I started an earthbound game back in 1998 and I enjoyed what i played. Whats the main appeal of the game? How is it different from other RPGs?

Personally I like the music, the trippy background effects, and how in the battle the HP meter rolled slowly down, giving a sense of urgency while attacking.

Also the game didn't force unnecessary battles, if your party's average level was higher then that of an enemy's, they died instantly upon contact.

Its different from most rpgs as its set in present day America and its some pretty zany shit. Just the dialogue alone makes this game amazing for me.

Contact on DS is pretty similar in terms of tone, and is well worth checking out if you like Earthbound. You should play it Viz.
