Mario Galaxy 2!

Metroid Final Fight

I dunno, 2010 doesn't seem like a year to sell off your wii.

Yeah, Dolphin is a good work around if there aren't emulation problems.  I know a guy who played through all of Tales of Graces on Dolphin no problem.

With a new Zelda set to be unveiled at E3 and games such as SMG2, Metroid: Other M, Sin and Punishment 2, etc set to release this year, it's quite obvious that all serious gamers need a Wii in 2010.

Metroid Prime is the best zelda ever.  There's item acquasition and dungeons (phendrana drift is my favorite zelda dungeon ever), and cool bosses, and the story is optional. Seriously, more people need to realise their very much the same damn genre.

Eiji aunoma has been doing all the zelda games (sans minish cap) since after majora's mask.  So think of all the problems wind waker, spirit tracks, and twilight princess had, and then think about a new zelda from the same guy.

Well, a lot of it has been Miyamoto's influence.

Miyamoto continues to do what he feels is the series' best direction.

Aonuma is more along the lines of introducing more story to Zelda and have and having deep gameplay. Miyamoto is more along the lines of making it as casual as possible for newcomers.

Miyamoto has gained thus said reputation, I'm guessing because he chose to do things like wii fit, wii music, nintendogs, etc.  But if you ever read the post mortems on the last few mario games you'll see Miyamoto come along and do things like engineering the super guide so that nsmbw could have some challenge.  Or when he consulted on mario galaxy and had the lifebar shortened to three hits and removed the ability to suck coins in with the spin move.  So I disagree that , if Miyamoto did have an intrusion on the zelda franchise, it wasn't anywhere near as disruptive as what the zelda team decides on their own.

I said I was going to re-Wii but I think I'll just get Dolphin and buy the games used from non-Gamestop sources.  That way Nintendo gets none of my money.

The Miyamoto cult of personality always amuses me.  Every bad Nintendo game with his name slapped on it, it turns out he barely had any influence on the game.  Every good Nintendo game with his name slapped on it, he has some deep involvement with.  Miyamoto dinks around in his garden and this is an acceptable backstory as inspiration for Pikmin.  Miyamoto was waiting his whole life for a game like Wii Music.  Now Miyamoto is taking credit for a bunch of stuff on NSMB Wii.

Miyamoto is the Kim Jong-il of the gaming world, even down to the game starved peasants who think everything he does is gold.

Both DS Zelda games were horrible, but Twilight Princess definitely wasn't. Much better than Wind Waker, since it actually felt more 'complete'.

Willco: Twilight Princess also had some of the best dungeon design out of any 3D Zelda. Not to mention, it didn't suffer from low framerates (like the N64 Zeldas) or extremely boring, uneventful sailing.

How much can you enjoy 'exploration' when you know that every single tile has exactly one island, and most of the time it's the size of a pinhead and takes 5 minutes to get to?

There are 49 tiles. 3 or 4 are towns you have to go to. 7 or 8 are dungeons that you have to go to. That leaves 39 tiles.

6 of these are boring ass fairy fountains that take a bomb or a hammer switch to open. Whee. 6 more are those stupid "puzzles" that are just dice numbered 1 through 6. That leaves 27 tiles.3 of those are just little orb islands that unlock the Tower of the Gods. Whee, 24 tiles that you actually have to explore for, and barely any of them take more than 5 minutes to finish off.

The sailing stuff wasn't an issue for me as soon as you could teleport where you wanted to go to, but I can't imagine voluntarily exploring all the titles. Wind Waker's main fault is not enough dungeons, but the game was compelling and the art direction was ace.

Twilight Princess looked like garbage and it was boring to just play in general. It's a soulless "mature" Zelda game that references Ocarina of Time too a sickening degree to placate fanboys, of which the Zelda subset is the worst in all of geekdom.

nahhhhhh the dungeon of twilight princess are ace,the only things i really dislike about it are the wolf segments, they just seems to be there to pad the game by forcing you into stupid insect hunt or shit like that

yea the wolf sucks but you throw that aside in the first few hours, and the dungeons are ace. Don't care about the story in either game.

The first part of WW sucks too, where they don't let you change the wind and force you to go from place to place to place and do a stealth dungeon.

The dungeons in Twilight Princess didn't do anything for me either. I never even finished the game, which is when Prole said it became decent. I should not have to play any game for hours to finally enjoy it.

And I'm not big on story either, but when your game is nothing but a soulless retread that awkwardly forces Ocarina of Time references everywhere, it's fucking sickening.

Thankfully, the second half of TP tones down the story a lot (I was never big into the stories of Zelda either, though I enjoyed Link's Awakening), and is mostly hacking through dungeons, which I think is the bread-and-butter of the franchise. The beginning of the game is SLOOOW, but if I am playing through a 50 hour game, 5 hours of dullness isn't that big a deal.

Why the fuck would I play through hours until it finally gets good? If I don't enjoy a game, fuck it. I shouldn't have to concede anything to enjoy a game. It's either good or it's not. Fuck that noise.

Post by: AdmiralViscen on February 16, 2010, 10:53:37 AM
The beginning wasn't bad either. Who cares if it has lots of homages, if you aren't into the story then it is easy to ignore. The bug hunts sucked but the dungeons were good. The first one is a typically straighforward First Zelda Dungeon but I really enjoyed the Goron Mines.

It's not homages, it's sickening fanboy drivel. It's disgusting. The only thing more embarrassing to play would be a Final Fantasy game or Heavy Rain. The beginning is also not fun at all.

LOL you're so freaking angry lately, Willco.

Though tbh I can't really recall too many games lately that pulled me in right away, most have a fairly slow start (though admittedly not as slow as TP's). Even Uncharted 2, which was a short and mostly well-paced game, had the really slow intro level where you're climbing up the train, and the stealth section in the museum.

There is a difference between a game that starts slowly and games that are not fun. Twilight Princess is the latter. Plenty of games start slowly, most are not embarrassing to play.

Well, I'm just taking in to account what's been revealed on the Iwata Asks segments and whatnot.  He also had substantial input on the first metroid prime and the early pokemon games.  I'll concede that I have a selective memory when it comes to this kind of shit, but it works both ways.  A lot of people choose to see the negative stuff solely.

I think Twilight Princess gets way more hate than it deserves.

Don't get me wrong, for a Zelda game it's pretty terrible, and the shameless rip-off of Ocarina of Time gets pretty tiring, but the game is still solid. Some dungeons are more forgettable than others, but the mansion, the Temple of Time, and the sky dungeon were at the very least departures from the series norm.

I'm pretty sure that the quality of Zelda games nowadays has less to do about the actual game and way more to do with how much hype was generated pre-release, and how short of those expectations the game fell.

I'm far from a Zelda fan, but there really aren't any BAD Zelda games. Twilight Princess is kind of padded and boring in some areas, but it's far from a shitty game. I'd pick it over half the terrible shit on the Wii any day.

Seriously how can people like TWW? it was such a boring ass game, same goes with OoT.  Majora's Mask was the best 3d Zelda game by far.

:lol you have got to be joking, WW is only boring if you hate exploration.

OoT is the greatest videogame title ever created. Majoras Mask was good but nowhere near the masterpiece that was OoT.

Oh, sorry. Didn't realize that exploring new areas in a Zelda game was such a turnoff for some.

Eh, gotta be fair here. Miyamoto is actually pretty humble when it comes to this sort of thing. Sure, the higher ups might force him to do PR for a lot of games, but he actually goes out of his way to give most of the credit on certain games to the directors and designers (most notably Aonuma).

Also, Willco is weird. Didn't he like OoT? I can understand hating on TP if you never liked OoT, but if you did, why wouldn't you want more of it? That's not to say I think TP is better, but for all the complaints the game gets, the fact that it tried to emulate OoT should not have been one of them.

Again, no one seemed to complain that SMG was in many ways a homage to SM64. *shrug*

OoT hasn't aged well at all.  And twilight princess it justs looks like a OoT rehash.  I can't comment too much because I'll never play tp.

And SMG didn't ape sm64 as much as you imply.  The structure was changed up substantially.  Whereas sm64 was you finding objectives in a static level, galaxy remixed the level depending on the objective.

When was the last time you played Ocarina of Time? I beat the whole thing a few months ago and I can't find a single complaint. It's far from my favorite N64 game and not even my favorite Zelda game, but it's aged fine. Graphics and performance-wise, of course not, but the gameplay is excellent. I definitely had more fun playing it than most of the current games I've tried.

I get tired of this stuff, but okay, so TP and OoT both have:

-have Link, Zelda, Ganon
-have Epona
-Have 3 of the same beginning elemental dungeons
-introduce the master sword after the third dungeon
-uh...have a lot of dungeons, I guess?

I'm being extremely generous, btw. Now with SM64 and Galaxy, both:

-have Mario, Peach and Bowser
-require 60 stars to beat, but 120 to get 100%
-have you fight Bowser 3 times throughout the game
-require you to play the same world multiple times doing different objectives

I know you'll probably say something along the lines of "BUT IF YOU IGNORE ALL THAT STUFF, THEN IT TOTALLY SHAKES THINGS UP".

If you're gonna take the most cursory glances, then the comparisons with SM64 are just as valid. I don't get why TP gets so much shit for that, when you have stuff like the Oracle games that are far more worthy of being called out for being clones.

Hmmm, I think its been about 5 years.  The game is too large for its own good.  The tech couldn't handle an overworld with enemies.  Dungeon design is hampened by the 3rd dimension in many cases.  Because the efficient way to engage enemies is with z targeting. Often instead of solving puzzles so that enemies are in context to those puzzles, you are usually tasked with clearing a room first and then sliding a block into place.  Common camera issues with early 3d games detract on a frequent basis.  This makes many puzzles more obtuse than what I expect from a zelda game.

It's a landmark game to be sure.  When I first played it I was stunned at the world they had created in this game.  But no amount of nostalgia can excuse how excruciatingly slow and plodding it can be most of the time.  But then again, I liked phantom hourglass.

I imagine most people don't care about that stuff Oblivion.  I sure don't.  Its arbitrary similarities that don't relate to how the game plays.  Super Mario galaxy has so many more tricks up its sleeve than sm64 did, and it had amazing pacing.  Twilight Princess looked like it just checked off a list of what a zelda manbaby wants and then added a bunch of collectathon wolf segments.

I really encourage you to play it again, and on an N64 if possible. It's still great. I never had a problem with the camera (and I'm usually the first to complain about bad cameras). The dungeons are simplistic and occasionally slow, yes, but not to a fault.

Most dungeons have a brisk pace and can be run through at around an hour a piece. The Forest Temple gets slow near the beginning and middle, the Shadow Temple is easily the worst of the bunch, with the Spirit Temple bringing it back up before the finale.

Not only that, but one thing OoT nailed that TP missed is that the extra content is actually worth getting, and that the secret items have a kind of chain going where getting one allows you get another and so on, so forth.

I was going to do a "OoT replay thread" but during my replay I was taking a break from EB.

Uh...okay. So taking out those 'arbitrary similarities', how does TP play any more similar to OoT than it does to any other 3D Zelda?

None of this has to do with the the original argument, that following a previous game's template, whether or not you improve it is apparently irrelevant.
