pretty much means he can't do anything that gets him too excited.  That's gotta suck in itself.  But then he finds out that he has to go to some kind of special school for people with disabilities.  And he's freaked out, because it's all new to him.  He meets these new disabled people (all of which are stupid cute for some reason, lol japan), and finds out that they're all normal inside, not the freaks he originally thought they would be.  There are actually very few choices to make in the game, maybe five tops, so it's more of a read-along anime than it is anything, but it's still an enjoyable way to kill an hour or two.  What I thought was somewhat funny was that it actually mentions escapism, much like the last Borecast.  Only the main character practices it through reading books (much better than fuckable virtual reality furries).  The first chapter ends after the main character has made some friends, and goes back to his dorm after his first week at this new school.  I'm actually kind of interested in where it goes from here.  As soon as it's finished, I'll probably be playing through the rest of it.

That's what I got from it too. This isn't 4-chan's typical "lololol animu" that most people expect it to be, somebody actually put a lot of thought into making this into more than just a joke. Rather than being a parody, which is what it seems to have started out at is, everything is taken seriously, even if it does have its share of humor, and it strives to build genuine emotions, in part by putting you inside the head of a "normal kid" who's suddenly stricken by heart disease.

I won't retread the areas tehjaybo already covered, since he covered them fairly well. Well, I might. Anyway, the main point of this game seems to be that people who have physical problems want to live normal lives and are often no different in their attitudes and desires than people who are perfectly healthy. The game does drift a bit from its point by having the female characters, even those with more obvious physical disabilities, still appear as cute. Their designs are basically standard dating sim designs with burn scars or stubby arms, which is a bit disappointing but not unexpected.

There are some quirky characters among the bunch, although they still fall within the standard parameters for a typical dating sim cast. However, it doesn't seem to go to the joke character well and, although some characters have only gotten short introductions so far, none of them come across as being seedy. Lack of seediness actually permeates this game as a whole, though I can't guarantee that holds true for the rest of the game.

Backgrounds are static photos covered in a few Photoshop filters, nothing amazing but they get the job done. The music actually seems a bit better than the annoyingly chirpy tunes that a lot of dating sim-type games seem to have. Character designs are standard anime, nothing exceptional or new here unfortunately.

On the whole, I expected much worse things from this game. It's reasonably well-written, has characters that aren't just digital representations of different player fetishes, and it actually TRIES to take its subject matter seriously.

Another thing that I didn't mention is that while the overall tone of the game is serious, like GR said, it has points of humor as well.  There were parts where I literally laughed out loud.  Overall enjoyable.

Listening today, curious as to what you guys think of Mass Effect 2 (since I don't get on the forums nearly enough now to have already figured this out)

I went into it in this episode and will be delivering some more spoiler free comments on the next one. It's a huge triumph-Bioware took all of the criticism of the first game to heart and took all of the right risks in all of the right places. The end result is a single-player shooter experience that's quite literally without compare-much like their other big "2" game (Baldur's Gate 2), it really rests on its own pedestal, defying nitpicky comparisons because nothing else really comes close to what Bioware's done with ME2.

I looked up a youtube of the dating game game in action and was surprised by the game's tone as well. It actually seemed pretty respectful and tasteful.

that being said , :rapetime + :uguu  = burn at the stake

I thought that was a given, actually. Why else have the interpreter be a sexy loli?

Also, the serious tone is part of Doing It For the Lulz - everyone expects a horrible game that's in terrible taste, so it's only by taking it seriously and being respectful that 4ch can continue to troll the Internet.

I just finished the first segment. Not to be Green Shinobi here, but I definitely thought that the segment focused WAY WAY WAY too much on Avatar. Here's why.

I can name at least three or four franchises that have appealed mainly to (and only in some cases) the escapist fanatics, and not one of them is Avatar. Lost, The Matrix, the last Indiana Jones movie, Star Wars. Regardless of what everyone else says, they still have fans and it's mainly because of escapism. Fuck, the Matrix is TEXTBOOK escapism. "I hate my job and my life, but wait, none of it is real anyways, but this real world full of machines and computers that can teach me anything in two minutes through a rod in my brain is."

That being said, I think Avatar took escapism too far. Again, not trying to say it should win an Academy Award or anything, but Avatar is a solid film in terms of not having overly horrible acting, even if the plot is predicable. It's on par action-wise with any other Cameron movie. My problem with Avatar IS the escapism in a way. When human characters decide that the best course of action is to totally eliminate their own species' presence on a planet in order to solve wrongdoings, that's taking escapism slightly too far. A fan of Avatar would be saying mainly that humanity (or real life) in any aspect isn't worth saving. A fan of Avatar would rather live in this dream world than converse with humans.

It's just another example of how film over-sensationalizes things. However, over-sensationalizing another reality over our own is dangerous. I am as addicted to film as anyone I know, but even I can step back and say that film should be treated as a good vacation rather than a permanent residence. I think Avatar took that aspect too far. The film wants you to buy into this reality on a permanent basis.

It's not even the best reality to buy into. I can think of several sci-fi or fantasy television series or films yet again that have much better world building and lore, even after only two and a half hours.

Segment One - I think "escapism" as you guys define it will only get worse over time.  It's kind of hard to remember the time when the major networks didn't jam pack reality shows on TV.  When they were on, I kind of thought that they would be huge and then kind of burn out by 2005.  I guess they won't be and will be a regular staple of TV (not that I watch it).  I don't think Avatar was a sign of anything to come though.  Successful movies have always been about immersing the audience into its world, making the audience feel they are apart of the movies themselves.  Thanks to the internet, we're seeing people express opinions about stuff where they never had a voice before.  A lot of those opinions are unbalanced -- the people that were getting depressed that they can't live on Pandora (is that what it is called?  I have not watched the movie yet) probably were always around.

Segment Two:

Mario Kart Wii - I thought this game was fun.  The graphics were unambitious but at the same time, it was the first console entry that wasn't half assed since the SNES version.  The N64 version was glitchy and empty.  I loved jumping into those grayscale abysses but the fact that you can jump into them so easily was a bad thing.  The GC version was just bad.  I still think the DS version is my favorite but the Wii version was the first competent console Mario Kart in 15 years.  That should count for something.

Phantom Brave Wii - I liked the PS2 version.  When I re-Wii, I might have to pick this up if its $10 or less.

Magna Carta 2 - Yes!

====================

Good episode.  Very good in fact.

Great episode. As someone else mentioned, there have been other movies (the matrix, etc.) that have catered to the escapist crowd, but I think the fan reaction to this movie has been more pronounced and more mainstream than ever before, which was addressed during the podcast.

Frag, if you are really brave eager to tackle Tom Chick's claim about console strategy games, I have End War and Halo Wars on 360 that I would be willing to send you.

Frag, since you are the strategy guru at The Bore: what is your opinion on DotA/HoN?  It is the only RTS that has ever "clicked" with me, and it is primarily because there is not nearly as much micro as with other games in the genre.  I only have to worry about my hero, item management and map positioning.  The community is quite possibly the worst in online gaming, but the game itself is really awesome.

I listened to the Mario Kart segment and I think Prole pretty much summed up how I felt about the game by calling it unambitious.  I understand Eel's point if this is one of the first mario karts he has played, but as someone who has played other Mario Kart games, Mario Kart Wii is really two things:  A Mario Kart game on the Wii, so Nintendo could check that off their list, and a reaction to Mario Kart DS.  Mario Kart DS is the "best of" Mario Kart game, bringing in old tracks and adding in new ones, keeping the gameplay from past games while refining it but feeling the same.  The problem is that since Mario Kart DS has online play, it showed off how people can exploit the power slide and snake, making every online game just people snaking around.  I'm thinking that the snaking problems of MKDS and the wii wheel caused them to change the entire power slide mechanic from previous Mario Kart games.  Basically, if you ignored the exploiters in Mario Kart DS, it would be the best version of the game.  Mario Kart Wii was taking Mario Kart DS and neutering it to fit on the Wii.  It's not a bad game or anything but for someone who played the past Mario Kart games, I just felt a bit ripped off.  That said, I'm also not the type to buy every iteration of a sports game or w/e.

As a whole the episode doesn't seem that old man-ish, but......when Frag says "The world is full of birds far more interesting than anything in Avatar" it really sounds like a parent's desperate and ill-guided attempt to wean his child off of whatever garbage said child has been watching.

"Why do you keep reading them Spider Man comic books?  Here's a book about real spiders -- they have even more super powers than Peter Parker!"

"You like ninja turtles?  Surprise - I bought you a real turtle!  Go feed him some lettuce -- it'll be totally gnarly, little dude!"
