Finally, for real, the StarCraft II beta is about to begin. Activision Blizzard president Mike Morhaime announced today during a company earnings call that the close beta of the highly-anticipated real-time strategy game will launch this month.

The beta will be offered in North America, Europe, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand and, of course, the place where StarCraft II is just about a national pastime, South Korea. Morhaime said the beta would be accessible by thousands of players and used to gather feedback and generate excitement.

The game itself is expected to launch in mid-2010.

StarCraft II has been in development for several years. The original StarCraft was launched in 1998.

OMG OMG OMG

I threw my name into the hat EONS ago, so hopefully I get an invite like I did with WotLK.

How do you get in?

You need to have a Battle.net account. Dunno if it's also required that you have Blizzard products tied to the account or not

If you want in the Starcraft II beta, you MUST have a Battle.net account and have accepted the Beta Opt-In Agreement! Do this now!

Koreans probably wont take to it. They still play Warcraft 3 and all of the pay-to-play Korean titles. Games like MW2 barely make a dent here. It took years for Starcraft to catch on. They like what they like, it's like trying to get your Mom to listen to punk

Ehh. The competitive scene is such a driving force for the game's popularity over there that I don't see why it won't blow up big assuming there are no game-breaking balance issues or anything else that would hinder tournament play

You'll actually see the 'foreigner' (read: non-Korean) SC2 scene take off faster than the Korean one. I think the SC2 scene overall will probably look more like the Warcraft 3 scene does-bigger worldwide and less localized, with more equal skill worldwide than in Starcraft, where a b-team progamer that never gets to play on TV is still better than pretty much anyone else outside of Korea.

The original Starcraft will stay popular in Korea for many years to come, though.

Whatever the case, I hope the game itself is better than WC3 in every way possible :-X

You must have at least one full version of a Blizzard Entertainment game attached to this Battle.net account in order to set up your beta profile.

yeah, I really can't see Koreans not taking to it.

If you lived here for like 3 weeks you'd get it. You can't even imagine the vast amount of proprietary, Korean developed games that you've never, ever heard of that are 100 times as popular as Modern Warfare 2. Most of them you NEED a Korean ID (Like a Social Security #) to sign up. So foreigners can't even play!

It's crazy. These are an idiosyncratic people. It will take a long-ish time for Starcraft 2 to catch on. It took a long time for Starcraft 1 to catch on. Maybe a few years down the road when the game is more established you'll see it take off here, but. They like what they like and they're not in a hurry to change.

I don't see how the Korean local games have anything to do with SC2 becoming popular.  It may have taken a few years for SC to become popular, but now it's big as hell and people will be anticipating the sequel.

It's not like people still play Tekken 5 there, as soon as T6 hit Korea it completely overwhelmed the scene and everyone moved to it no problem, just as they did with the previous releases (sans 4).

You don't think the fact that SC is popular would speed up the adoption of SC2?

I remember hearing that some professional SC players in Korea and the US complained about the feel of the game with respect to professional play (macros for instance), but that was awhile ago; I'd imagine Blizzard has tuned things a lot since then.

you're probably referring to 'macro' which is shorthand for 'macro management', the economic side to an RTS game.

The big fusses I've seen mostly have revolved around the potential change in character of the races (each race in SC has its own strengths and weaknesses, and their own play style) and the macro management mechanic each race has, which essentially adds a component of "you need to pay attention and use these abilities frequently for an optimal economy', which has always seemed a sort of wobbly thing. Right now Zerg has the queen which can instantly spawn 3 larvae every so often at a hatchery (more units!), Protoss has a time accelerator thingy that increases building or research speed (ya so they can get DTs out faster :( ) and Terran probably has this MULE thing which will be a pain in the butt to use, clunky, but really powerful because that's the Terran Way.

My APM will never get back to its glory days but I am cruising around 150 APM/ 120 EAPM right now in SCBW and that should be enough for C style play. I might even get better over time and a little bit faster (and I'd be in much better shape if I played Protoss instead of Terran, which requires higher APM).

I open up the panel where you change the W7 desktop resolution and then start SC. It eventually loads up without the tealplosion.

The email process has started and with the number of emails that are going out, it will take a while for all of them to be sent. Please be patient.

One Battle.net account per copy of SC2.
So the first base game, with the Terran campaign, would come with an account but now the question is if you would also get one with the protoss and zerg expansions.  I'd guess that you would if you're able to play the expansions by themselves.

They're all tied to your Blizzard account, and the multiplayer portion is the same across all three games. So I guess that yes, you could setup a second account using the zerg or protoss expansion, but you'd also have to create a second Blizzard account then abandon all your stats and achievements from the first account, and you'd have to switch between accounts to play the different single player content.

9-0 in 1v1 as terran today (would have played more but got 5 TvTs and I play macro games, each one was like 30m each because the opponent didn't know just how badly he was losing).

Protoss is as gay as ever, tried a proxy pylon (countered), mothership rush (countered easily with valks), and two hidden expos on a 4 player map.

Zerg just rolled over to my +1 weapons/marine shield 3 rax pump.

Also LOLZ at the war3 players who don't expand.

I had been doing custom games trying stuff out last couple of nights with someone from a TL livestream ( I didn't get the beta going until Tuesday). Only started doing automatch late last night.

How do I download that?

When I first got the game I'd try going hydras super fast, but kept getting owned either early, or towards the middle of the game when I still didn't have many units; that strategy burns resources too fast for beginning of game. Now I go with zerglings fast, and rush if I find protoss; rushing terran rarely works unless they're just dumb (like not fortifying ramp). Massing roaches and quickly getting their damage upgraded works better, then once I expand I go with hydras.

Still weak on air defenses though. It's like I get into a passive stasis and my unit output suffers; I need to get off my ass and mass mass mass.

Just a note-another wave of account activations went out this evening. Check your bnet accounts if you are looking to get in!

I'm doing meh-OK on the ladders, mainly because I'm trying hard to do fast expand builds and the maps really aren't that great for them (but it's clear that's the way that the game is best played, if the maps were more conductive to that FE play would rule the roost).

New patch up buffs Terran upgrades, the changes would actually help out mech quite a bit if it wasn't already a complete gas hog.

Think someone else asked this in another thread but I never saw it answered: How does it measure up to the original? The buzz on TL seems pretty positive so far, but input from some neutral parties would be nice.

Still haven't got a beta invite and I kinda get the feeling that I'm probably not going to, so I guess I'm stuck with VODs and forum reports

SC was one of the few games that utterly dominated my time growing up. I was never amazing at it, but I had a blast doing LAN parties with friends in the neighborhood and trying to play online with my 56k AOL connection. Eventually I moved to other games, and while I always loved SC's gameplay other aspects turned me off. Mainly Battlenet and some annoying cheating.

This beta is a good enough glimpse for me to say the game measures up pretty damn well to the original. Battle Net is fucking awesome, I'm loving the new units and strategies etc. I'd imagine some of my complaints will be solved in the retail version. Mainly with the maps, which are kinda meh. Hopefully they add a couple more in a patch or something.

Not too worried about this when it goes live. A lot of the best maps for SC were user-made, and their map tools look amazing this time around

only danger with account sharing is that the game ties to a battle.net account, which can cause serious problems if your friend is a dumbass with computer and gets a keylogger or something (and you lose your WoW account).

It'll work fine though on any computer, people on TL sharing accounts openly.

I definitely need to work on my ZvT strategy. M&M waves can really fuck me over. Speedlings+roaches work well against them early, but I'm far from confident going into most matches against terran.

Contrast that to going up against toss. I can't help but laugh when I get zealot rushed, even if it's a double team rush in 2v2. Micro'd roaches destroy them in the early game. And hydras+mutas dominate their air units.
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: Fragamemnon on March 10, 2010, 02:51:36 PM
Mix in banelings and hydras against Terran. Roaches just aren't that good if they bring Marauders along, and Roaches get progressively worse as the game progresses.

If the game goes late, get Broodlords of course.
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: Phoenix Dark on March 10, 2010, 03:17:52 PM
I definitely need to use banelings more, not only in battle but burrowed in/around my base as well. I'm watching the ZvP replay recently posted on GAF, and just a few banelings totally destroyed a zealot front line.

I've been pretty successful in 2v2s with heavy roach rushes; if the first or second waves doesn't work, hydras finish the job. I haven't done many 1v1s

I'm FINALLY in on my own account. I have to play on the lowest settings until I go to Wal-Mart and get a new DVI cord so I can stop running stuff off of my shitty onboard Nvidia 6150, but I wanted to play SOO bad that I did a 2v2 just to check it out.

-Everything looks awesome even on shit settings. Can't say the same about my FPS lol
-The music makes me CUM, even if some of the orchestral bits do sound like Star Wars
-Love the idea of the new matchmaking system
-Skullfucked the opposition with my PROtoss PROwess despite not having played original SC for some time now. :bow Me :bow2

Honestly, I'm kinda intimidated by the scope of everything. Just a year ago I was so pumped to dive into competitive play headfirst like I used to with SC, but now I dunno. I've been burnt out on hardcore multiplayer stuff for a while now, and with RTSes my skills tend to rapidly deteriorate if I take a break for even a week or two. But for now I'm having plenty of fun, so whatever

Are you guys still playing? If so, are your names the same as on here? I'll be on more often now that I can run the game with the best settings. I prefer 1v1 to 2v2, but I'm up for whatever.

Couple random thoughts after playing a bit more:

-I dunno why, but I'm finding Protoss incredibly boring. Gonna have to play more T and Z to see what I like. Seems as though T is (thankfully) less reliant on clunky mech and tedious hard-pushes than SC1, and Z looks fun as ever

-The unit pathing and AI is SOOO much better, but I guess that also means there's less emphasis on heavy micro. I can see why a lot of people are saying it feels dumbed down, but I'm a scrub anyway so I can't complain. Still, I think it's likely that with time micro will evolve to BW levels as more players dissect the game and new tricks are discovered

-Bring back the advantage of high ground! The game is already macro-heavy enough as it is

People must be so bad at this game. I (being mediocre at best) and my friend (who never really played SC 1 multiplayer) made it up to platinum in 2v2. Poor macro, no chemistry, and no real strategy other than "pump out MMM and throw it at them until they die" and yet we won every single placement match. Well, we lost a pair the other night but it was 4:30am and we were really drunk so I'm not counting those.

As of now TvZ feels a bit imbalanced 1v1. If they just mass roaches I either have to throw up turrets (or sensor towers, which need a reduction in price) all over the damn place or sacrifice MULEs for scanner sweeps; either way my economy is gonna fall behind. I've yet to beat a Z that is good at roach harass. Other times they just go baneling/crackling which I can counter with early pressure if I scout it, but once it gets to mid-game I'm getting absolutely wrecked using MMM. I try to stim and run away with rines and position the marauders to take hits when I see em coming, but half the time I get auto-surrounded and buttraped. Maybe I should try throwing some hellions into the mix as well? But then if they start pumping out mutalisks for harass I'm typically too low on gas to get enough anti-air. The only other thing I can think of is playing it like TvP in SC1; hard pushes across the map with tanks, hellions, and some marines to soak up the damage. I dunno, this one has me stumped. Maybe I'm just crying cuz I'm bad and being outplayed :'(

Frag, you play Terran, right? Any thoughts on this match-up? I suppose I should take a look at the TL forums as well

Frag, you play Terran, right? Any thoughts on this match-up? I suppose I should take a look at the TL forums as well

I FE in TvZ on most maps-one rax into CC (bunkers if you scout a faster pool/roach warren/one base baneling bust), putting down a second rax before getting gas on both geysers. The idea is that Zerg economy is so strong with queen puking that if you dawdle taking that first expansion  (or harass and fail to do damage), you're going to be screwed. You can actually get a decent number of marines out while fast expanding off of one or two barracks due to the efficiency of mining vs. gas+mules, as well. Once you get gas going you can get a third rax and then go 2 tech lab/1 reactor while still having enough minerals to power SCVs and enough gas on both bases and leftover minerals to aggressively tech and upgrade off two ebays.

This gives you a lot of options from here-you can go with a drop into his main (works great on maps like Scrap Station) or a midgame 1/1 or 2/2 push if he tries to take a third base. If he stays on equal bases you can just tech two port Ravens w/ HSM and flatten his army instantly.

The key through it all is to never let Zerg get bigger than you. Their macro ability is really powerful and if you let them get too far ahead in drone count or especially bases, you'll have a hard time keeping up. Keep in mind that once you commit to a third base you will both need to defend it with a PF upgrade AND be up in Zerg's grill so much that they are too busy to deal with it.

Thanks! Gonna go try a few more. I do tend to FE on most map, so it sounds like my biggest problem is just maintaining map control with constant pressure. Bit rusty still, heh. And I actually forgot about HSM's entirely :duh

I do need to start watching more replays. I've been watching one guy's Livestream (Gretorp) every now and then, but I still haven't even bothered to check out any reps. Where are you getting the ones from the players you listed? I checked Team Liquid's replay sticky and didn't see any of em

Fought tooth and nail to remain in the gold league (2v2) today lol. I'm at 94 in my division. I'm pretty confident in my build now, although I need to get better preparing for rushes. I can pull off an 8 pool counter rush, but my economy winds up sucking after I survive the rush. I'll experiment in some custom games tomorrow.

My early gold games were utter disasters but now I'm either winning or losing competitively.
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: OptimoPeach on April 04, 2010, 06:18:25 PM
I've been sorta beasting lately. The day after the reset I played a bunch of games really stoned and tanked like 8 games in a row, but since then I've been clawing my way back up gold. At this rate I'll easily grind to platinum.

-TvP is really fucked up right now with that marauder cheese. I'm assuming they'll nerf marauders or reactor-fy the tech lab with the next patch. Maybe they can compensate by making mech worth a shit in this match-up

-Really loving opening with reapers -> FE against Z. If I don't have to scout them I'll go 9 rax-> 9 gas-> 11 depot and just rally my reapers for really fast harass; otherwise I just build standard and get the speed upgrade before going in with 2-3. I can also bunker if they go FE and really fuck them over. After I expand I usually transition into 2 port banshees or mass marauders/medic. For a while I was going with hellions for early harass, but it doesn't seem as viable if they open with early roaches from 1 base, which seems to be more popular as of late

-TvT is probably my weakest, if only because the match-up isn't nearly as linear and predictable as others. 2 port banshee doesn't appear to be as dominant as it seemed early on. Strategies and army composition are much more flexible than any other match-up imo.

-One thing that worries me is the game seems to become a serious macro & mass fest past 15min. Even in the pro matches I've seen, if the game doesn't end with some nice micro early they tend to turtle up and make it a war of attrition. It gets incredibly boring watching mass marauders vs mass roaches fighting in the middle over and over

Loving this game. It'll be my GOTY if they manage to work out some of the kinks and make a 2010 release

I expected as much though. I'm glad how smooth it runs on my 3+ year old computer.

Pretty gay that there is no voice chat though. It even kills your steam conversation when launching the starcraft game. It even kills it when you alt tab back to the game.  :maf

Painful losses are going to happen, and they can really be frustrating in RTS. Especially after you think you've turned a corner, then BAM you start getting crazy matches that fuck you up.

Yesterday I got manhandled in a 2v2, two zerg against two terran. The terran countered our every move and we were pretty slow to react. I eliminated their marine/marauder force with banelings, so they were full mecha on our asses; hellions, tanks, etc. It was like a long defeat. We won some battles but ultimately they contained us pretty well.

I need to start going air more. Usually I use a mixture of ground forces depending on the situation, and by the end of most games I haven't built a spire.

The only time I've lost to Zerg lately is when they pull a nice muta transition that I don't scout fast enough. Most people seem to have awful control with their infestors though, so maybe that's why

Does anyone know how placement works? I finished my 1v1 with a 1-4 record  :-\, so I am hoping that it pitted me against some higher ranked or experienced players.

I can pretty much dominate toss as long as the game doesn't go too long, but I've always struggled against terran. I love seeing Thors though, they're so easy to control with infestors (btw I hate having to invest in natural parasite now...boooo patch qq). Banelings take out their light units easily, but when terran go straight mech I get fucked.

Someone on another forum was asking for videos of gameplay from members in the beta, so I figured I'd post this here as well as an opportunity to flex my e-peen. Fucking sound got desynced by YouTube.

I believe this was the win that got me plat, so it's a fairly old game. I dunno if I've gotten any better since then, though. Anyway, lots of mistakes. Lost the first marauder like a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow, should have killed his supply depot with my second marauder before hopping in the bunker, bad control with my first banshee when I tried to push back up his ramp (attacking rax while all my shit dies lol), lost my third banshee to a rally point that I didn't reset, and I lost a shitload of banshees at the end to his sniping.

Yeah I'll pop out a thor for AA if I see mutas, but as soon as I see an infestation pit I cut production. I've lost games to neural parasited thors lol

Yeah it's incredibly stupid. When they said they were removing identifiers I was all like THANK GOD NAMES ARE GONNA BE UNIQUE and then it turned out that they just came up with an even more distinguished mentally-challenged system. But hey, at least we have Facebook integration ::)

Battle.net is all kinds of fucked up right now. Games are regularly freezing for all players, wins are being recorded as disconnects, etc. I know it's beta and all, but nerdraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaage

Don't want my email popping up on Google lol

My nerdrage is starting to boil over. Game is unplayable right now, and B.net 2.0 is kinda disappointing now that we're getting close to release. I'd elaborate, but Jinro sums it up much better than I can. (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewpost.php?post_id=5319397) Oh, and here's why the whole map publishing system sucks (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=126744)
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: Phoenix Dark on May 23, 2010, 01:46:34 AM
It's my spam/craigslist email lol

B Net works on a basic level, and I like the design. But most of the gripes in that thread are valid, and I've complained about them before with my brothers. I can't help but think stuff like pw protected games will be in the final product though, so I won't bitch too much.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the tournament setup, or lack thereof. The ladder system doesn't really feel like the competitive league I imagined it to be. While it's certainly fun laughing at my brothers as they play/ruin our rank, that's about the only entertaining thing about it. I want actual tournaments, and it's annoying being ahead by tons of points but still not being moved to the next ladder.

Facebook compatibility but no chat channels? SMH. Also, I really don't like my name being broadcast for all to see. I guess I'm in the minority, but I liked the username/id format.

Pretty much. Me and a couple real life friends were trying out 3v3 and gave up after the second or third crash in a row. I tend to bitch and moan a lot about Blizzard's tech support, but they are usually pretty good about fixing serious issues within a day, so something must be seriously wrong lol.

If you're itching for some SC2, go watch this incredible ZvT from the Europe vs Asia tournament earlier (http://blip.tv/file/3661355). TLO really topped himself in this one. I've never seen someone play the match-up like this

He has an almost nauseating amount of fanboys, but for good reason. His unorthodox play draws a lot of comparisons to Boxer, and the fact that he can pull this stuff off against top players with THREE races instead of one is fucking bonkers. Actually, his Protoss is pretty boring, but I don't think anyone can make SC2 Protoss exciting. Anyway, I think he's my favorite player to watch at the moment

Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: OptimoPeach on May 30, 2010, 03:19:55 AM
What ways especially?
Two really big things that have been nagging at me lately:

-Less emphasis on potentially game-changing spells. Psi storm, stasis, irradiate, plague, dark swarm, defense matrix, lockdown, and disruption web vs. a nerfed psi storm, point defense drone, fungal growth (which is actually awesome, to be fair), neural parasite, force field (good, encourages exploitation of positioning), and then bland stat buffs like frenzy and guardian shield. Also note that the only SC:BW spell on that list that deals flat damage with no other effect is psi storm, whereas in SC2 Terran only really have one spell that ISN'T in point defense drone. I would argue that the only two spells that can change the momentum of the game with only a few casts are fungal growth and force field.

-Less emphasis on skill-intensive micro. This is the one I really used to disagree with, but when you get into the late game it's sorta true. No more incredible shuttle/reaver micro that can decide the game because the reaver was removed in favor of the colossus, a unit that can only be microed to the extent that you can abuse cliffs. No more dodging lurker spines. No more tight mutalisk micro taking out an entire base of SCVs or picking off half a marine army because they removed unit stacking and moving shots. No more 1-2 vultures stomping multiple control groups of lings because they removed moving shots (tell me how your hellion micro goes past 10 min when the Zerg has ling speed and enough lings to surround). Oh yeah, no more moving shots.

People that whine about unit compositions in certain match-ups are missing the point, because if beta has proved anything it is that strategies are influenced by trends just as much as they are by the mechanics of the game, but I feel like these complaints are legitimate. Not only does it make the game more boring to play, it makes it more boring to watch.

That said, SC2's multiplayer is still (imo) second to no other RTS than BW, so it's not like it's a shitty game or anything
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month

I just had an epic game vs toss where I think the guy might have been able to keep on going, but maybe he just gave up. He expanded ALL OVER the map and had a pretty insane force of zealots and stalkers that he tried attacking me with, but i had a nice-sized group of marauders and tanks up on a cliff above the fight. Even though he outnumbered me possibly 3 to 1, I annihilated his forces. And then from there I was harassing and blowing up shit with banshees and he made a few void rays that I killed with some vikings. I just wore him down, even though he was winning the resource battle 3 to 2. Maybe he was just trying to fuck around, I dunno. But it was epic.
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: OptimoPeach on May 30, 2010, 03:52:20 AM
Heh those games where everything just clicks are what keep me coming back. And yeah, he probably just gave in to mental fatigue. Nothing to make you want to quit like losing your entire army, having to deal with harass, and trying to maintain map control.

And grats on not losing to void rays. I cringe when I think about how many games I lost to void rays when I first started playing

booo @ my diamond league record wiped clean by the reset

Is there anything worse than playing a perfect game, but losing in 12 minutes because your two allies have no fucking units. I love 3v3s but these placement matches have been brutal. One win, one outright loss (we just got crushed), then two games where my allies did nothing but build photon cannons and ask for minerals.

Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: Phoenix Dark on June 05, 2010, 01:56:56 AM
I don't do much 1v1. I played a lot of 2v2s before the 3v3/4v4 patch. It was challenging always having to be ready for a huge push, and knowing your ally might not make it to your base in time. The 3v3 map is more forgiving as it's like Twilight Fortress (a map I hated btw) just with two choke points.

When you get good or even decent allies, 3v3s can be epic as fuck. 4v4s are a bit too hectic for me so far
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: OptimoPeach on June 05, 2010, 06:34:29 AM
Yeah I'm all about the e-peen, and since 1v1 is a lot more personal and the margin for error is so little compared to team stuff, I find the victories to be much more satisfying. If I lose a game I want to lose because I was outplayed, not because my partner is dead weight or we got the shit end of the stick on the team composition dice roll. But I don't take 2v2 that seriously anyway. Losses in 2v2 are just whatever, but 1v1 is srs business for me.

Everyone go ahead and add me again with the email I posted above, but I dunno if I'll be on much before they take down the beta. Kinda burnt out at the moment.

Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: OptimoPeach on July 11, 2010, 07:42:51 PM
I've had a couple truly epic ladder games myself. One was a 45 min TvP on Scrap Station which started with him scouting my proxy 10 rax reaper, so after my first reaper I popped out 2 marauders with conc shell while making a beeline to banshees with cloak. My weak marauder crap failed, so I floated my rax back to my base and built 2 more to start pumping units for the inevitable counterattack. He sniped my CC that I had just floated down to my natural, but I just BARELY managed to hold him off at my main's ramp with some rax units, 3 banshees, and all of my SCVs. After that I harassed the shit out of him with banshees and got about a thousand probe kills to even things up. This gave me time to secure my natural and a third, and I eventually won the macro battle (in a big way; I had around 7k minerals and was making BCs by the time the game ended :lol) by keeping him on 2 bases. Cloaked banshees are SOOOOO strong on Scrap Station.

The other game was a TvT on Lost Temple that actually followed a similar trajectory of failed cheese -> cloaked banshees -> win via harassment and superior economy. It wasn't nearly as spectacular, but there was one pretty funny bit: As soon as he scouted that I had 2 port banshee coming, he threw down an armory and got a thor. I had an expansion up and he didn't, so I knew that if I continued to poke at him with a couple banshees every now and then, he'd get way too many thors and not be able to afford much else, while I could mop him up with marauders and tanks. And that's exactly what happened! I get really excited when I'm able to gameplan like that on the fly and it works out seamlessly.

Apparently the key to having really epic games is to (poorly) cheese a lot and then make a bunch of dangerous transitions. It reminds me of last patch when I played TvP on Steppes of War where my opponent went cannon rush -> DT -> void ray. Any good player should be able to own someone doing so many tech switches in the early game, but I was so caught off guard by all his funky deviations that the win was twice as difficult as it should have been.

Oh, and that TvT win got me up to diamond. I'M BACK

Ok, I've been having this weird thing where the game spazzes out and then the screen turns black. I quickly ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the Win7 menu or whatever, and then hit ESC to go back to the game. It wasn't all THAT annoying when it was happening every once every two or three games, but the last game I played it happened a half-dozen times.

Well, at least I destroyed the guy.

I saw a thread on the bug forum about that the other day when I went there to whine about the removal of being able to through Terran buildings. A couple people said updating their graphics card drivers helped.

I swear, the game has more intensive requirements since it came back. My fan chugs like it never used to before while I'm playing, and I actually had to kick a few settings down to medium
Title: Re: Starcraft II closed beta launches this month
Post by: Phoenix Dark on July 13, 2010, 12:10:19 AM
Optimo played my brothers and holy shit, both games were epic  :lol

First one: my brother (zerg) went roach and hydra and did pretty well, but Optimo's tanks kept blocking any progress. So he nydus'd right fucking next to a barracks in Optimo's base and it actually worked lmao. Destroyed everything except the command center, but Optimo quickly countered, destroying my bro's base. My brother almost killed the command center as it flew over a cliff, then Optimo caught him in a bad choke and annihilated his forces, winning the game.

Second game, my other brother (toss) did very well. Got thrown off by Optimo building a bunker in his base early, but after that he went with Immortals and really did some damage. Optimo countered with Banshees and Marauders, but my brother went void ray and won  :o

Both games went far better than my games with Optimo :fbm

H TO THE USKY HUSKY bugs the hell out of me. HD reminds me of Gus Johnson, but he's at least bearable I guess. Day[9] is definitely the better player, and I think he does an incredible job of highlighting all the nuances that all the other casters tend to miss, partially because he's able to glean so much more from playing all three races instead of just one. He's also toned down the goofy nerd shit somewhat when he casts tournaments. I always pick him if I have an option. He's actually doing a tournament right now: http://www.ustream.tv/day9tv TLO vs Tester is coming up and they're a couple of the best players to emerge from the beta, so check it out if you're not doing anything else.

edit: I do appreciate all the games Husky and HD cast though, even if I'm not a big fan of either. They're at least much better than some of the terribles that used to do English commentary for Brood War

Tester is frighteningly good. He destroyed everyone at the last big TeamLiquid tournament, and he's only lost one game in this entire tournament so far. He's probably the best Protoss there is at the moment. He's also Korean ::)

That game is exactly why I rarely do 1 rax -> FE in TvP, though; too vulnerable to early pressure for my liking. I'm also surprised he did it on Blistering Sands. Normally you can do a 2 rax + ghost -> FE and be fairly safe with a few bunkers at your natural, but it's hard to defend your expansion on that map with the back door.

Yeah it's not as big of a deal for Zerg to defend because you go like 10000 mph on creep. I actually filter Blistering Sands out on ladder :shh It has the longest rush distance out of any map, and I end up with some really nightmarish games when I do anything mech heavy due to the immobility
